[1.0.0.6] Infernal Tremors build showcase [Pyromancer]

Current update status: 1.009
Quite a few nerfs since 1.007, both to demolitionist mastery (more cost to flashbang, BWC less potent and reliable, more cd on Blastshield, bit less rr on mines) and the gear used here (IK set and amulet). Still more than capable of clearing the campaign with rogue-likes and nemeses (although I don’t bother grinding rep for the faction choice nemeses so can’t really say for maiden w/o crucible buffs).

Crucible is still possible, but getting Maiden + Fabius is now quite the ordeal and adding another nemesis that will force a melee fight will definitely result in a failure. Sharzul, Mad Queen, Hidden Path bosses and Anasteria are also annoying but should never result in a fail with proper kiting when needed, the rest just melts.

Added a couple videos. MoD proc in both but cba to take more than 1 shot unless it’s a catastrophic fail now, could have been avoided with a simple healing potion.
No real need to update character sheet screens, just some more hp, bit more OA, less crit damage and maybe some other minor stuff.

Gameplay videos:

  • Mad Queen in 1.009: https://youtu.be/hR2SKOrvVDM using Obsidian Tremor on her revenge aura is suicide, just take it slow and as safely as possible.
  • Fabius in 1.009: https://youtu.be/gJon89R0gV8 runs out of energy if not using trash mobs to your advantage like in the 1.007 video. MoD proc could have been avoided with a potion, unneeded vast majority of the time.
  • Fabius in 1.0.0.7.H1: https://youtu.be/TOVce9EVXtw Standing in flame patches to refill energy, which also reduces my damage. Didn’t pay attention to cooldowns at all here, terribly played but still works even if slow.
  • Gladiator wave 150.33 clear in 1.0.0.6: https://youtu.be/fMEAlgTBJgQ (Valdaran is already dead and I’m playing like a wuss to avoid an embarrassing death even though it’s not really needed for Moose) Forgot to show the gear, skills and devotions that were used, here they are: https://youtu.be/txRfoChGXck

Concept
Caster build using Obsidian Tremor (granted skill from the Obsidian Juggernaut) as main damage skill supplemented by transmuted Blackwater Cocktail. Majority Chaos and Fire damage with a bit of physical.

Pros:

  • Decent damage (Obsidian Tremor has ~15k listed dps that you can multiply by 3 in melee range where all 3 projectiles will hit) with up to 84% resistance reduction on the main damage type.

  • Huge range and AoE for the Tremor projectiles even if damage falls off from the projectiles splitting, as well as huge AoE from BWC and all the procs.

  • Up to 150% Weapon Damage on the main attack skill allows to make nice use of flat damage bonuses and Attack Damage Converted To Health (ADCTH) that casters usually can’t benefit that much from.

  • High frequency of hits allows for procs to occur very frequently.

  • High staying power with Blast Shield + Searing light, 400 to 1000+ hp regen, 18% ADCTH, 34% physical resistance with the others capped and a circuit breaker.

Cons:

  • Extreme energy management issues. No amount of energy regen will allow us to keep spamming so we have to rely on energy absorption, which will leave us with only BWC, procs and weapon attack in places where it’s not possible to rely on it. Still enough to fight Fabius if you have Benny Hill music in the background in case you fail to use arsonists to your advantage.

  • Very gear dependent. Main attack skill can only be used if the player has access to a specific legendary item and to make most use of the build you also need one of the recently released legendary sets.

  • The projectiles from Obsidian Tremor can’t hit stuff that are on higher terrain, negating the range advantage of the skill and forcing the player to reposition. :furious:

Skills
Grimcalc with no + skills: http://grimcalc.com/build/1008-xS2Caq

Damage:

  • Obsidian Tremor: relatively high damaging spammable skill with high hit frequency and high %weapon damage in melee range Shoots 3 projectiles that cover a huge range. The core of the build. Flame Torrent is bound to this skill. (granted skill)

  • Blackwater Cocktail: Good AoE skill with decent damage. Also provides resistance reduction and defense in the form of reduced enemy physical damage and a very significant OA nuke. Eldritch Flame is bound to this skill. (12+9/12; 1+8/12; 12+2/12; transmuter 1/1)

Utility/Defense:

  • Flashbang: CC skill with huge AoE and significant DA nuke. Also makes enemies fumble thanks to it modifier (10+2/12; 1+2/12)

  • Blast Shield: 3 seconds of Godmode on 12 seconds recharge. Very powerful automatic defensive skill. (10+2/12)

  • Thermite Mine: Provides a significant resistance reduction to foes caught inside. Very cumbersome skill to use, it’s possible to cast the skill 2-3 times on an enemy with a small hitbox and still not have it affected… (1+9/16; 1+8/12)

