Where's my stuff?

To me the most frustrating aspect of this game is trying to figure out where my stuff is and why it’s not being moved to where I say to put it. There’s this example from my current game where my coal has apparently vanished. It is a very early game with not much built yet.

  1. Resources panel says I have 40 coal in storage.
  2. I have only 1 place to store coal, a stockyard that gets a minimum quota of 50. It has no coal.
  3. I have 1 foundry, the only building that would use coal. Building production has been toggled off since it was built because I wanted to stockpile some coal before I turn it on. There is no coal in storage there and there has been no iron produced there.
  4. I have 1 coal mine with 16 in storage. If I’m supposed to have 40 in storage and 16 of that is in the mine, that leaves 24 coal that’s supposed to be in the stockyard, right?
  5. I checked all 4 of my transport wagons, not on any of those either. So where is my coal and how do I find it?

Update: I watched a transport pick up the coal and deliver it to a market. Case closed. I need to be more careful about what the markets are allowed to stock. Still, it would be great if there was a way for the game to highlight all the places where a specific resource is stored.

Other buildings besides the foundry use coal. Probably gone to those.

Hint: Distance also matters. I typically construct a charcoal burner near my brick maker to provide the coal needed for bricks. Whenever possible I place my foundries and smiths near the iron and coal mines. I’ve seen noticeably faster/better production when these producers are located near their resources.
This is true for all producing facilities, but it’s almost impossible to have all producers located near their raw materials. Sometimes the raw materials are not conveniently located or are scattered about.

  1. Can confirm Marketplaces will stock coal like a MFer unless you unselect Coal from the UI. Since I also unselect raw meat and raw fish, I make it rote but seeing 90% of my Coal in a market and being unable to get it moved except when workers at production units needed a handful was not fun.
  2. Have one or more Stockyards next to those buildings as possible. If you have the space, the saved transit time is worth the 20 Logs and space.
