Azor Ahai, Prince of Fire and Ice

Azor Ahai, Prince of Fire and Ice

Concept

This is a Sorcerer build that wields the elemental powers of fire and ice to burn and rain destruction upon its enemies. Ice is used to freeze and massively debuff enemies, while fire is the main destructive force of the build.

This build can stack massive amounts of Fire Resistance debuff. Olexra’s Flash Freeze provides up to -166% Fire Resistance over a massive AOE at 22/12 rank. That alone is more resistance debuff that most other builds have in total. Blackwater Cocktail, Thermite Mines, Eldritch Fire, give us another -95% Fire Resistance, and Viper multiplies that by another 20%. With a huge total reduced Fire Resistance on enemies, we can deal highly amplified fire damage from Callidor’s Tempest, Blackwater Cocktail, and Devastation. All combined, we can apply something like -300% Fire Resistance, depending on how much is multiplied by Viper.

OFF’s weakness is that most heroes and bosses are immune to its freeze and therefore its debuff. While our other skills and devotions provide plenty of resistance reduction on their own, what if we could apply OFF to bosses as well? There is actually a way to make heroes vulnerable to OFF: with a rare debuff called Freeze Resistance reduction, provided by the Night’s Embrace amulet. This allows us to apply -50% Freeze Resistance reduction, which makes many heroes vulnerable to OFF and therefore its debuff, opening them up to our fire-based damaging skills.

Video

Here’s a video of Mad Queen on Ultimate. With our Freeze Resistance reduction active, we can actually chain freeze her while raining down Devastation and devotion procs, killing her in about 12 seconds here, with her barely touching our HP pool.

Baseline starter build
This is a baseline build to aim for, without any +skills from gear. It is the starting point for a functional build without endgame gear. As you get more +skills, move points around according the the skill guide below.

Commentary:

We want to max and overlevel OFF, max Agonizing Flames and Thermite Mines for Fire resist reduction. Devastation is our main hero killer and we want to overlevel that as much as we can. Callidor’s Tempest provides spammable AOE fire damage, which is quite helpful for sustained damage on top of Devastation and between cooldowns. Blackwater Cocktail also adds Fire damage and reduces incoming damage from enemies. An alternative build puts more points into BWC without High Potency and uses that as the main spammable attack. This is quite viable, especially before a lot of +skills are available.

The rest of the skills are fairly standard. Blast Shield provides a lot of survivability, Flame Touched for OA, flat fire damage, and +% fire damage; Vindictive Flame for the total speed; Canister Bomb to proc devotions and stun; and Maiven’s and Mirror for damage mitigation.

Skills to overlevel:

Olexra’s Flash Freeze
Devastation
Flame Touched
Callidor’s Tempest (if used as main attack)
Blackwater Cocktail (if used as main attack)

Skills to keep at specific level:

Inner Focus - 12 points
Maiven’s Sphere - 12 points
Blackwater Cocktail - 12 points, if used with High Potency
Blast Shield - 12 points
Vindictive Flame - 11 points for best rate of return
Agonizing Flames - 12 points
Thermite Mines - 16 points
Conversion - 5 points
Mental Alacrity - Get a few points here, depending on preference
Reckless Power - put remaining points here

One-point Skills

Iskandra’s Elemental Exchange
Overload
Elemental Balance
Mirror of Ereoctes
Absolute Zero
Arcane Will
Nullification
Fabric of Reality (only with +skills)
Canister Bomb + Improved Casing w/ Concussive Bomb
Temper (only with +skills)
Demon Fire (only with +skills)
Ulzuin’s Wrath (only with +skills)

Devotions

We aim for Imp and Ulzuin’s Torch for damage and procs, Solael’s Witchblade and Viper for resist reduction, Giant’s Blood and Chariot of the Dead for more healing, the rest for stats and resists.

Devotion Bindings:
Aetherfire - Devastation or Callidor’s Tempest
Eldritch Fire - Canister Bomb for 100% proc chance
Meteor Shower - Thermite Mines for multiple proc chance
Giant’s Blood - Any passive
Wayward Soul - Any passive

Attributes

Everything can be put into Physique. Inner Focus gives plenty of Spirit on top of mastery points, but a few points spread around to equip gear is not a problem.

Here’s what the stats on the build look like:

Gameplay

OFF alone will destroy most trash mobs. Open up with Canister Bomb to proc Eldritch Fire and start spreading it. Lay down some Thermite Mines where enemies will end up. Cast Icechill (from Night’s Embrace) if facing heroes or resistant mobs and then cast OFF, or go straight to OFF for normal mobs. Cast Blackwater Cocktail on tough enemies if needed, and start Devastation on the toughest units. Spam Callidor’s Tempest to clean up.

Keep a careful watch of Blast Shield duration and cooldown. Alternate keeping Mirror up between Blast Shield cooldowns when facing tough enemies. Use Nullification to remove auras.

Commentary:
The main skill boosts to look for are to OFF, Devastation, and CT if you are using CT. + All skills in Arcanist or Demolitionist are useful .Otherwise, just look for survivability and +% Fire Damage. 3/5 Iskandra’s set provides nice Physical resist, but really any gear for survivability and capping resists is good. Night’s Embrace is necessary if you want to apply OFF to heroes, but even without it the build works fine. Warpfire is great for converting cold damage on OFF to fire damage, which boosts the damage of that skill significantly since we stack fire damage bonuses. Aldanar’s Vanity is nice for reduced Devastation cooldowns, but not necessary.