  • Curse of frailty: Resistance reduction to fire and some minor cc. (3+2/10; 8+2/10)

  • Blood of Dreeg: healing + massive OA bonus, as well as some physical resist. (16+2/16; 10+2/12)

  • Solael’s Flame: Resistance reduction and minor damage. (granted skill)

Toggle Buffs:

  • Flame Touched: Offense buff that boosts OA and offers flat + % damage, as well as some minor armor. (12+5/12; 1+5/12)

  • Vindicative Flame: Offers total speed as well as some hp regen and minor defensive cc that is useful to trigger procs in energy starvation mode. (9+2/16; 0/12)

  • Solael’s Witchfire: Adds flat damage, caps vitality resist, and converts a part of the physical damage to chaos. (1+5/12; 1+2/12; transmuter 3/3)

  • Possession: Damage absorption, flat and % damage, resistance to skill disruption, chaos resist. Very solid exclusive skill now that it doesn’t destroy energy regeneration. (10+2/12)

Devotions
Targets were Tree for sustain, Solael’s Witchblade for -% chaos & fire resists, and Fiend for a powerful damage proc. We manage to get those three along with tons of HP nodes and crit bonuses, such as Giant’s Blood and Kraken.

Grimcalc with +skills and recommended devotions

Devotion path

  1. Red crossroad
  2. complete Fiend, bind the skill to (Greater) Fireblast from the weapon upgrades, and ultimately to Obsidian Tremor
  3. remove red Xroad
  4. complete Hawk
  5. Complete Viper
  6. Complete Solael’s Witchblade, bind the skill to Canister Bomb, and ultimately to BWC.
7-8. Complete Eel and Sailor’s Guide in any order you want
  7. Complete Solemn Watcher
10-11-12-13. Complete Panther, Lion, blue and yellow Xroad in any order you want
  8. 5 points in Tree of Life, leaving out the 4% hp node. Bind the skill to any toggle buff, such as Possession
  9. 3 points into Behemoth in order to acquire Giant’s Blood proc, bind the skill to any toggle buff such as Flame Touched
  10. 3 points at the base of Obelisk of Menhir
  11. 1 point in Scales of Ulcama

Progression and Gameplay
Character attributes
Everything can go into Physique.
If you want to allocate points into spirit, be aware that you will still need 970 points into physique to use the Legplates of Valor.

Faction Choice:
Order of Death’s Vigil sells the +10% Vitality resist augment we need to cap our resists.

Leveling:
Since this is an old character that was originally built around the Harbinger set, there’s no detailed leveling guide :o

I’d suggest leveling with (Greater) Fireblast and rush Canister Bomb at the start, then add BWC later on.

At level 58, you can possibly equip Obsidian Juggernaut and some of the lvl 50 chaos/physical legendaries along with as much energy management as you can, wouldn’t recommend until you complete Tree of Life though…

In Closing
More fun with Obsidian Tremor! Probably a lot can be improved since it was only meant to be a proof of concept using an old character. Here’s another build using Obsidian Tremor as main skill: Aether Warlock version
Feel free to provide feedback and ask questions.

I thought the granted skill was linked to cast speed like forcewave? Having points in witchfire seems a bit questionable if that’s the case. The flat damage is fine but I always pick this skill for the speed first, damage a distant second.

Yes, Obsidian Tremor does scales with casting speed which is why I use Spellwoven threads instead of consecrated wrappings on the arms. Solael’s Witchfire was used solely for the flat damage but I agree with you that spending more than one point on the skill isn’t really worth it. Keeping the skill is important however because it benefits from quite a few +skills and is a prerequisite for Consecrated Blade that is just too good to pass up.

I also realized from the gear showcase small video that I had forgotten to use an armor augment on the arms, so it’s possible to drop Second Rite entirely with good enough vitality resist rolls on the rings, but since it isn’t the case for me I’ll keep that one point.

We can use the skill points on CoF because it scales more than the mines and is much more reliable.

Updated the OP a bit.

I’m going to try this. Haven’t really found a good use for this set, it’s annoying that it boosts two skills that are very expensive skill point wise. I think I might try a version of this without mines and demo mastery to 40. Can always change it later this way.

Yes, mines are only really useful for bosses anyway, and with 50/50 I can’t put points into the skills. If this wasn’t a recycled character I would also have first tried to stop at Agonizing Flames, but still put 1 point in the mine without modifier to get some -% fire resist thanks to the skill bonuses.

The other possibility would have been a Sorcerer along those lines: https://grimcalc.com/build/1006-6YaEQI
This Pyromancer build was actually only meant to be a prototype for the sorcerer because I anticipated the energy issues would be too hard to solve going Pyro, but seeing how well it performed…

Energy is still a huge issue outside of the crucible where everything is just a friendly battery pack/punching bag outside of a few waves. I wasn’t unlucky and didn’t draw that, but I imagine getting a combination of only Maiden and Fabius on waves 120 and 150 would be a defeat by default due to lack of energy.

