Vegetarian Village Experiment [successfully completed]

Hi there
I wanted to try an experiment: a vegetarian village. Is that possible? This game is indeed hard already.

Rules:

  • no animals for food, so no hunters, no fisher and no barn
  • no trade for raw or smoked meat/fish
  • peaceful mode is allowed

Consequences:

  • food sources are only gatherer and fields
  • less production needed (no barn, no cheesemaker, no smoker, no bowmaker, no weaponsmithing, no armorsmithing)
  • no hide source
  • instead of trading for hide I traded shoes and jackets directly so I could skip shoemaker and tannery too

Conclusion part1:
I am at 130 population, already enough houses upgraded, ready for upgrade to tier3 when I hit 150.
Yes, the start was rough, needed many gatherer and fields more early. I had some winter with no extra food in store. It became better with bread. That’s the only food that is produced during winter.
The lack of shoes and jackets in the beginning was not really an issue.

Do I need 3 food types for tier4 upgrade? I cannot find any information about food types. what are the food type categories?

update:
After 9 hours I am approaching the last town hall upgrade. No problems yet, graveyard still almost empty. No starving, no freezing, just natural deaths.
With rich resources it can be done just fine.

But I still need to know more information about food types? Are there 3 different vegetarian food types?

Protein, Grain, Vegetable, Fruit, Dairy are the food types. I don’t know if fruits and veg count as the same. You can try making sure you have enough fruit, veg, and bread and see if that works. Clicking on a house will show you the food need and their current storage:

If there is bread, fruit, and veg in the storage of the building but the Food Types needed is still 2/3 then you’ll have to go into dairy.

I think if I was the 5th person in that house… I’d be seeking shelter too!!!

@Nater I think if I was in a village that refused to allow me to eat meat, I would be drinking too.

Final Conclusion:
I just reached tier4 upgrade and 320 population.
I can call this experiment a great success. T4 House upgrades also working. good to know.

This experiment was not only restricting me, it let me also use the available space better because I didn’t need to build so many industry buildings. Also the peace mode fits perfect in this experiment. No need for defense buildings and weapon and armor industry.

My villager have a healthy, safe and morally better life.

What foods did you use to pull this off finally?

everything from fields, some orchards and many gatherer huts. and bread… everything healthy

Good to hear it’s possible with that mix! I was struggling to get houses to convert with those foods but I wasn’t sure if it was my supply chain or if it wasn’t registering the different foods.

Congrats on the experiment!

Reggie, I really appreciate this experiment. Having been vegan it is interesting to see.

Even more, when I finally have to tell my vegan GF that I am spending this many hours playing a PC game, I can be like “there’s a vegan option too, Love!”:rofl::rofl:

(I also appreciate the experiment as it shows the versatility of the game and the work the FF devs have put into it)

For vegan, you still need to be careful with your foragers not to pick eggs.
(and no beer)

True on thr eggs.

Beer, I’m assuming you are referring to the honey? It depends on what vegans you talk to, some call it and animal product some do not.

Nice experiment. But you probably use compost in your fields and compost, in FF, is made from animal waste: humans.

That is flawed, it doesn’t make it non-vegetarian. If compost = eating animals, then everything in the world is made of animals. If that was true, it would also make all humans cannibales.

To make compost, it is not necessary to add animal excrement. Find out.

I know it’s not necessarily. I’m a farmer. I’m saying it doesn’t make it non vegetarian.

City water is sewer and grey water run through a water treatmenplant… when I drink it I am not drinking urine and feces (unless the plant isn’t working right).
