Hello boys and girls and welcome to GD. Chances are if you clicked this thread you are interested in one of the following:
(i) Hardcore Ultimate viable builds;
(ii) Doom and destruction;
(iii) High damage characters.
(iv) Hybrid pet builds that are easy to play.
(v) A viable alternative to the old and tired Conjurer builds that revolve either around pets or vitality damage.

Because I suspect some of you may be impatient and want to know how the character performs against high level Ultimate threats I will provide the video section right away.

General Build presentation (includes Fabius and Moosilauke kills as well as pretty much every boss) : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3yMc9hp5piI

I. SHORT DESCRIPTION

Part chronomancer, part master of the forbidden arts, the character I am about to present you is extremely “noob friendly” in terms of mechanics but requires some gear in order to operate as advertised. The basic idea is as follows – 98-99% of the game you will be using pets (Hellhound and Swarmlings) + primal strike to clear trash mobs, unique monsters and act bosses. This way you will not have to “facetank” anything (although you can), you will conserve mana and, generally speaking, you will be outside of the harm’s way. For nemeses and hard unique monsters (i.e. the Mad Queen), however, you will leave the pets aside and become an agent of destruction capable of dealing over 250.000 dps. More explicitly, you have an 8 second window provided by Time Dilation in which you have to deal obscene amounts of damage such that everything dies. If you can’t pull this off you are basically dead because you will have zero mana and all your circuit-breakers will be on cooldown. That or you run away like a headless chicken. Because destroying nemeses in 8-9 seconds can be tricky for a new player even with the perfect setup, I advise you to read section VI of this guide (i.e. “Boss Challenge”) before experimenting in vivo.

For Grim Dawn veterans: In making this build I did not aim to create the most powerful character I could. Indeed, Nemeses + Mad Queen kill times can be considered competitive at <10 seconds (<6.5 for Mad Queen and <9 for Fabius), survivability is sufficiently high such that all challenges can be done without dying (0 Deaths after around 6 days of playtime and still going) and you will have maximum movement speed 80% of the time . In over 100 trials against Fabius, for example, I have encountered him with some pretty crazy weapons and I was not always able to destroy him in under 9 seconds (sometimes it can take as long as 13-14 sec if you position yourself incorrectly – see last part of the “human enemies” section from the video). However, I was never close to dying…
With these being said, my aim was simply to create a character around five things that are generally considered very bad in Grim Dawn and succeed with it:

(1) Vitality/Chaos damage – worst damage types in the entire game.
(2) Hybrid pet builds – considered at the bottom of the barrel…and for good reasons.
(3) Hungering Void – one of the worst devotions due to it basically cutting your HP regeneration.
(4) The Harbinger set – when was the last time you saw anyone using it ? Yeah… that’s what I thought.
(5) 2h rifle builds – same as point (2).

II. PROS / CONS and GENERAL PERFORMANCE

Blue = no procs;
Red = with procs.

RATINGS explanation:
(a) Single Target Damage.
(1) = less than 15k dps.
(5) = more than 150k dps.

(b) AoE Damage.
(1) = capable of doing 5k damage to an entire screen in less than 3 s;
(5) = capable of doing more than 40k damage to an entire screen in less than 3 s.

© Survivability:
(1) = no over capped resistances, less than 8k hp, less than 1500 DA, no circuit-breaker.
(5) = all resistances are over capped, more than 15k hp, 2500 DA+, more than 2 circuit-breakers.

(d) Mobility.
(1) – less than 110% run speed, no resistance to enemy CC, no gap-closer;
(5) – max run speed, more than 50% resistance to enemy CC (e.g. slow, freeze, petrify, sleep), a gap-closer ability than can be spammed.

(e) CC/Escape
(1) – no CC ability, no panic button,
(5) – multiple CC abilities that apply slow, freeze, terrify, petrify and confusion status to a large area, at least one panic button ability, a gap-closer than can be used to escape.

TOTAL: 19/25 (no procs); 23/25 (with procs).

