You can buy back devotion points.

For example, to get to Viper say you put 1 point in red crossroads.

Then you complete Viper and get 2 red points for completing it. You can buy back the point in red crossroad now, from the spirit guide. Viper would sustain itself in this case.

Maybe that is why you are lacking 3 points? because you have some you can buy back.
