Where the mods at?

I literally made an account just to ask this. This game is amazing, i like it way more than POE and Diablo 3. Plus, many reviewers feel it is also amazing as well as being one of the top 3, along with the before mentioned POE and D3. So i dont know much about coding at all or their modding tools but from what i can tell, the modding scene is pretty much dead, and has been since its original release. Is the community for it just not as big as im thinking it is, or is it hard to mod or what am i missing here?

Welcome to the forum.

No, not dead at all. There are several mods in the Modding Projects section and also in the Utilities and Resources. Modding Guides and Tutorials has threads on how to get started modding the game.

I expect it’s more that many mods are “on hold” until the new Forgotten Gods expansion comes out some time in the 1st quarter of 2019 since it’s likely to be the last big content push for the game. It’s just easier to mod once something is done rather than fix things that get broken in a mod when a new patch comes out.

Grim Dawn is an indie games so the scene will be smaller. It’s quite far from dead though, there’s Grimarillion, a mod that adds 21 masteries to GD including 9 of the 10 from Titan Quest, 6 from Diablo 3 and 6 that apparently are from D&D. There’s also Reign of Terror, another mod that is re-creating Diablo 2. Includes all the classes but with Grim Dawn’s sytems. The team is even now planning on updating the mod to include Act 3 around Monday of next week.

There initially were a few more mods, then the first expansion was released which required changes to existing mods to keep them compatible.

Some mod authors didn’t want to spend the effort and dropped their mod, some made the adjustments and yet others went on a hiatus to wait for the game to stabilize first, which is something that was not helped by the announcement of the second expansion. We will see who of the hiatus group returns and who lost interest in the meantime eventually. Potentially there is a 4th group of people who waited for the stabilization before even starting their mod, kinda like a hiatus before you have anything to show, we have no idea how big / small that group is though.

Apart from that GD lends itself less to modding than say TL, as you can only load one mod at a time, to avoid conflicts between the mods (something TL did not solve, they just left it up to the users to figure out whether there are conflicts). Because of that you will find very few small tweak mods but about the same number of big mods as you find for TL2. So while the overall number is significantly lower, that misrepresents the overall picture.

What exactly are you looking for in a mod?

If you’re looking for more classes/items, try Grimarillion, it’s the most up-to-date compilation of masteries (30 total). If you want to play a mastery not included in Grimarillion, find another mod somewhere in the forums, don’t request for it to be added. (won’t happen)

If you want a new map, atm there’s only 2 iirc, Nyadimar and Reign of Terror. RoT is incomplete, not sure about Nyadimar.

If you want additional features… depends what you want.