The BoC runs I had to do to get devotions to an acceptable level before trying the crucible went alright because almost everything is kind enough to fill our energy (except Sharzul that took ages), but be prepared to have to kill trash with BWC and keep Tremor for heroes in some other places…

Don’t know that sorcerer helps much. Yes you get a bit more regen but - skill energy cost doesn’t work on granted skills I think.

Reduced energy cost does work on granted skills, or at the very least it does work on Obsidian Tremor. On this build, I can consistently cast the skill 34 times before running out of energy, if I remove the amulet with the Focusing Prism it goes down to 30.

Could you update this when the new patch comes out? I am interested in making this

I was already planning to, same with the aether version
Seeing the patch preview changes, it would mostly be plenty of buffs. I’ll make sure to make the OP more detailed like I did with the aether version.

Then onto a Winter King’s Might build after that, hopefully I can get it to work as fine as I could with Obsidian Tremor.

If might of the winter king didn’t need 2hande weapon and be converted with Warpfire that thing would be so powerful. The Elsa build Jajaja made shows it’s power with both Winter king sword and Arc blade. It is strong but imagine with conversion:rolleyes:

Yeah, I already did some initial planning and cold damage feels really hard to work with, or at least it does compared to chaos. Not to mention that skill locks the head slot as well as both hands…

For now, my plan is to make a spellbreaker variation using Night’s Embrace, OFF, and fiend as the proc on the shotgun skill since Falcon Swoop was gutted since Jajaja designed his winter king builds. We’ll see how it goes, hopefully perma-freeze is enough to cover for the very low defenses I’m anticipating…

just to show for fun how hard cold damage is to work with. On a spellbreaker I reworked to have full DM and the new improved Alkamos set I replaced a DM weapon with a 95% conversion (lucky me) Warpfire…to my surprise damage was almost the same, jsut a bit lower…without % fire damage from devotions just warpfire and only elemental storm which i already had so no Solael. No changes for it just a simple warpfire switch and no OFF at all. It’s silly, without pierce involved it would be really bad

Well so much for me bragging about my 95% cold conversion warpfire. It took a heavy nerf. No longer considering it for Saboteur or other gimmick builds I was doing.

Yeah that’s literally the only nerf that doesn’t make any sense to me.

Oh gosh… Yeah, it’s sad. I did think Warpfire was in need of adjusting, but only the resistance reduction that barely got touched and maybe the cast speed…

Damage conversion is one of the most interesting mechanics of the game. If it was because of OFF, they should just have lowered the resistance reduction on that skill more :frowning:

Holy heck… Now that’s some “increased damage on granted skill” alright, for the record it was just barely above 10k before.

Imgur

Definitely gonna revisit this build and update the OP after I’ve tested all I want to

edit: so that display was changed with the patch so it’s no use comparing the old value, damage per hit on page II went up by 22% so that number should be more accurate. Still very nice, updated the OP a bit.

How is this build is doing due to certain changes to elixir of spirit cd?

Testing right now in Valbury. The change is irrelevant when you get hit by lots of spells, but it’s twice as boring when you aren’t… But nothing BWC and just whacking the hammer for 13.5k dps + some occasionnal Tremor and flashbang can’t solve in the campaugn at least. Still need to test in crucible but there’s still bajillions of stuff I want to test and only so much time for now.

Who thought the aetherial terraformer boss in front of the gate was a good idea…

I am only interested in the main campaign’s performance. Thanks Sobertooth. After i returned i planned to polish my remaining two builds (or was it three:confused:)and then start this one, I even had a spare level 30 Pyromancer in store for just in case scenarios like this.

On the plus side, damage feels much better now. Survivability went up too since the way they buffed Obsidian Tremor was to make each hit 50% weapon damage instead of 36%, so more ADCTH. Might even consider Kymon’s Will if I find a way to patch aether resist.

Nerfs to Tree and Giant procs don’t seem relevant at least in the campaign, still a bit over 1k/sec hp regen with both procs on.

Valbury is ok energy-wise. Annoying reflect crystals actually work like energy packs and the bosses that aren’t that stupid gate keeper die without having to wait on the cd of energy pots. Can face tank the whole flames part, only dangerous stuff is resistance reduction from the mobs if completely overwhelmed (and even then it’s not an issue because of blastshield + MoD and all the AoE damage), and the boss because of the cc + rr so need to be a little careful.

Added video from first Fabius encounter in 1.0.07.H1 with terrible gameplay such as forgetting to use BWC for half the fight… I guess at least it shows that the build can function even at reduced efficiency and played terribly. All planned content added to the OP. Merry Xmas
