Added weapon damage and conversion while dual wielding

hey guys,

i have a fiew questions related to a build and i can’t seem to find the answer elsewhere so please bear with me if it has already been answered.

i’m playing an cabalist (Occultist/ necromancer) with dreegs evil eye as my main skill and im dual wielding.

through my gear dreegs evil eye is altered by this:
+48% weapon damage
100% conversion of physical dmg to acid

  1. how does added weapon damage work on a skill when im dual wielding? is the damage of bot weapons added?
  2. the base dmg of the weapons is physical. will this damage be acid because of the conversion?
  3. will a devotion proc like maul with its added phys dmg also be converted to acid dmg and will the attack dmg converted to healt based on this converted dmg?
  4. and while we are speaking about maul: how does this skill actually work? i’ not sure if i really understand it…while the proc is active for 5 sec everything that comes in range of 4.5 meters will get dmg (initially physical and maybe now acid because of the conversion?). is it just one time dmg to one enemy or does it work like a DoT? also can it proc again during these 5 seconds?

thank u all for ur input

this depends on the skill itself, in general, unless it’s a true dual wield skill (shadow strike as example) then skills only scale with 1h when dual wielding, primarily main hand weapon.
DEE happens to be “special” and has specific relation to hand/weapon interaction, so 60% of the time it will use your main hand, the other 40% you get left hand weapon base dmg DEE, PRM and some devotion skills do not count in off-hand / left-hand weapon damage

yes, conversion is conversion is always applied where it’s used, so if the skill has wd, part of your skill is phys, you have phys conversion, that’s converted just the same.

that depends if it’s global of direct skill conversion; devos are unaffected in terms of scaling or conversion to the skill it’s attached to, it’s merely a trigger.
If it’s global conversion it will apply to maul, if it’s direct skill(dee conversion) it will not

maul proc causes an aoe/“explosion” to happen around player, anything hit by that aoe gets a debuff dot attached to them. It’s the debuff pseudo dot dmg ticking that heals you (and it being a debuff is why it doesn’t stack on same target), the debuff and pseudo dot then is what lasts 5secs

amazing how fast my questions are being answered. thanks again gnomisch.

since u seem really knowledgeable with grim dawn maybe we could discuss some options for my build if u are interested :).

first idea:

  • more weapon dmg added due to higher base dmg of the second corruptian (and some other added flat dmg)
  • a bit of a waste because the is no value in 200% conversion in this case

second idea:
using a runed dagger of dreeg instead of one corruptian. and maybe also change my headgear to the “of dreeg” thing to get the last set bonus

my head is not able to compare these options :stuck_out_tongue:

well, first off, you can’t really use corruptian “well” the way you’re doing there.
You have basically no phys dmg, so it’s entirely pointless to even try go RE there
Corruptian RE is already a bit of a meme, so it requires full dedication as a phys build, you’re an acid build, so phys RE doesn’t have a place there/“you can’t halfass a phys meme it doesn’t work decently enough and gets wasted”.
Other issue is that in a couple of weeks the build straight up doesnt’ exist, Corruptian is getting changed in 1.2.1.3

so in either case you should be ditching corruptian/RE since it just doesnt’ work on an Acid/Poison build

So you need to decide if you’re going to go poison RE, or no RE at all, which would then influence your weapons differently, both for dmg type, but also pre-emptively since Corruptian is getting killed next patch.