There are perhaps better items in some slots. Anasteria’s Hat, for instance, looks compelling, but I don’t have that and this is what I put together with what I have.

Closing remarks

I am happy to get feedback and suggestions. I threw this build together with the concept in mind, but it could probably be improved. There are perhaps better BiS items, which I have not thought of or are unfamiliar with.

Reserved for leveling guide and other tips, to come later.

Your baseline build link is for a Saboteur (Demo/Nightblade) not a Sorcerer.

And why Reckless Power instead of Star Pact?

What would he do with Star pact:) this is a full fire build + conversion of ice to fire.

Ant thanks for posting this build, I was wondering about Nights emrace + OFF sorceror. i only tried the amulet on a Spellbreaker for chain freeze Fabius and Shar’zul which is quite fun. Great concept  Evrything looks solid, not sure ehat you could improve at teh moment. I noticed you Wear a lot of + OFF items because this is the concept. For Crucible you could try elemental balance rings for awesome clear speed. Tried and tested OFF +“Warpfired” elemental balance= greatness.

Great niche build, thanks for sharing !

in a side note i see i’m not the only one who uses litterary references to name his chars

Really nice concept and great build
Only thing I could, maybe, change at the first look is dropping CT and taking grenado, you dont lack AOE and grenado is great single target dmg, and you are CD based so spamable skill dont mean much to you, you cant spam it constantly.

Spelbreaker with night embrace + shard of asterkarn and optionally 3pc of torzan = game becomes absurd everything is perma frozen

you speak about the NEW grenado perhaps ?

Not sure what do you mean by new?

Current Grenado is actually pretty strong. Just requires a massive point investment.

Grenado will be modified in 1.0.07. They mention it in the new misadventure.

Interesting build concept, i always thought that not even night’s embrace would be enough to reduce freeze resistance (i thought bosses had 500% stun and freeze resistance). Happy to be proven wrong. I have another question, Manticore’s RR reduces Freeze as well right?

And a request, i can’t see that Mad Queen video due to cancerous FPS, do you mind uploading on Youtube?

Wah curious about that as well when i tried the amolet and the Sahrd of Asterkan. I don’t think it does, just as reduced n resist does not affect ATdCH in a direct way (only that you do more damafe so you steal more life but immune foes are immune regardless). It’s a special stat that needs a special debuff.

My testing was not rigurous but manticore for example was not helping to ffreeze Darius who is very resistent to cold. The shard with only -20% freeze resistance debuff did help. I’m pretty convinced manticore does not help.

EDIT:
Now i checked the grimcalc, it seems i misread it.

I don’t know, that’s why I asked. Star Pact with Lightning/Electrocute/Cold/Frostburn seemed a better fit with OFF to me. But if it’s a conversion build then maybe not.

Whoops, fixed, thanks!

Reckless Power boosts our Fire and Aether damage, which are the main damage types. The casting speed is also good for CT. As mentioned later, the Cold is mostly converted.

Thanks! I will look into the Elemental Balance rings. Those looked very enticing, I went for full OFF to really test out the concept, but it’s probably not needed to overlevel to the degree I did.

Glad someone appreciates the reference

Interesting, I hadn’t even thought about Grenado. I would max High Impact I assume? Is it worth maxing the base skill if we don’t have much bonuses for Physical Pierce?

There are six levels of Hero/Boss Resistance, as given by this link:
http://grimdawn.gamepedia.com/Hero/Boss_Resistances

Everything in category 1-5 is affected. At 5, after Night’s Embrace they only have 50% Freeze Resistance. Category 6 is out of reach, with 500% Freeze Resistance. I haven’t done extensive testing on which bosses are category 6, but I think it’s the big ones such as Log, Lucius, etc. Note that there are specific heroes with additional freeze resistance on top of those categories, like some of the Yeti heroes.

Regarding the frame rate, apologies! I think my computer really is not up to the task of both playing and recording. Unfortunately I think the base video is at that FPS. I am very new to recording however, and just downloaded Plays.tv because it seemed easy. Do you have any recommendations for a better recording program that may give better videos?

Nice to see someone else use this amulet  It’s fun on this build or for chainfreezing on melee builds

One thing I’ve wanted to try is support demo character with embrace + shard of asterkarn and then have a really high dps fire strike sabo to just wail on kids. Could maybe post some nasty Modrogen times if it’s possible to freeze him

Cant tell for sure, some testing would be needed but its worth trying.

Dont know about Mog didnt tried it with spelbreaker, but only things unfreezable with shard+night emb iirc were malkadar and log.

I’m aware of resistance categories. I just never even considered that the toughest things in the game (nemesis, rashalga) would have anything below cat 6 resistances. Thanks mate, your build opens up new possibilities. Although, how do you fare against level 6 resist bosses?

As for recording part, well i have a shitty computer as well. My game crashes atleast 2-3 times a playthrough. Sometimes it crashes in crucible (on wave 148 once). So, no problem there.

P.S

Do you think Mogdrogen can be frozen, can you confirm that?

Got a crash at 148 last night while recording…lol? not so much:)
