Thanks much for the truly helpful guide, as a new player I have used this as a basis for my first character. It is in my nature to play the “what if” game so I take numerous random left turns from time to time but I enjoy having your proven framework to fall back on when a tangent does not work out.
I’ll add my 2 iron to the next guide request, I’d love to see how you have built your dual wielding Commando as I am literally itching to try that class next.
Thanks for the feedback Squib.
Though I have Justicar helm recipe, I didn’t bother crafting it, but I will now. Golemborn greaves seem awesome. I guess it’s time to farm some more.
Strange as it may seem, I got the faceguard in from the East Marsh boss at level 18. Put it away until my character reached level 40. Play veteran.
Has anybody made a retaliation character with Shaman and somebody other than a soldier?
First of all, I love this build as it takes a rather relaxed and laid back approach to the hell that melee based classes in these games can be.
I got a question; how do you deal with bosses or mobs that refuse to engage you and just stand back and shoot you, outside beating them to death slowly, over a geographical age. And a bit in the same line, regenative bosses. I ran into one I couldn’t put a dent in, as I simply didn’t do enough damage with my weapon to beat his regen and he happened to be an archer as well.
Had to just give up and abandon that fight as it could have gone on for all eternity with no winner.
Yes, but it’s also available as a skill granted by an item iirc.
There are two videos against ranged foes - one a weapon bearer, the other a caster. And also see his tips:
Tips:
Draw near to the enemy - Many ranged enemies will melee you when you’re close (like those bastard skeleton priests and witch doctors).
Get retaliation procs - Items that retaliate (doom bolt, vines, lightning in my build for example, see video) will help kill everyone on the map (not just those in melee range) and compliments your retaliation damage very well.
Collect Retaliation Gear AND Reflect Gear - Retaliation gear is more common and more valuable since 80% of your enemies are melee and retaliation has a much higher average damage output than reflect, but don’t neglect keeping reflect gear. Though more rare, and usually it’s a green item, reflect attributes will make dealing with ranged enemies easier at higher difficulties.
War Cry - If your gear isn’t killing as fast as you’d like. War Cry with it’s 33% reduction to health would be worth 1 point to help speed up the process. Plus this works on ranged.
This is not answer to my question at all. I’m asking to explain second tip on the list u copied for some reason(and i quoted this in my first post). Are there skills or item abilities that can deal part of retaliation damage? What OP meant by “doom bolt, vines, lightning”? Which “retaliation procs” can help me kill “everyone on the map (not just those in melee range)”?
As others have already pointed out, OP meant “xx% chance when hit/block/attack etc” items. Some of these items come with ranged offensive attack skills and they (along with your reflect) help kill those ranged/caster mobs. I did not use doom bolt proc items, but I used something like below to clear ranged/caster mobs. :
Those items proc against mobs outside of melee range and kill ranged mobs (though slowly). They are very useful when you kill a hero/boss. While you pound on hero/boss, ranged mobs slowly kill themselves. For example, when I farm Fabius, by the time I am done with Fabius, all ranged/caster mobs are usually dead. Just make sure that you don’t stand behind line of sight of those ranged/caster mobs so that they actually hit you and kill themselves.
First I’d like to say thank you for a great build. Having a blast at level 40 (so far) having enemies hitting me and then either blowing up or flying in the air. However, I have a question. In your notes you mention that after following all your instructions up to that point for skill allocation I should have 1 extra point left if I did the quest for Kasparov. I did that quest (and got the point AFAIK) but I checked and I correctly allocated all the skill points to where you indicated and I have no points left over. I added all the points I allocated and they total 118 which is correct (39x3)+1. Certainly not a big deal but did I miss something? Thanks again for a great build.
Hmm. I’ve had others line it up according to the guide but it looks like you’ve double checked. I’ll have to re-examine it to make sure. (i’ll need to anyways now that hidden path adds 3 points). Glad you’re enjoying the build!
