Upcoming ARPGS

Leveling your weapon, that sounds like the system WoW currently uses. Hell, why not, and it seems you still have to go out and get crafting mats …by killing monsters (?), and find …ah… stuff. Might be nice.

in case of Wolves of Midgard i have many concerns ranging from combat, how they fill their world to the loot. It is a game I will wait with till some reviews land.

There’s a newer, harder to find post about them changing the way you get loot in Vikings…loot will drop now, but crafting will still be a thing in that game.

Mamba is correct. But the loot system is only a part of my concern. There are a number of issues I already have with the title.

  • The loot system, as was already mentioned. At first, they were planning to remove it completely, by swapping it to crafting. But really, no loot in ARPG game, almost the core element to genre? No loot system means no variable gear and equipment, the player is literally forced to use the same weapon all over again with incredible restrictions. And while I’m on this topic…

  • Crafting. It’s very linear, it doesn’t allow any freedom of choice. You are restricted to two weapons, basically, which you constantly upgrade. Also, I highly suspect the matts will go on to the point you will craft only the best possible equipment, again, limiting your customization.

  • Multiplayer. No LAN, only servers. Only TWO players at the same time. 555-come-on-now.jpg

  • No mod support means the game will die as the time goes on.

  • Only two classes, with barely noticable differences. I think only weapons are different, everything else is the SAME.

  • Damaging environments. Because, oh boy, it’s so fun to be under constant pressure of dying at any given time! I’m already sick with this shit in Grim Dawn, that’s the main reason I hate Valbury. But at least Crate allow us the moment of peace, by not stepping on floors. Here, you will be damaged by cold or heat ANYWHERE.

My thoughts are drifting towards a heavy realization that this, in fact, not an ARPG. It’s an arcade slasher.

You guys are wrong about the loot system. There IS random loot from random drops with random properties, but there isn’t an overload of items. (Grim dawn and TQ suffer from this tbh) On top of this, they retain the crafting system and runesmithing. There isn’t a whole lot of info about anything for this game, so some concern is warranted.

Unless they are straight up lying, but here is a dev post:

As for the weapons… You are allowed two weapon STYLES per playthrough, not two weapons. That means you can play with bow+sword or sword+staff or whatever and not just stick with one weapon throughout. Unless they changed it, that was what they have been reiterating for months now and I just read that again about 2 weeks ago.

Nope, they don’t. I absolutely love the sheer amount of availbale loot and the way you can choose your build and playstyle from it. I consider this a basic core of ARPG since Diablo days. Also the presence of crafting system doesn’t change the fact that it is still pretty limited.

This does not change a thing. They directly said that players shall be able to master only two weapon styles by the end of the game, thus, restricting our options to actually choose between different weapons anyway. No one wants to arrive at the end-game whith half-assed upgraded weapons. Oh, and while I’m at this how about throwing the leveling system in the suffering cauldron too?

If anyone interested in Vikings, there’s a stream with devs on twitch right now. Just joined it, combat looks fun, dunno about gear or gameplay mechanics variety, tho.

Um, yeah, think I’m gonna wait and see on this one. I don’t take kindly to devs touching my shinies.

And the cold “system” is just another silly meter. The reason you haven’t seen it done before, dude, is because it’s entirely frivolous.

I do like the dodge roll though.

This one looks amazing to me, cant wait for it to be released in NA!

is it singleplayer or MMO ? in case of second then :frowning:

MMO, not interested…

Any idea what Crate is going to do after the expansion? Grim Dawn 2 or something else? Pretty sure they are going to use the same game system as in TQ and GD.

They are working on a new game.

Even so, those backers and the Early Access customers who followed them helped build a stable foundation on which Bruno could build Crate Entertainment. Development on Grim Dawn proper is coming to an end, and Bruno estimates the game’s lifetime earnings have doubled or possibly even tripled the money spent making it. The studio is now working on an expansion for Grim Dawn that will launch early next year (probably), and has started work on a “totally different type of game” to launch after that, both of which will be funded by Grim Dawn.

“Working on this project is like easy mode to some extent. We’ve already got the funding for it. I know how we’re going to release, just not necessarily at what point… I think that we have all the funding we need to complete it and whether we release on Early Access or not is more a question of to what extent we want early feedback on the game.”

So no arpg anymore. I’m disappointed.

Dont be. Grimdawn is the best arpg since titan quest, and diablo 2, with full mod support for years to come! It’s literally going to be 10 years before something releases coming close to the calibur of this exquisitely, crafted ARPG. And I plan on playing this for atleast 10 more years

You don’t seem to trust Wolcen.

It will use Unity and it won’t be an arpg.

As for if and when we do see a GD2, that too will likely come with a new engine. GD is the TQ engines last hurrah, as they say. As much as I love it, it is time for it to be put to rest (at least for future game projects) as the march of tech progress is too much for its “old” bones.

What makes you so sure that they would keep on using it, beats me, as Crate has indicated enough times on the forums that they won’t be doing any such thing. I think they are painfully aware of the engines age and limitations, as the numerous performance threads that arise make clear. I think they’d be eager to move on to new territory after the years they already invested here (altho impressively successful, regardless of the engine drawbacks).

Maybe some more info at E3 then.

After too much of Grim Dawn, it’s hard to play another Arpg… Every other experience seems to be a downgrade to me:cry:

I don’t actually. They seem to have cool ideas, but doubt it’ll ever reach a functionally fun and engaging experience. I know it isn’t right now since it is still “Alpha”. The pace they’re going…by the time the game actually releases fully it’ll be out of date.

yeah because Crate is so big they’ll get a booth there or speak. The last time they did that was two years ago at PAX. Last time at PAX Zantai went because he had bought tickets himself. Not in function with their own booth.

Crate is working on the new project. Mostly in pre-production design/conceptual phase. It will be in the Unity engine and it will be some form of strategy game. That is all Arthur Bruno (owner of Crate) has released as statement.

It would be stupid to make a Grim Dawn 2 when there is still plenty life and longevity in the current Grim Dawn. On top of that, Zantai has stated that after 3-4 years of working on this game the devs are getting tired of it. They want a new challenge and make something different. Which is normal and understandable since every job gets tiresome if you don’t change things up every few years.
