Villagers Need Clothing! message

I got this notification which I’ve seen before and I’m sure everyone has. I’m trying to figure out how it comes up with these numbers.

My town has 1420 people. Some of the houses are shelters or homesteads so I think those people may not count as needing clothing. So in Town Center / Settlment Status, this is what it says:

Hide Coats: 631/1308. Yes it’s true I need more, but where does the 753 number come from? According to my math, I’m only short by 677.

Linen Clothes: 1425/1308. This baffles me because this means I actually have a surplus, right?

Shoes: 1171/1308. I need more shoes too, but again the math says I’m short only 137.

I’m short because it’s hard to get enough pelts, especially when you’re trying to make coats, shoes, shields, and armor all at the same time. Anyone have thoughts on the numbers?

Oh yikes! Looks like you need way more Barns.

It’s probably counting the clothing items that aren’t far from wearing out

I’m still trying to figure out how many barns to plan for with 2000 people. My goal is to produce about the same amount of smoked meat, vegetables, greens, and beans. Of course there are variables like fertility that makes that challenging.

As of now I build one for each 500 people, which is probably not enough. Maybe I’ll try 2-3 more barns, about one barn for each 300 people.

Also another thing is having a perimeter of upgraded Hunter Cabins around town, with 3-4 traps per cabin. That also helps evening out Meat Production across the year for your Smokers

I think of hunters as necessary for early game but not a significant contributor after the barns are built. Someone once said the hunter upgrade is bad because they will spend too much time checking traps and not doing enough actual hunting, causing their output to decrease.

That’s why you don’t have them on deer spawns, you just max out traps. They will still be far more useful than the huge excess of Labourers you’ll gain at such a high pop. They’ll provide you with Leather without needing to grow Hay to attain it

The upgrade is very worthwhile if you have a good area to run traps in. You can usually find double chevron trapping areas if the work area overlaps water and bushes/trees. A hunter in one of these areas can produce 400+ food a year, which roughly doubles the output from hunting deer. Now the traps do cost a lot of iron, and if you have multiple trappers your iron can tank badly. If you can sustain the iron; trappers in proper areas vastly outperform regular hunters though.

One of my trappers making over 500 food in a year.

2000 villagers are going to eat 48,000 food per year. So you want 1/4 of it in meat which is 12,000.
1st tier barn gives about 930 meat (or ~1300 with 2 KP invested into Animal rearing). So you need 10-13 barns

Your math is correct as far as it goes, but if you upgrade the barns you can get approximately 2000 meat from each. My current town has 1800 people with 4 upgraded barns, producing about 8000 meat per year. I also have 7 hunters (not trappers) scattered around that contribute about another 1000 meat. With the vegs and fruit I have 8 months of food stored up.

It just started a new year so the cow slaughter will come soon. You would expect I’d be just about out of meat by this time of the year but I actually still have about 800 raw meat waiting to be smoked and 2000 smoked meat in storage. Most houses are well stocked with meat, the rest are victims of the poor logistics. Eventually the meat will get to everyone.

My point is, I really don’t think you need 10-13 barns.

Hi; I’ve always wondered why killing a bear yielded neither meat nor pelts, unlike a wolf…unless I am mistaken…

Bears are a generic carcass the same as deer, so they give the same yields.

Thanks a lot Kholdy… so I’ll make sure my hunters retrieve the bear’s carcass, even if it was soldiers who killed it !
