Wagons won't seem to carry sand, glassblowers are walking to pit at edge of map to get stock

State breakdown of Glassmaker is 9% working, 82% transferring goods. The wagons never go get sand from the edge of the map, but don’t have a problem picking up wood from a nearby work camp. Glassblowers are walking to the sandpit and carrying back anywhere from 1-6 bits of sand at a time (thats all I’ve seen so far.) So every industry depending on glass is at a standstill. I have 4 wagons and none of them show sand in their list of things carried in the last year.

I tried setting a minimum stock level for sand (and coal) in the stockyard but that seems to have no effect, I’ve never seen sand or coal in stock there at all.

The problem is that you don’t have enough sand in stock, so your glassmakers have reserved all of it to carry back just to get some. This means the wagon won’t pick it up (because someone’s already going to get it) because there’s not enough sitting around to be worth the wagon trip.

Assuming you’re producing enough sand for when the glassmakers are actually going full bore, the solution is, a bit counter-intuitively, to turn off the glassworks until enough sand piles up for the wagon to move it. (and if you’re producing more glass than you need, possibly reducing the number of glassmakers) If you’re not producing enough sand to support your glassmakers, this will eventually happen every time, as they burn through your backlog of sand and not enough is brought in from the mines.

Ooh thanks for letting me know. Now I can get around it, but I think the game needs to put a max distance that workers will travel to get stuff to prevent this from happening.

Completely agree. I came to the forums to literally bring this “bug” to light but I’m glad it’s technically a feature although a silly one.

I think we need a switch, that forces a building to only pick up from warehouses. Really want this for the Trade Centre i.e.

What I started doing is building my mines (plus road and Temporary Shelter) early with just one worker to build up a stockpile before it’s time to build what uses it. If things take longer than expected, then it’s easy to just release that worker into the labourer pool in the meantime.
