Came back to the game...holy HELL

What am I doing wrong? Main is level 85 and have between 70 and 80% resistances on all damage types except physical, which is 5% and I can’t find a way to increase it, and 11k life ish
I recently came back to the game and I find the health potion on cooldown now. Well that’s fine, but mob damage in Ultimate is WAAAAAAAAAAAAAY too spiky.

I was at the colosseum and the big bone golem spawns for me to kill. i get him to about half, then he hits me with like 7 debuffs, draining down my 11k life in 2.5 seconds, and even with a potion, I die. …

So I’m like “HOW THE F DO I MITIGATE THAT WHEN I HAVE 80% RESISTS???” Armor total is about 1180. I’m a Druid (Shaman, Arcanist) doing Wind devils, skyshards, totems, mogdrogden pact. I do decent damage, but even with all the best mods I can apply for defenses, that thing (and other mobs who slap you with 7 debuffs instantly that you can’t do anything about) destroys me.

I don’t know what to do. Before, you could spam potions and get through it, but this…???

I’m not having fun because it’s so frustrating. Reputation gains are insanely, ridiculously slow, especially for required powders, and even with the contracts.

I used to have so much fun on the game, but not sure about this current version. ANY advice is appreciated.

Other advice aside, the Health Potion has always had a cooldown. It is now simply no longer a consumable; its cooldown and potency remains unchanged.

For actual advice, can help to post your build: Grim Dawn Build Calculator

Though if I’m thinking of the right Colosseum, that’s a side/challenge area, so could be worth skipping for the time being.

Thank you for replying.

I got the boss down and cleared the area, after 3 deaths. I just got lucky where he didn’t slap me with all those debuffs.

I just don’t see how I am supposed to be able to mitigate all that.

Get some health regen. Use Nullification to remove debuffs.

That Colosseum dude can one shot pretty much anything with his spike nova. You should be able to evade through it, or just kite him.

To get rep quickly, do the crafting bounty. The one that asks you to make a relic.

Hey, I uploaded my build. Thanks in advance for any advice. I’ve forgotten sooooo much about the game.

If you haven’t played in a long while, maybe you are new to Sunder?

Before you were sort of supposed to tank most attacks. But now, you can dodge. Sunders increase your damage taken by some percentage (25 to 30% for the Colisseum kid).

Being sundered is a pretty quick way to die. Your whole screen goes pulsating around the edges when it happens.

When a boss is about to Sunder you, a big skull appears above them. That’s when it’s time to dodge, or run.

As for reputation, you should be good to go with relatively low farming these days.

Your build is lacking on the resists side. Get those babbies to 80 % and it should feel way better! Skelly crossbowmen in particular will hurt real bad with that pierce resist.

Well, don’t forget that Mogdrogden’s pact jacks that up quite a bit. My resists are A LOT better across the board than that Grimcalc window shows.

Yea…I think Sunder was the problem all along…Now that I realize that, maybe I’m doing a lot better than I think.

And thank you for looking and taking the time.

That’s possible, even though Grim Calc takes the Pact into account. Could you please share a screenshot of your ingame resists?
(If they are below 80% then you know what to do anyway)

If you have tried to tank Sunder, then I’m actually surprised it took only 3 deaths! =D
Being Sundered as a caster and tanking it is batcrap insane.

Sir or Madam, I’ll have you know I come from a LONG line of batcrap insane casters. I won’t forsake my lineage.

Also, yea, I think I’ve got it figured out now. I also drink elixirs to help resists/mitigation. My piercing is about 60% in game all said and done, but I still could have better. Just not sure with my current gear how I can manage to get that up…

Apologies for your lineage.

Be ready to drop a non-essential piece of gear at any time to boost your resistances. Look into the blacksmith if need be.
Anything which only contributes to your damage is, in my very dumb opinion, non-essential.
At the moment, that includes… everything you’re wearing, pretty much. You could do well in damage even with a different off-hand, or hat, or anything. Resists first. Damage doesn’t matter when you’re running for your life or getting two-shot.

Blue or purple is not always better. Even a good green with great resists would do you wonder.

You could even consider getting the Primal Bond exclusive skill for more damage absorption, even though none of its other stats make any sense.

First, survive. Second, blast everything.

Can be tricky sometimes to get everything up to 80 while you’re leveling. In this case I’d probably look for some green gloves with good resists.