PROS:
(1) HARDCORE ULTIMATE VIABLE: I finished the game and killed all nemeses with 0 DEATHS, didn’t I? Let me teach you the “Rule of Uroborook”: a dead man has no DPS. Contrary to what you might think, TOTAL DEATHS is one of the most important stats in this game.
(2) Huge single target damage: 99% of the game you will achieve 50k-60k dps easily without going overboard with TD. For Ultimate Nemeses and hard bosses (i.e. Mad Queen, Alkamos), we have the “Time Dilation – Doom Bolt Shotgun” strategy that puts even the famous Blademaster class to shame.
(3) Powerful AOE Primal Strike, Sigil + Falcon swoop deals easily with dense trash mob packs. Your pets will take care of the rest.
(4) NOT a potion addict Health and Elixir potions are tasty. I know that. However, I see a lot of builds promote potion addiction and that, for me at least, seems like a very, very bad idea (unless you are a commando, ofc). There’s only one case where you absolutely need to use elixir potions and sometimes a mana regeneration potion – more precisely, when dealing with nemeses during Time Dilation. As far as HP potions go I never used them in Elite and Ultimate. I can only imagine that if you do want to use them the game will become much easier.
(5) Versatile gameplay : You want to use pets while having an active role in destroying the aetherial menace ? – no problem, you can do that. You want to get rid of the pets – no problem again… pets suck badly vs Nemeses as you probably know by now.
(6) High survivability: The Harbinger proc + Time Dilation can provide you not only with insane damage output, but also with insane survivability. As a chronomancer you will be able to put 30 sigils on the ground while abusing Blood of Dreeg ad infinitum. Traversing the Immolation has never been easier (see video section).
(7) High mobility: Max run speed and immunity to all forms of enemy CC – enough said.
(8) 2 Circuit-breakers / Fail-safe mechanisms: You want to “facetank” enraged Shar’Zul even if you don’t need to? Do you fear Loxmere Nightmage? Your worst nightmare revolves around Fabius or the Mad Queen (ohh…scary) ? Fear not, my friend, the Harbinger Proc + Time Dilation will ensure you survive these encounters and get back on your feet at full health. The only thing you need to remember is the following: for the love of Empyrion… DO NOT use Blood of Dreeg or Sigil just before the procs (!!!)

CONS:
(1) High gear requirements: This is a G5 build (G8 actually). As such, in late ultimate you will need every legendary item listed here if you want to destroy all Nemeses in 8-10 seconds. Hardcore achievement is easier to get, ofc, because you know…Log is a joke and this character is partially a vitality caster.
(2) Not good for people with anxiety disorders: . For the procs to work you need to be low health (<50%). If you have a panic disorder or you sympathetic nervous system is hyperactive I suggest the following:
(a) take a capsule of Ativan (aka Lorazepam);
(b) equip an Avatar of Mercy or Mark of Divinity on your character when going against Ultimate Valdaran or Fabius for the first time.

III. Character Progression and Skills
Physique: 50
Cunning: 10
Spirit: 30

Put one point in physique and one in cunning until you reach 10 cunning. Afterwards put one point in spirit and one in physique until you reach 30 spirit. All points left should be put into physique.

OBS: if you find yourself taking too much damage or you don’t have powerful defensive gear, put your points into physique first until you reach about 40. Also put some points into the Sigil skill if you are new to the game.

Leveling:

LEVEL 0-30: Start with Shaman and use Primal Strike (with transmuter ofc). At lvl 10 take Occultist and try to rush Vulnerability and Blood of Dreeg (BoD).

LEVEL 30: http://grimcalc.com/build/kAWmw9u
LEVEL 40: http://grimcalc.com/build/7BCpdmH
LEVEL 50: http://grimcalc.com/build/D4QAvW2
LEVEL 60: http://grimcalc.com/build/KvCLD8d
LEVEL 70: http://grimcalc.com/build/BHcPb5A
LEVEL 80: http://grimcalc.com/build/W9uwqeR
LEVEL 85: http://grimcalc.com/build/1KIwkfW
(+ all skills from Hidden Path)

OBS:
(1) Get rid of the Familiar pet as soon as you can. Here I suggest lvl 70, because that’s when defensive faction augments become available to your character. I got rid of the raven a lot earlier, however.
(2) Ally with the Order of Death’s Vigil on Veteran + Elite and Kymon’s on Ultimate.
(3) Always ally with Anasteria (the Outcast) and do some grinding for the Black Legion in order to compensate.
(4) Rush your reputation with the Rovers…fast.
(5) Buy mandates and writs as soon as they become available to you.

