Anyone else that experiences that the blacksmiths workshop almost always is full? There are available storageaspace elseware but the goods are not moved. Without having checked thouroughly it looks like it is the heavy machinery that is never moved.
Will this affect production in the building of other goods?
This happens to me too. I don’t think it’s much of a problem though, since you don’t need that many Heavy Tools anyway. Probably better that they stop and make more regular tools instead.
When the Blacksmith becomes full, I think it is because a Heavy Tool has been made and completely fills the available storage space of the Blacksmith. This Heavy Tool seems to never get transferred to a Storehouse to allow the Blacksmith to resume its production!
The Trading Post trader can be commanded to remove the Heavy Tool from the Blacksmith and put it into the Trading Post storage. However, the trader must transfer any other Heavy Tools in the Storehouses of the town into the Trading Post first before the Heavy Tool in the Blacksmith can then be transferred.
I found that this is hard to accomplish using the slider control in the Trading Post. I had 9 Heavy Tools in Town storage and 1 Heavy Tool in the Blacksmith storage, but I could not simply order a transfer of 10 Heavy Tools to the Trading Post using the slider control or manually typing in the number 10 into the Trading Post box and 0 into the Town box. It kept rejecting the transfer!
So, I used the slider control to command a transfer of 11 Heavy Tools (one more than existed) to the Trading Post, and pressed the Confirm button while crossing my fingers. The trader carried out the transfer of 10 Heavy Tools and retreated to wait for the eleventh Heavy Tool to be produced. But of course, I had ended the Heavy Tool production by the Blacksmith by this time. That tenth Heavy Tool had finally been cleared out of the Blacksmith storage so that production of Swords and regular Tools could be resumed!
And now hopefully I can transfer some of those Heavy Tools back to a Storehouse in the town, and sell some of the excess Heavy Tools in the Trading Post to a travelling Merchant.
I believe the devs know the blacksmith needs a little work and balancing. Reality is you don’t need more than 4-6 heavy tools at once so I typically have heavy tools off production and focus on tools/weapons
Yep. Set the production ratio to 1 for Heavy Tools and figured that I couldn’t overproduce that way. Suddenly discovered I had 9 Heavy Tools instead of 3. Plus the one clogging the Blacksmith’s production. Newbie mistake.
i have a blacksmith building for each item and that item only That way I can shut down the whole
building if I want. No need to mess with ratios. Also increases local inventory space so you
never get idle workers waiting for space to free up.
This.
The last game I played to 1000 population I spent extra time at the end ‘optimizing’ as much production as I could - grouping firewood splitters around a stockyard, cobblers and tanneries around the ONLY hide/pelt Stprage facility, etc. Found out that the best way to control the high end metal goods was to separate them: separate production buildings for Heavy Tools, Tools, Weapons, Heavy Weapons, Plate Mail Armor. That also meant I had the choice to turn off what I didn’t need or manufacture some high-value goods for the Trading Post for some big bucks.
Having separate buildings rather than the fiddly sliders gives a lot more control, which is also handy if you are running low on raw materials like Iron ore and/or Coal (or the trees needed to feed the Charcoal Kilns, which in fact was my problem on that map!) and so need to ‘micro-manage’ what you use the raw materials for.
