What does Armor value on items really do?

Grim Dawn wiki on Armor

" It reduces the amount of physical damage you take from enemies. "

Yet there’s no difference in actal physical damage resist value on a character when
trading high armor value armors with lowvalue armors .

So after over 2000 hours into the game, i still don’t understand the use of armor-value
on armors . Maybe we could have someone shed some light in this question and
give us a permanent answer to this question.

how about the official game guide? Which in fact the wiki article links to

flat vs % value
armour also reduces flat phys individually if an attack has multiple sources of physical in a single hit, so 200 armour gloves can reduce 600 dmg if there were 3 sources (in effect i think it’s rare/limited enemies have more than 1-2 phys sources tho)

resist will always reduce a dmg value by the listed % amount, this means %phys can be very good against high phys attack hits
Armour reduces flat amount, so it can be great against smaller sources. (in effect it can be easier to stack armour than supe rhigh phys res these days)
Armour reducing a flat amount is then additionally impacted by your %armour absorb effectiveness, absorb below 100 always lets physical dmg through no matter if that attack was lower than your armour rating or bigger.
So 200AR wont reduce 200 dmg on a 100 phys dmg attack if you’re only at 70% absorb, you will still take 30dmg

And because many many spells have a physical damage component, having armor is important even if it looks like a “fire spell”

Also armor does nothing against physical damage over time (internal trauma), only phys res will help with that

Ok so lets for the sake of arguement say we have 1 Chest with 200 armor and 1 chest
with 10 armor . Enemy hits us with 500 damage, what’s the differense in damage we
would take ?.

The “xp” leveling armor has an armorvalue of 10, while most normal pieces climbs
to over 200 armor really fast in the game. This means that the Lokarr set would run
out of practical use even as early as act 1 .

if you have 0% phys res and 100% armor absorb you would take

490 dmg vs. 300 dmg, if that hit was on your chest (26% chance)

Remember that “flat” sources of armour like from devotions, masteries such as phantasmal armor, on rings, amulet, belt, medal, relic - is added to ALL armor slots.

Did you read the game guide?

And yes leveling with Lokarr set is a risky buisness, I have no idea why rektbyprotoss still does that in HC considering exp pot gives soo much more exp:P

150% extra xp is better than 100%.

But yes, the Lokarr set drops in viability really fast due to it’s non existant armor values.
The pain starts in Old arkovia.

yes it is 25% more exp/time (250 exp vs 200 exp) but you will have low armor. I just use lokarr set for doing the “read all easy to grab lore notes” then off to use real armor stuff with +% dmg etc

Is everything clear now regarding armor?

Yes a bit clearer, thanks.

If you cap your resistances, it actually works fine until the lategame. I usually only take it off at lvl 94 and get there with about 1-2 deaths maximum unless my leveling build is bad. What usually kills me in Old Arkovia is a lack of pierce resistance, the lack of armour is nearly irrelevant for leveling.

There is a ton of armour in the devotions and some masteries, which are even better because bonus armour affects all slots. So for leveling, noone stops you from looking for bonus armour elsewhere, instead of equipment pieces.

Lokarr armour is painful to get, though. Right there with the SR armor. Just thinking I have to go through the whole crucible monumental bore just to get a single piece of the set, puts me in lazy mode for the day.

For anyone liking arena combat, it’s a fun farm. For others like myself, it is an impossible armor to get. In my whole history of the game I remember getting one piece once. And I had to push myself to levels of self-inflicted pain.

You’re thinking of something… other than Lokarr’s set. It’s not a Crucible reward.

OMG! Yeah, I was. I keep making this mistake everytime I return to the game. It’s just weird now…

Thanks!

Check your pierce res as well, the skelly crossbowmen are utterly awful in that regard.