III.2 Skills
Primal Strike – use it as LMB.
Devouring Swarm – use it as RMB.

1st Skillbar :
Curse of Frailty – always use it on large groups and bosses.
Doom Bolt - use it to snipe casters and high HP targets. During Time Dilation you will spam it.
Sigil of Consumption – use it on everything if you want to “facetank” and/or need to survive.
Bloody Pox with Fevered Rage – use it only after you have the Harbinger set and /or if your pets got sufficient aggro in order to speed up your clear time.
Blood of Dreeg – should ALWAYS be active as it gives you OA, psn %resistance, physical resistance (with AotG) and also applies to your pets.
Pet Attack – use it to reposition your pets.

2nd Skillbar
Here there will be only passive auras that you activate once per session and potions (DON’T use aether clusters – it is cheating).
Mogdogen’s Pact ;
Possession ;
Solael’s witchfire
Bonds of Bysmiel

IV. GEAR

ENDGAME
Head: Mask of the Harbinger – (7 pierce / 10 cold resistance). (Prismatic Diamond).
Amulet: The Peerless Eye of Beronath – (Breath of Life: 15 vitality + 5% hp). (Focusing Prism).
Ring 1: Signet of the Fallen – (Mogdrogen’s Sanctity: 12 Elemental resistance + 180 hp). (Ectoplasm).
Ring 2: Signet of the Damned - (Mogdrogen’s Sanctity: 12 Elemental resistance + 180 hp). (Ectoplasm).
Weapon 1: [Harbinger of Eternal Suffering](” https://gracefuldusk.appspot.com/items/8187-Harbinger-of-Eternal-Suffering ) – (Potent Essence of Ch’thon) (Mark of Dreeg).
Weapon 2: [Silverbolt](” https://gracefuldusk.appspot.com/items/8178-Silverbolt ). – (Potent Essence of Ch’thon) (Silvercore Bolts)
Shoulders: [Menacing Benn’Jahr Pauldrons of Potency](” https://gracefuldusk.appspot.com/items/8966-Benn’Jahr’s-Pauldrons ). (10 cold / 10 lightning) (Silk Swatch). – the “of Potency” suffix is essential here, not the prefix.
Hands: [Harbinger’s Grasp](” https://gracefuldusk.appspot.com/items/7929-Harbinger’s-Grasp ). – (7 pierce, 10 poison/acid). (Unholy inscription).
Feet: [Golemborn Greaves](” https://gracefuldusk.appspot.com/items/8011-Golemborn-Greaves ). – (10 pierce). (Mark of Mogdrogen).
Badge of Mastery: [Badge of mastery](” https://gracefuldusk.appspot.com/items/8362-Badge-of-Mastery ). (+5 to Devouring Swarm or +5 to Doom Bolt, preferably the last). (Ectoplasm or Attuned Lodestone). Go Ectoplasm ONLY IF you don’t have enough mana ofc…
Belt: [Girdle of Stolen Dreams](” https://gracefuldusk.appspot.com/items/8210-Girdle-of-Stolen-Dreams ). (10 cold / 10 lightning). (Antivenom salve).
Relic: [Primal Instinct](” https://gracefuldusk.appspot.com/items/3221-Blueprint%3A-Relic---Primal-Instinct ). / Solael’s Decimation (for nemeses and other special bosses)
Legs: [Fateweaver’s Leggings](” https://gracefuldusk.appspot.com/items/8226-Fateweaver’s-Leggings ). – (10 aether). (Silk Swatch).
Chest: [Vestments of Dreeg](” https://gracefuldusk.appspot.com/items/7998-Vestments-of-Dreeg ). – (7 pierce/ 10 cold). (Chains of Oleron).

Special gear for special occasions:
(1) Ultimate ACT IV + BoC: swap the Harbinger weapon for Silverbolt and activate the aura in order to maximize the damage output of your pets vs some bosses.
(2) Ultimate Nemeses: get rid of the pets and replace the belt with a Sash of The Bloodlord . Replace the relic with Solael’s Decimation or Oblivion . If you don’t do this you won’t be able to kill the nemeses in 8-9 seconds. Sometimes you might even want to drink a Royal Jelly essence if you’re playing HC.
(3) BoC and other places with high fire DoTs: replace the chest with Devil’s Cage Hauberk or drink a Flamedrinker potion vs mobs that deal high fire DoTs.

