Adjacent connectivity

Let there be roads coming from the edge of the map, 1 per side. Each you connect to gives a +10% chance for one extra merchant (1 at 40% for all 4, not 4 at 10%) and +% immigration.

To avoid building just any random piece of road connected to them counting for the bonus, the best measure I can think of is that the road has to continuously connect back to the town center or trading center.

I wholeheartedly agree that it would be a good idea for the game to reward the player for connecting his town to the wider world.

Maybe a way of doing so would be for the map to feature a few designated ‘entry points’ - these would be recognisable by a bit of road originating outside of the map - when merchants then arrive on the map they arrive by these points, with a fixed number of days before they begin their return-journey. So connecting these entry-points to the trade station would mean that the merchants got there sooner, and subsequently had more days ‘to spare’ before returning home, allowing the player a longer period of access to the merchant.
