Availability of minable coal

In the maps I have played there has been an aboundance of iron ore but virtually no coal in the ground. In the map I am currently playing I have so far found 1 coal mine in the entire map, and I am playing the vast size map. I know you can produce coal in a building, but it would be nice with a bit more coal in the ground that can be mined.

I suspect the relative lack of Coal is part of Game Balance - you have an on-map alternative in the Charcoal Burners, whereas you have no alternative to Iron Ore except the highly unreliable Trading Post.

The game is obviously designed to keep you sweating for enough resources to maintain a High Tier, High Population settlement, and the Coal, Iron, Sand, Clay minable resources appear to be prime examples of this: you have an alternative to Coal, so actual Coal will be relatively rare. And I’ve found very few maps that don’t have a real shortage of at least one of the other resources, or the resources are 'way off at the edge of a Large Map so the oxcarts take almost an entire season to haul the resource back to town . . .