Also I don’t see much of anything in the sustain department. No life steal, no health regen, no healing procs. So if you get hit you’re pretty much dead when you don’t have a potion on hand. It’s definitely possible to play like this, but if you get caught out it can get very tricky very quickly

Oh and without going too deep into the build, please just pick this:

I have no idea how you made it this far without this bebbe.

Your devotions are 100% focused on damage, and you have literally no healing. Also, 60% pierce res is asking for trouble, especially in this area. Getting that to 80% cuts pierce damage in half.

You can probably take 15 points from Wind Devil and max out Mogdy’s Pact and Oak Skin.

Your pants are the most in need of an upgrade. And then your boots, unless you really like the Sky Fragment.

besides evading other has mentioned, in this particular case you’re playing an arcanist, but

these actually in most cases make sunder relatively trivial for Arcanist builds, as you you can either just tank the dmg for debuff with Mirror, or you can combo it with Nulli to then quicky remove the debuff

but, other classes can also often tank it with either out statting or layered defences, however

GT says you’re pretty far from 80 on some on Ultimate?
image
*i know ingame rolls can vary a bit but it’s quite a lot even for that
-and you want 80 res on all but phys

For a personal preference you also wear a couple too low level items, almost 30 levels under char, which means lower combined stats. Lack of choice greenery can also attribute to this(particularly MIs)
Devotions are very greedy when your item stats don’t compensate for pure dmg devo focus, and could be a prime option to beef things up.
Druid can overall become incredibly tanky, without ending up zdps, including during levelling, specially with stuff like layered heal procs and specially regen bonus.

Bounty system is best used if cheesing specific high rep reward bounties, res of them are generally not worth the effort, and should be done on Ult for max rep reward (and ofc preferably with a Writ or even Mandate already applied)
to assist with this, since the default system is less than courteous, Ceno made a fantastic thing that let us pick those bounties we want and not have to reset after just 5 either [Mod] [Release] Bounties Unlocked - #9 by DenisMashutikov - if you follow Denis’s “install” instructions(plop the file in settings folder instead) then it works like a tool/you don’t have to play it like an actual mod in custom mode
*then the best bounty to pick from factions are Relic crafting bounties, aside from that it’s usually boss killing bounties you wanna cycle

Build/dmg optimization wise you can strip some points of Wind Devil main node and put in buff/support passives, or even max trozan for dmg greed, and you likely don’t want or even need Olextra at this point (your other skills will do more dmg or yield better support, and you don’t lack trash clear dmg with trozan/devils)

This.

I applaud you for going Dual Damage (it is feasible to spec for! :sunglasses:), you just need to have some form of sustain to get this build going in Ultimate. I would second the suggestions to move points into Mogdrogen’s Pact and to perhaps spec heavily into Health Regeneration to help survive. That would entail moving Devotions to Behemoth and Lizard (with perhaps more such as Harvestman’s Scythe) and getting a few Gollus Rings to push Mogdrogen’s Pact into higher levels.

I messed around in GT today while I did some work to make a build for you. It’s something you could work towards and utilizes the suggestions that were made earlier by various posters in the thread today.

There is a focus on Health Regeneration and Cooldown Reduction while retaining the Dual Damage build original idea. If you can get the Trozan’s Skybreach set you’re well on your way to making something like this work. Eternity for a relic further reduces downtime on your sustain (Giant’s Blood/Mirror/etc) while increasing the frequency you can drop TSS and Storm Totems to get your damage going.

The only downside is the 165% Casting Speed, but that’s not that big of a deal since this build is primarily a cooldown caster.

Good luck and have fun with your build! :sunglasses:

Thank you to everyone for the assistance. It is greatly appreciated, and I’m at a much better spot now. I haven’t died since changing devotions and getting some better gear that has the resists I like. Damage is still about the same output, too. The change to MIrror of Ereoctes is just a blessing. Basically an I WIN button.

However, I’m trying to get the blueprint for Seal of Skies. Any advice on the best place to farm for that?

Thanks again!

totems will spit it out fast’ish
nemesis chest is also decent, and ofc hihg SR/crucible eventually/at “end” (sr 30-31 on Normal is relatively easy to clear even at lvl 85+)

Make sure you keep us updated once you reach lvl 100 and clear the game