OBS: This build is sufficiently robust such that you can kill 98-99% of the content without the items listed above (which are not even BiS). For that 8-10 second nemeses kill performance, however, you absolutely NEED the following items: The Harbinger set (all 3 pieces), Golemborn Greaves, Girdle of Stolen Dreams, Fateweaver’s Leggings and a Solael’s Decimation or Oblivion Relic . You will also need some Benn’Jahr Pauldrons (Pauldrons NOT Shoulderguards) with the following suffix: “OF POTENCY”. Prefix is less important but it can be “demonic”, “dominator’s”, “menacing” or “stonehide”.

Gear while LEVELING – Ideal (not what you will actually have).
()LVL 25: Equip Squall as your relic. In terms of weapons, the Malady crossbow will be ideal here.
(
)LVL 35: Equip Savage as your relic and keep it until lvl 70. The storm hound is much more useful than the hellhound at this level.
()LVL range 50-60: Use Silverbolt as your main weapon and Voidmancer’s Cord as your belt. One of the rings should be Glyph of Kephat’Zoth. For amulet… use the Thread of Mortality or Avatar of Mercy .
(
)LVL range 60-70: Equip Witching Hour as your secondary weapon. For ch’thonic enemies you will use Silverbolt (with aura). Equip a Badge of Mastery with +5 to either Primal Strike or Devouring Swarm. +5 to Doom Bolt is also good allthough you won’t have enough mana to sustain it now. If you don’t have a BoM use a Black Star of Deceit. Also, use the Devil’s Cage Hauberk as your chest piece.
() LVL range 70-80: Take Primal Instinct as your primary relic. Oblivion or Solael’s Decimation should be your secondary relics vs nemeses that decimate your swarmlings (i.e. Valdaran, Moosilauke).
(
) LVL range 80-85: Use the Harbinger Set. Your belt should be Girdle of Stolen Dreams for 98-99% of the game. Swap that with Sash of the Bloodlord for the doom-shotgun strategy that you will use during Time Dilation.

VI. Boss Challenge
NEMESES

Benn’Jahr, The Colossal Noob – 2/10 = The easiest nemesis. It can be killed safely from a distance with pets or without.
Valdaran, The Storm Bastard – 3/10 = kite around a pillar and use sigil. If you don’t have the Harbinger set and/or enough mana do not engage him. Sometimes you will need a mana regeneration potion in order to kill him fast.
Fabius,”The Unseen” Goon – 2/10 = DO NOT use the Girdle of Stolen Dreams vs Fabius because you will burn all your mana vs his blade barrier. The trick to kill him reliably is to kite a bit until he pops his blade barrier. Afterwards, put sigils on him and let him hit you until the Harbinger + Time Dilation procs. Then you proceed to kick his ass. PLS understand that you need to have 80% bleed resist to kill him with no stress – the DoT will be covered by sigil + Blood of Dreeg but it will ignore the Harbinger proc. However…don’t panic (!!!) and watch my videos to see how I do it with 0 deaths.
Moosilauke, the Chill – 2/10 = Use pets for his first phase. Afterwards swap your belt + relic and kill him in 8 seconds.

SPECIAL BOSSES

Mad Queen – 2/10 = with pets alone you can kill her in around 30-40 seconds in one or two cycles. However, if you want to show off, you need the Harbinger set.

STEP 1: Use blood of dreeg when you enter the room (for psn resistance) but it should not be on cooldown once you engage her.
STEP 2: Put sigils on her to counter her bleed + poison DoTs.
STEP 3: facetank.
STEP 4: apply bloody pox + fevered rage.
STEP 5: use the Doom Bolt-Shotgun during Time Dilation.
STEP 6: collect loot.

OBS : for you to do it with no stress (i.e. 0 deaths or Hardcore Ultimate) I recommend you drink a Royal Jelly Essence + Balm before the fight. Also, watch the bottom of the screen because after the Habinger + Time Dilation procs go on cooldown you can die in exactly 3 hits to the queen (I haven’t, ofc, but I can’t guarantee that new players won’t because they haven’t killed this boss more than 200 times).

