Trial Version

I have two friends who’d like to try the game before buying it, so it’d be great if there was a trial version available.

As a side note, when thinking about trial versions, I came to the conclusion that it could really help with software piracy in general if more companies released trial versions of their games. Do you agree?

GoG and even Steam have firm refund policies in place they can take advantage of. If they were going to make a trial version they already would have so I would tell your friends not to hold their breath over it. I doubt Crate is going to just crank you out a trial version in a timely fashion for your friends.

Absolutely not, this is naive thinking. Doesn’t even consider the large amount of work that has to be put into making the trial/demo version, or that most games have issues that need to be patched on release.

Then let them have a go on your copy when they come over to visit you.

Alternatively as Powbam says both Steam and GOG have refund policies where you can buy the game, play it for a little while and if you don’t like it get your money back. Here’s Steam’s:

“Valve will, upon request via help.steampowered.com, issue a refund for any title that is requested within 14 days of purchase and has been played for less than 2 hours. Even if you fall outside of the refund rules we’ve described, you can submit a request and we’ll take a look at it.”

Large amount of work? You just have to delete any game content after the first few quests and add a picture advertising the full version, lol.

And I think my thinking is pretty valid because I usually hear from friends “no trial? well just gonna torrent then”, and once torrented, actually purchasing it won’t be an easy step, since it’s extra work to reinstall everything when you already “have it working”…

Steam Family Sharing. They can play your copy and test it out solo, see if it’s worth it.

Trial versions of all games you currently own.

I’d say it’s naive to assume otherwise; we’ve already had several comments here/on reddit from people who formerly pirated the game to try it out and then decided to purchase it. A trial version might not be a bad idea…

…plus there already is kind of a trial version already, right? It was used at the PAX East expo for Crate.

While it is a good argument for trial versions it doesn’t change the fact that there isn’t one currently and has never been one and it almost sounds like you think that by making this post they are going to just hop and say Oh, Yorkan’s friends need this pronto! Get on it!

Nevermind the fact that you aren’t the first to ask and as you can see there is still no trial version. Leading me to believe they decided internally that they didn’t want to deal with a trial version for whatever reasons.

Here is an interesting video, why there not more trial versions.

That actually makes sense. Thanks for this.

@ OP: We got the interwebs now. There are almost always some people streaming GD, and theres are TONS of videos with gameplay and the such.
Should be enough input to make a decision, imho.

as was mentioned, there are return policies on Steam and GoG, so you cannot exactly ‘try before you buy’, but you can ‘try and get your money back’

As a side note, when thinking about trial versions, I came to the conclusion that it could really help with software piracy in general if more companies released trial versions of their games. Do you agree?

no, it would make next to no difference

it is somewhat more involved than that…

And I think my thinking is pretty valid because I usually hear from friends “no trial? well just gonna torrent then”, and once torrented, actually purchasing it won’t be an easy step, since it’s extra work to reinstall everything when you already “have it working”…

nah, you can try via Steam so there is no need to torrent, that is a lameass excuse, and even more so is liking it and then saying it is too much hassle to install the legit version when there really is no problem at all, the save games transition right over for pretty much any game out there.

These are excuses that get used, but that is all they are. Most people still pirate games even when there is a demo and as I said, pretending that ‘installing a legit game is too much hassle’ is not even a good excuse

That’s a good point too. The people who are going to pirate for “trial” purposes would often be the type to buy the game anyway, if they like it. If they don’t like it they’ll probably delete it and move on.

Just like on the other side of the coin are the people who have no intention of buying it whether they like it or not and will pirate it regardless.

So in the end having a trial version (or not) would still likely have a minimal impact in the grand scheme of things.
