What build benefits most from this set? I’ve found a couple of the pieces, seeing if it’s worth me building it or just trade for another class.
Pyromancer, possibly Commando, maybe a… ranged Saboteur, idk. Ulzuin’s set is not really great and probably wouldn’t be considered BiS for much of anything. I tried making it work for a Pyro and it seriously just kind of sucked. The weapon needs something to make it actually worth using, in particular.
EDIT: Maybe a ranged Elementalist, since the set has significant lightning/electrocute bonuses besides fire/burn bonuses.
The helm is amazing (you need a recipe for it though) for anyone using fire or lightning damage, I use it on my Ultos set Warder.
Armor gives you attack speed and other useful stats, making it a very good single piece for any Fire Strike user.
It goes downhill from here.
Shoulders give bonus to Static Strike which got nerfed pretty hard and most builds prefer Brimstone now (and Shadowflame Mantle gives +4 Brimstone so it’s strictly better). Still any Dual pistol Fire Strike build (usually Sorcerer, can be Commando or Pyro as well) still wants to use them.
Amulet is decent if you want to complete the set, but Empowered Essence of Beronath is usually better unless you play some hybrid gun/caster build with Grenado and Mortar as well as Fire Strike. I have no idea why this item doesn’t have 10% physical -> fire conversion, all other items of this type have conversion. Almost looks like an oversight on the devs’ part.
The rifle is utter trash, especially considering how amazing Hellborne is. There is never a situation where you want to use Ulzuin rifle over Hellborne. Even the set completion proc is worse than the proc you get with Hellborne, especially since Ulzuin’s rifle has no attack speed bonuses and low base speed so it never triggers. It’s a shame, since the other sets at least have somewhat decent weapons, and the Ultos axe is absolutely insane.
edit + tl;dr
Don’t bother giving an arm and a leg for Ulzuin items, after the buffs I’m fairly certain that the Justicar armor set + one of the Beronath amulets is strictly better for 99% of Demolitionist builds. Except Elementalist, but Elementalist wants Ultos or Light’s Defender.
I tried full Ulzuin’s on my elementalist and I could easily do all ultimate main campaign content with it. With Ulzuin’s Pyroclasm and Wyrmbone Handguards the amount of damage you can put out is pretty high.
This is a Stormheart static strike saboteur made post-nerf i can drop anything with this build. Uses the Ulzuin’s Set w/o the weapon (the weapon sucks). The set as whole isn’t very good when compared to DM, Markovian, Warborn and Ultos but end-game builds can be made around it.
If they intend to improve it then that weapon needs a proc of its own kinda like the other end-game set weapons have. Give it a two-handed only WPS rather than a conventional proc
If i could just use the 5 piece set bonus on a melee character… I’d combo it with Flame Torrent all day.
IMO there is nothing wrong with the damage on the set. It just can’t survive very well in crucible.
If you consider the weapon’s bonuses in terms of opportunity cost, it has 10% crit, more burn damage, extra attack speed and a proc which honestly hits really hard, procs often and hits half the screen around you.
With my build I blew Valbury to hell first time while enemy OA was inflated.
The way I see it, in terms of Crucible, the problem with the set is that it offers very little inherent survival. Otherwise it’s fine. As you say though, there are sets which are better.
I recently got the full Ulzuin’s set and proceded to replace my “keeper of the Flame” set on my commando. I have been a bit disappointed.
The amor is decent and he offers some good bonuses and defensive stats. What really sucks is the 2h rifle. It’s simply too slow, even with the AS set bonus, and it doesn’t kill enemies fast enough, putting you in dangerous situations.
They should put an AS bonus on this rifle, like all the others counterparts have (hellborne, Flame Keeper’s Repeater, Brimstone). Or increase its base damage.
Yeah, the rifle is really underwhelming. 20%+ Attack Speed would make it a viable alternative to Hellbourne. Maybe they just forgot to add it?
I do like the head/chest/shoulder pieces though. They work well for a Commando. They also have good resists, although a bit of extra HP would be nice. Also one of my favourite looking sets
You get 16% IAS from the 5 piece set bonus, making Hellbourne only 6% faster.
Flamespreader with 5-piece Ulzuin’s gives you:
- More offensive ability
- Much better proc
- Whopping 20% increase crit damage
- Lightning damage increase
- Much more base damage (of which less is piercing)
- Firestrike (which when over leveling is better than explosive strike IMO).
Hellbourne gives you:
- +2 skills
- Slightly more base burn damage (remember to consider the extra base burn from 5-piece Ulzuin’s)
- Slightly more attack speed
I don’t get why people think 5 piece Ulzuin’s damage sucks honestly. I had Avatar of Ulzuin, Wyrmbone Handguards and Ulzuin’s Pyroclasm all proccing all over the place with x2 crit bonus, 1400% increased fire damage, 1000% increased lightning damage (with % chance for more) and my Flamespreader shooting like a slow machine gun.
As I said, for main game content this set is fine. Not the best. For Crucible it lacks survival.
It’s on the 5-piece Ulzuin’s set bonus.