The Sentinel – 3/10 (Veteran + Elite) 5/10 (Ultimate) = the hardest boss for this build on Ultimate. My advice to you is to skip the Hidden Path quest on veteran and finish it on both difficulties when you are in late Elite and you have powerful gear equipped.

OBS: : If you play Hardcore I advice you to skip the Sentinel in Ultimate difficulty. 1 skill point is not worth it and there are far better builds for farming him if you want his legendries (which are also useless for this build btw) The boss fight got me close to death 2 times due to his insane DoTs + the legendary helm he will sometimes carry. APPROACH with CAUTION.

VII. FAQ
Q1: Can this build work for pyromancers and or/warlocks ?
A1: No. Pyromancers will not have enough mana to sustain it, nor enough vitality resistance debuffs to make full use of the Doom Bolt-Shotgun. The Primal Instinct relic will also be worse for them. If you go pyro you will need brimstone for AoE and 99% of the game and that means you will become point starved as the ability requires 50 points in the Demolitionist mastery.
A1.2: Warlocks can kill the Mad Queen safely in 3-5 seconds not as ranged/caster hybrids, but as pure casters. However, I can’t guarantee that a full caster warlock will not die in ultimate to other dangers. Even as such, this conjurer build revolves around the Harbinger set which is useless for Warlocks.

Q2: The Glyph of Kelphat’Zoth ring is trash…why do you use it in some of your videos ?
[b] A2: To show you that the build works even with suboptimal hybrid pet gear (which you will actually use if you have nothing better). When going nemesis hunting I suggest you use Signet of the Fallen as it gives you far better returns during Time Dilation.

Q3: Do you think Time Dilation needs a nerf ?
A3: No. First of all most classes can’t make full use of it due to the enormous mana costs involved in spamming abilities during the 8 sec time window. Take Shadow Strike for example… a Witch Hunter or Blademaster can’t exceed 3500 energy without putting too many points into Spirit and/or abusing Ectoplasm. During TD (Time Dilation) you will SS 10-15 times and you are basically over. Even at 100.000 damage / SS it will not be enough to kill a nemesis like Fabius in 8 seconds. Second of all, abilities like SS are influenced by Attack Speed and not Casting Speed when their cooldown is 0, so half of the proc is wasted. Third of all (and this is the most important thing actually), without the Harbinger set you are STILL VULNERABLE to enemy CC (like a stun from Valdaran or freeze from Moosilauke). You will be surprised to learn that your 8 sec apotheosis is essentially a 5-6 sec one due to status effects.

Q4: Do you like cheese?
A4: No, I don’t. However, since a lot of people run Tricksters, Wardens and poison Witch Hunters that exceed 200k DoTs (me included  ) I am happy to make a build that revolves around chaos and vitality - which are two of the worst damage types - and roll with it successfully.

Sir. Avatar of Dreeg, thank you for confirming that you are seriously obsessed with TD… :p:p

Anyway this is the most original build posted here since long time, and with this i have said it all.

This guide is setting new standards for all guides out there, especially with focus on end game content. Huge kudos!

Simply amazing. A spider chart, prescription drug recommendation and a unique, effective build and fantastically detailed guide using some of the most scorned elements of the game. 10/10 would read again.

Two specific questions:

  1. Is there a way visually to determine when TD procs/is on cooldown? I’ve played around with it a bit and have yet to pick up any visual clues so I end up staring at my health bar trying to determine if I’ve dipped below 50%.

  2. With respect to a Warlock, it looked like that forum poster who killed the Queen in 3 seconds used doom bolt spam and continuous mirror reflecting her damage spikes to accomplish the kill–is there a better caster/hybrid use of TD to achieve those lol kill times?

That’s because I am a psychiatrist. I feared some ppl might not appreciate my humor.

To answer your questions:

  1. Generally speaking - NO. However, for this particular build you have +20% cooldown reduction that applies to Time Dilation. Because of this Time Dilation and the Harbinger proc are synchronised such that I always know when it will be up because I have the Harbinger icon.

  2. Full caster Warlock is the fastest:
    a) it has the highest inherent spirit stat due to both the arcanist and the occultist masteries being esentially caster classes.
    b) it can spam everything without the energy bar moving (IEE).
    c) can make use of Fevered Rage + mirror.