then you can also secondarily consider if you want to use full class synergy directly better, or if you still want to go acid/poison cabalist (there is support for poison RE even if you dont’ want to do vitality)

today i learned…

thank u for all the information and hints. i’ll stick to the poison idea and already played around a bit with items.
if u are interested have a look:

if not just feel appreciated for ur effort

i can’t speak to the “effectiveness” of going mix DEE RE or dual wield dee/re like this, i don’t see anything directly wrong/conflicting aside from minor stuff like stat attention, less necessary devos or few skill points.
Ex, Spectral Wrath does very little for you as you have 0 vitality dmg, 0 phys and no meaningful aether dmg to speak of. So those points could potentially be shuffled
Maxing Curse of Frailty doesn’t do much past softcap when you’re again not a phys or bleeding build, aoe/duration effectively breakpoints at softcap/10pts
Stats wise, depending on the content you’re aiming for, more DA, more OA, bit more amor absorb, and cast speed since it’s a direct scaling to spam DEE.
Devos, personally i don’t like unnecessary spent points or over affinity unutilized, ex

frees up 6pts, since you don’t need the 3 in crossroad at a base interaction, nor the hammer constellation. Those points can then be either directly reinvested into more desired stuff, or used to additional reshuffle the overall star map.
One thing to note is that your current setup really only has 3 triggers/attack skills, 4 if we include a potential rune tho those aren’t always as awesome to use to trigger devos. But, you have 5 attack devo triggers needed, which means you either have too many triggers needed or too few abvailable in your setup (and to fulfill the devo triggers = more piano build)

cool that u took some time to have a look at my build.

i agree with ur reasoning regarding spectral wrath. after replacing the corruptian and therefore eliminating the physical dmg of the build there is no reason to have it.
im not sure if i understand the term “softcap”. do u mean investing just one point to be able to activate “vulnerability”? would make sense since the phys res reduction in curse of frailty is not needed anymore. do u have an opinion on the mov speed reduction it applies? is it worth?
also im not sure where i should use my remaining skill points. siphon souls is out of the question since it’s no meele build. and sigil of consumption is just not my style…some crappy sigil on the ground which can be easily evaded (maybe it is viable for a meele build by placing it right in front of me?!). which leaves me with ill omen and doom bolt and i think i would rather take ill omen because of its safety measures and focus on using DEE for dmg. but i haven’t used any of these skills yet so i would be interested in ur opinion.
after updating everything (skills & devos) im left with 4 skillpoints…any suggestions how to spend them wisely?

and finally:
can u give me a bit of guidance ragarding the needed values of DA and OA for specific content. i never thouight about that and just created builds which seemed to be interesting and fun. i once looked up the max DA and OA values of bosses but thats it…

EDIT:
not sure if i understand Ill Oment correctly…might also be a skill with me at its center. if so i would go for doom bolt :stuck_out_tongue:

softcap = initial max
hardcap = max limit above softcap
in GD hardcap is always softcap+10, softcap can then vary,
in this case Curse of Frailty has a initial display “max” of 10, so CoF softcap is 10. After this point, for this specific skill it starts scaling poorly per point when all we desire is the radius and duration.
Imo the slow is not a consideration, it will be to some players tho. For my own preferences i look at RR mainly, then duration/aoe secondly. As this is then neither a phys or bleed build my perspective becomes just the aoe and duration for uptime of debuff/need to recast, which then “stops” fully at decent scaling at 10pts. - can be argued whether it’s even worth to go full 10pts or breakpoint it earlier, but since the build does have the points to softcap it might aswell imo

siphon souls it not a melee build skill, it has decent aoe reach, and in either case enemies will close in on you
GD simulator

for me the question when i look at my char would be if i get enough points to invest in Siphon to make it useable, and if i want to weave in another button press.
When i looked at your Cabalist and fiddled with it i didn’t take Siphon because of the above 2 considerations. - doesn’t mean it can’t, just that for me it wasn’t a preference there.

same as siphon paragraph

you already have DR covered on RE, tho Omen will spread it wider

Unless the trigger is needed for devo my perspective would be it doesn’t get enough investment to be decent/worthwhile, but that’s my own view and it doesn’t always have to be directly “technically” about the efficiency ofc when we pick a skill, sometimes it’s just fun to zap stuff.

