What does "only mature trees" mean?

My work camp have just been caught chopping Maple trees with a yield of only 4 (on one of the rare occasions I manage to catch them doing any work whatsoever). Now I know maple trees can have a yield of as much as 10. Is this working as designed? Yes I do have “only mature trees” checked.

In RimWorld you can click on a tree and it will tell you how grown it is. There’s no feedback like that here so it’s fairly confusing what this means or how to tell one tree from another.

As far as I know mature trees are able to spawn new trees around them. Mature trees have variable amounts of wood, but can be mature even at low wood yields.

Mature trees have reached their maximum yield.

Looks like we don’t have a consensus then. Can some dev confirm please, or is there a bug in that dialog setting?

only trees that don’t still giggle at fart jokes.

I will say, A work camp with 1 worker can have idle time with mature trees selected. And this is selecting a very densely forested area.

Maybe OP is right and they are chopping the younger trees?
I was just under the impression that a work camp should be able to sustain a forest forever.

I think it is meaning that only the mature trees are harvested, leaving the younger ones to take their place after some years of growth. You’re right that it isn’t clear at what age or resource level the trees are at when this happens. Maybe it is only age. Just that having only mature trees selected means the patch will regrow given the opportunity. Without it selected that won’t happen.

Mature trees are the ones that have a chance to spawn new trees around them. This option allows younger trees to get more yield, but the implementation seems off since it can be as early as 4 wood.

That’s certainly what the word means literally. It’s just I couldn’t believe the game would be daft enough to really mean it. I mean why would you kill every tree that is old enough to seed a new one unless you want a particular area of forest completely barren of trees? If there are players who really want this then let’s leave it, but add two new checkboxes “dead trees” and “trees at their maximum yield”. The reason I was using work camps was that I was desperately short of logs for firewood. It was an emergency. I needed them to focus on maximum yield per work day.

But they also chop dead trees… can dead trees still spawn new ones? Seems to me the two definitions don’t fully overlap.

I agree. They need check box to say. Chop dead trees and maximum yield only. Not a mature oak wood at 6 when it can go to 7
