Thoughts on Gamepad/Steam Controller play after mobility skill hotfix

First of all, thank you for this extremely fun game, and for letting me play it with a controller. M/KB really cramps up my wrists. I’ve gone from a fresh install all the way to Ultimate clear on a Steam Controller, and I haven’t felt like the experience was diminished by that at all.

And thank you for the new ‘move max distance’ toggle for mobility skills for gamepad players in v1.1.1.2 Hotfix 3. It makes a big difference, and has become my preferred mode to use.

However, having seen that you are actually paying attention to the pitfalls of playing with a gamepad (which is surprising, as few devs do), I have a suggestion for an additional improvement:

  • Activating Vire’s Might (or similar dashing mobility augments) a second time while mid-dash will stop the dash early, causing the ability to finish at that location.

I think this would be a nice QoL improvement for gamepad players, to prevent overshooting mobs, and to hit that sweet spot to maximize AoE.

But it could also be a boon for those who don’t use gamepad. For example, if a player decides to rush a boss, and sees the boss winding up for something nasty close-range during the approach, they could cancel the dash, and maybe even activate a mobility augment to retreat further. It would also be handy for reacting to traps summoned by bosses (Sentinel cough cough).

BBL, more monsters to crush.

In D3 on consoles it works as follows (i.e. Barbarian Leap):

  • if you tap a button, you leap to the targeted enemy
  • if you hold the button, you leap max distance
    which is another possible solution

Wow, I haven’t played Diablo III yet, and that sounds pretty great.

I imagine it makes the decision during the startup frames of the leap, with a tap being considered some milliseconds long, then anything beyond that triggers the non-targeted leap. So all the mobility skills would need a little bit of wind-up to cover the conditional. Sounds tricky to implement.

I wouldn’t have thought such a thing possible in GD, but I just noticed there is an XBO console port on the way, so… maybe it’s okay to dream big?