for endgame content, SR 75/76, but not Celestials, around 3000 OA to ensure hit rating and some slight critability, “more is better”. DA will vary more build to build, current meta has shifted to around 27-2800-3000, but it’s going to depend on other things available like shredding enemy OA or having DA procs (arcane will in arcanist/chariot devo) etc.
since you have a tiny bit of OA shred, and Possession absorb, i’d say initial floor to try out/“feel the waters” and aim for would be 2600-2700DA here.
If you aim for harder content, SR 85+, Ravager/Calla superbooses, it’s possible you’ll want to increase DA even more or OA shred even more to feel comfy (even on softcore)

it’s a plague debuff, you apply it to an enemy near cursor (has some reach so doesn’t have to be exact on cursor), and then auto spreads to nearby enemies every 0.7seconds or so

for me i’d start with just 1-1 Witchfire and second rite then go from there
def get more points in Curse tho so you don’t have to recast it as often, and it covers the screen better on each cast, eg softcap talk earlier.

since i haven’t played this, i’ve no clue how sustain will be/feel in the end, so uncertain how helpful siphon or sigil would be. But, looking at sheet i think it might be fine, ie lifesteal from siphon/sigil probably isn’t necessary or needed “enough” to add extra piano button. It is however something you might want to keep in mind tho.
Sometimes dying isn’t just because of lacking defences but not having high enough sustain to heal fast enough back up.
When i mess around with it i land on more points in Witchfire/Second Rite. Currently the crit scaling isn’t as worth for you since just 2800 OA, but it might be with more OA; but atleast it’s adding dmg* and vit res which is “low” enough to be ok for some points potentially(depending on item/comp/aug shuffling etc). And depending on how desperate we are for DA even if it’s low scaled Witchfire 9da/point might be “ok” even if seemingly expensive, and flat chaos is converted*

*was, when setup had more WD - tho on 1.2.1.3 update DEE gets natively some WD from Blood Burst, so might be okay there.

I don’t hate the idea of using omen, i just often set up more for “1v1” boss fight considerations, in which case omen DR gets more wasted since RE covers that. Omen spreading dmg reduct across the screen will be useful in aoe fights or ex SR chunks tho. So it can be more of a coin toss if you want omen for “just that”/“perfect for this purpose” or something else.
After Mark of Torment got changed i have to admit i look it much more with nose wrinkled and a scoffing attitude. Sometimes i don’t even invest in it at all anymore. 11pts then, for me, seems exuberantly high, if you/a player however find either comfort or actual great use in MoT i see nothing wrong with that, since we can use skills/effects differently in play. But might be something to take note of how much you use MoT/what degree of effect you use it to, if those extra couple points are being worth there.

**devo note, now that your setup no longer has high WD, until update 1.2.1.3 where Blood Burst changes, you wont be able to benefit from global/passive lifestel stat the same. As such Fox devo might be a bit wasted here, atleast until then/that patch update
You’re also take the “wrong” single node in Lotus, the great part is the phys res and heal increase, the energy regen is, more easily replaceable

i start my post again with a big THANK U for all the explanation.
after considering all the pros and cons i followed ur argugemts regarding CoF and went for the softcap. and since i need another button for my build to be able to use all the devos i will go for a maxed out syphon souls. i like the extra life steal. so no doom bolt and no ill omen. also by following ur arguments i will leave out mark of torment and invest the remaining points in witchfire & second rite. mainly because i dont want another button to press.

regarding the OA and DA values: it sounds cool to have 3k OA but it also feels like a massive stretch to get there if i dont want to dangerously reduce my res or to have less armor absorb. as an alternative i maybe could look for some other items with more OA/DA on them but this would reduce the dmg output considerably i think

what does actually change in blood burst with 1.2.1.3? atm it has WD on it - therefore global life steal should work with it. or do i misunderstand something?

can u give me the link where i can have a look at the upcoming changes in grim dawn? when i search for it i find the technical updates but not the stuff about skills and items 0o

EDIT:
adding up all the extra casting speed (50%) im curious if i will be able to sustain constant DEE casting. and before any of this can be tested i firt need 2 legandary rings of shuroth. 0o
grinding session incoming

Just look at the pinned threads of the public test discussion section