In that 3 sec video you saw, Doom Bolt did actually very little damage. What kills the Mad Queen is devastation + damage reflected back at her + fevered rage + hundred of Flame Torrents that cycle the character (and FT is assigned to Devastation, btw). I am not entirely sure that the FT part is not a bug because you can do the same with hundereds of Dreeg’s Eyes.

Dear friend, can you explain the part about Flame Torrent / Dreeg’s Eyes with a little more detail?

Oh, very cool. I have the Harbinger crossbow but not the other two pieces or I’d be sorely tempted to get rolling on your build.

TIL. The creativity of the people here never ceases to amaze. Thanks for answering my q’s and for sharing this super cool build.

As an aside, I keep staring at the Hood of Dreeg and thinking it has possibilities as part of a TD centric build, but the 30% trigger is pretty low for comfort, might have to switch to Ketamine to sufficiently calm the nerves.

I have another version of this build. Check it out guys

Yes, well it seems that there is some strange behaviour when you put devastation to trigger things like Dreeg’s Eyes from the Guardian constellation during Time Dilation. When you cast it, any active skill is able to trigger the constellation proc including the constellation proc itself (providing it exists for sufficient time like Flame Torrent and Dreeg’s eyes).

Wow… This definitively is a bug. I don’t like abusing these things since the fix will come sooner or later (and i fell like cheating). Not that TD will last much longer in its current state, with all these boss-trashing build coming out…

Wow, amazing guide…hats off.

The build is original, i like it. But TD will be either reversed or reworked IMO…

I posted this build at the request of some people on this forum and made everyone fully aware of the fact that I might have to close this thread in 1-2 months.

If you want to skip trash mobs the savagery variant and more points in Doom Bolt and swarm will generate even more dps. I tested this core build in every possible way since 17.06. and decided to present it with Primal Strike instead of savegry (and no pets) due to the lack of AoE. I will include another section for those who want even higher single target dps in which I will present all possible variations.

Thing is the community wanted Aeon’s Hourglass to be changed. Polls were taken and the Hourglass was generally considered the worst devotion. It made warlocks and conjurers capable of killing nemeses just as fast as blademasters, witch hunters and spellbreakers (they were always strong  ). Also, Crate approached the problem like everyone wanted to: small nerfs to what was considered OP (except static strike - i don’t get that), big buffs to what was considered UP.

well written guide.

although i dont agree that TD is balanced in it’s current state. despite full casters being underpowered, TD in this state isn’t the right fix.

cool build nonetheless.

i don’t think crate will allow TD to stay this way much longer tho. they don’t like letting a single mechanic dominate builds/bosses - like the no CD procs that people were using to kill mogdrogen. blademasters remain op for so long due to soldier tree being all around strong rather than a single op mechanic

Yeah, you are probably right about that and I tend to change my mind about this issue depending on what I am focusing on. Full casters were so bad before 1.0.0.4. that I leveled exactly 0 to 85. Except for cool lightning effects there were 0 reasons to pursue one… “glass cannon” archetype was the idea - but it was just “glass” and no cannons.

I don’t get you guys… Old BMs were playing as a max lvl, well planned, full of BiS items char should. At that point in the game you will eventually “park” the toon and start something else anyway.

I’m of the idea that the devs should have focused more on bringing some of the worst builds to the BM level of efficiency, not the contrary.

ya , aether ray / doombolt supposed to be ultimate high dps nukes cept they are terrible.

old aggrivix made casters good for a while but it was short lived. cuz like i say crate hates having one mechanic dominate builds, and they aren’t wrong. aggrivix still a strong item right now, we just need more things like that for casters. many small, non-OP advantage add up to make a good build. very much like blademasters in their current state.

Why Falcon Swoop procs 100% of the time with Doom Bolt? Is this a bug or it is supposed to be so?

It is not a bug, it is intended that way.
1.0.0.3. introduced dynamic proc chances such that the higher the intrinsic cooldown of a skill is, the higher the chances are for that skill to trigger a devotion.
1.0.0.4. introduced Time Dilation - a devotion that makes all cooldown on other devotions zero for 8 seconds (at max level).

Due to these changes (which were actualy necessary in order to make caster characters “competitive” without changing the skills such that they scale with weapon damage) you can have things like shotgun-doom bolt or shotgun-phantasmal blades for a very short period of time (i.e. 8 sec).
