What will the new class be?

Based on this hint by Zantai we can state that the other mastery is already in game (or at least its name). Can we think of iconic masteries from bosses/npcs/etc. that are not well covered yet in the current mastery set?

Outcast: Witch - the arcanist mastery doesn’t quite fit it Id say (no elemental, more towards aether & chaos). In game examples: Anasteria, Rallia.
Also the spirit guides Sahdina, - Initially I went to look up their names to put in the list of Witches, but figured it might be a unique mastery. However the first one we encounter, Sahdina, she say herself in the opening video she is only a witch.

Order of Death’s Vigil: Necromancer - cold and chaos damage, summoning skeletons - would be close to an Occultist though - Question: if it is Necromancer, how can it be different from the Occultist? Most of Death’s Vigil’s NPCs qualify under this (or a combo with another mastery)

Kymon’s Chosen: Paladin/Templar - fire and lightning - currently placed in Elementalist. Key difference that it would not be the tribal lightning throwing around we get from Shaman, nor the engineering gadgets from Demolitionist. Most of Kymon’s Chosen would fit under this (though currently they would fit under Elementalist / Commando / Warder)

Black Legion: Deathmarked - Ranged/Necromancer? - example of these are the gentleman in the pine barrens giving quests. Not very clear what their skill set would be, as they only give quests. (Then again, we also did not know much about the inquisitor - speculate away!)

Priest - the undead have quite a few of them: Grand Priest Zarthuzellan; High Priest Rolderathis - mention is made of one priest in of Kymon’s Chosen by the name of Orwell, though based on the stats of his gun he is an Elementalist (Demo/Shaman).

Witchdoctor - Groble clans all have one, though we have not seen much of its skill set, it would probably be somewhere between the Shaman and the Occultist, but without the focus on pets.

Scout - There is a scout added in the last patch, an easteregg towards the 8th class?

Archer - Quite a few around, but currently the longbow is not in game - potential for a dedicated crossbow mastery?

Skirmisher - present in the Outlaw faction. A Skirmisher class based on both shield + Gun would give us both a 3rd gun focused class (With Inquisitor looking to be a gun+spell class), AND a second shield heavy class (Soldier being the only class that has interaction with shields period atm).(Thank you Steelflame)

Tracker - present in Beastkin enemies - ranged with a net to immobilize its enemies. Inspired by TQs Hunting mastery. Focus on 2-h ranged weapon (crossbow or gun), ranged buffs and slows - possible through poison/cold (think Ice projectile - similar to how Demolitionist have fire/lighting)

Inventor - Kasparov’s side kick, but not really a mage. Perhaps the above quote only refers to the name - and would this mimic the fan made mastery with gun turrets and other steampunkish engineering that is already in game.

We can also tackle this the other way around, by making a list of NPCs, and try to establish what mastery they are:

Captain John Bourbon - Soldier?
Kasparov - Arcanist?
Warden Krieg - Soldier / Warder
Ulgrim - Nightblade?
Anasteria - Witch
Sahdina - Witch
Edmund " Shanks" Doyle - Demolitionist?
“Moneybags” Martin - Soldier? Demolitionist? Commando?
Darius Cronley - Soldier? Demolitionist? Commando?
Direni - Occulist?
Elsa - Soldier? Blademaster?
Balvoruuk - ? (Necromancer?)
Captain Somer - Soldier?
Inquisitor Creed - Inquisitor
Rallia - Arcanist? (Witch?)
Uroboruuk - ? (Necromancer?)
Hargate - Arcanist (Madman?)
Deathmark Kadris - Deathmark (is Deathmark a mastery of its own, or a combination from the 8th mastery + nightblade/soldier?)
Deathmark Vallar - Deathmark
Deathmark Harra - Deathmark
Scout Thalna - Scout
Captain Brastock - Soldier?
Keval - Nightblade
Theodin Marcell (Shaper of Flesh) - ?
Ughdar Claz - Occulist

Feel free to add any note worthy NPCs I have missed

why not a class based on outlaws or bandits?

If the new class doesn’t have a summon, I’ll be very disappointed. I would love a necromancer, but would also accept an aether based summoner.

Summon those aetherial hulks!

The only one that really stands out among basic enemies we see are either Death’s Vigil members, or more notably, Skirmishers from Cronley’s gang.

A Skirmisher class based on both shield + Gun would give us both a 3rd gun focused class (With Inquisitor looking to be a gun+spell class), AND a second shield heavy class (Soldier being the only class that has interaction with shields period atm).

This makes me think they are most likely to be the new class IMO.

A mastery that focuses on shield + gun would be actually be great. I can’t think of anyone that actually uses this combo and a mastery that supported it would do wonders.

Maybe a line of WPS specific for Gun + Shield.

With shields, you are already SUPER tanky with investment into soldier. I’m afraid if they add another shield mastery, you will obtain immortality.

My bet is on a Dreadlord / necromancer, a la Death’s Vigil. Cold, Vitality, hopefully some aether, maybe some %life reduction and probably a summon or two.

Haha, indeed

Another angle is to look at what damage types are underrepresented. Aether only has support from a single class at this point. If the new class is Aether based, it might rule out a Death’s Vigil class since they are against Aether.

They are against Aetherials not aether dmg afaik, many of them use aether tendrils to hit you with them.

I’m hoping necromancer, maybe the class based around undead pets and contagion (ala bloody pox type abilities)

Aren’t most of them Demolitionist?

Thanks, an excellent suggestion!

Immortal, but also slow in killing things - I already find the Commando/Warder tank builds to be very slow (and terrible at killing anything that does not hit them in melee to proc retaliation)

Matching that with the quote in the OP - what Aether based mastery is already in game? I can only come up with the Witch

The game currently doesn’t have any real aetherials in game. Either they are constructs, possessed/corrupted people or wraiths, which all make it difficult to distil a specific mastery. A mastery would be “Taken” but all player characters are “Taken”.

I have almost 0 retaliation dmg on my pure soldier, and still with good gear he drops Fabius in ~1 min. That is bit slow but not to much and its one class build with totally defensive setup.

I’m pretty sure that’s vitality tendrils.

Maybe, dont know for sure, they look the same.

I am thinking a Necromancer or a Priest.
