Settlement defense is pretty much the only thing that is stopping me from completely loving this game. If there was some way to build walls like in Stronghold where they give height and cover bonuses instead of being a blocker I would love it.

It would be nice to have something like that. Archers on ramparts behind walls were quite a common tactic in the past.
I would also like to see the ability to have archers and infantry garrison towers. A tower that’s an in-between the standard tower and fort would be a nice addition for that. Perhaps a 2x2 footprint with space for 5 archers and 3 infantry that are garrisoned from a barracks. The small guard towers don’t really pack a punch later in the game, and forts don’t make sense everywhere. An in between option would be amazing.
