What is this thread really about? Well, I figured out almost 6 years ago that it is possible (and pretty effective) to build characters as Double Damage Dealers (DDD) naturally through shared Resistance Reduction and itemization! Item modifiers have been key in enabling so many ideas on how to change skills into the DDD characters I happily built in GrimTools.

Currently I have over 165(!) different DDD builds made in GrimTools and more than half of them made in-game right now. (Special thanks to @Odie’s [Tool] GD save file editor )

ric-flair-whats-causing-all-this

The thing that really bothered me when building characters is so much +% Damage is often left on the table through itemization/Skills/Devotions having multiple Damage types. For example, a character you make that deals Chaos Damage may have quite a large amount of +% Vitality Damage just sitting there unused. You can see this with certain obvious damage combinations such as Aether/Lightning, Fire/Chaos, Cold/Acid and so on. Others are not so obvious such as Cold/Bleeding or Fire/Vitality. It just depends on how you build the character and on what skills you choose to use!

Attempting to make DDD builds can be challenging given some item sets and their inherent damage conversions, but there are ways to get around this. Even if a skill may not be completely split 50%/50%, I will find some way to properly balance out the character’s overall damage output to be as close to even in the end (except for Bleeding… seriously screw you! :face_with_symbols_over_mouth:). You will see that some items provide damage conversion via item modifiers that act in opposite directions. Finding these item modifiers and making them work properly for these meme builds can be fun and challenging!

Important things to note when making a DDD character are that you need:

  • at least +2,000% Damage for each type
  • about -100% RR for each type
  • high flat damage or high Racial Damage % in class combos that lack one of the -RR% types needed
  • and all the regular Offensive/Defensive tricks your characters need to survive the wilds of GD!

In some instances, builds are designed to function based on the set providing built-in Dual -RR% procs. Some prime examples of these procs are listed below.

Some helpful Dual -RR% procs

As you can see in the above pictures, some sets provide very interesting options that can enable you to make some unusual builds such as a DW Caster Fire/Vitality Drain Essence/Ravenous Earth Defiler!

Another interesting feature of DDD builds is the ability to stack flat damage and other modifiers onto skills that you would not normally have access to. This is not OP by any means as the characters typically have less overall damage split between 2 damage types versus a character stacking huge amounts of 1 damage type.

I have posted 3 DDD build threads over the years dating back all the way back to v1.0.7.1. I will link them here and I will also provide updated versions in later posts of improvements/alterations I have made as the game has improved.

Links to my previous DDD builds:

Other builders have posted some different options that exist in DDD form and I will link them here to give them credit for helping to inspire me in my quest to continue making all of these builds.

Links to other poster's DDD builds:

I sincerely hope you all enjoy this thread as much as I have enjoyed planning the builds. My interest in making DDD builds is waning, so I wish to get this posted to the forums before life fully gets in the way and I’m done with GD for good…

Don’t worry too much though, with Fangs of Asterkarn around the corner I have many more DDD builds to make!

Frequently Asked Questions:

Question: Do you use GDStash?

Answer: Of course I do. Unending thanks to @mamba for this fantastic program as I would have quit GD many thousands of hours ago. With limited time to play over the past few years, there is no legitimate way for me to get these items in game. As such, please hold the comments about these builds not being legit.

Question: Are these some of the best builds in all of GD?

Answer: Of course not! These are simply what I find to be fun and something different to create. Some of the builds are quite effective and others are just memes that just cannot compete with top tier endgame builds like you will find posted on the board.

Question: There are no posted CR times or SR levels. How come?

Answer: I don’t play either very often and so I won’t be benchmarking these builds with those game modes. I also do not have time to fight the super bosses around Cairn, so there won’t be any kill times posted for Mogdrogen or Crate. In each post, I may comment about the damage of the build as listed in [Tool] DPYes - Player/pet DPS meter & Misc util and if they are easy to play. These builds should be able to defeat all of the Rogue Dungeon bosses and other MC content.

Question: Wait, where are the save files? I want to play!

Answer: Simply download and use the very handy [Tool] GD save file editor from the currently listed GT link in each post to make the character and give it a spin! :sunglasses:

Question: Hey Rx, mind if I critique your builds?

Answer: Sure, I don’t mind. Please remember though that this is primarily just a thread for me to post my collection of builds I have designed over the years and to get them out to the general public. I hope to inspire other players to play the game in different ways they didn’t think of before.

Just don’t tell me a build would be better as solo damage… #DualDamage4Life :sunglasses:

ric_flair_best_thing_going

Question: I can’t get enough of your DDD builds. How often will you post?!

Answer: Ideally I will post one build per week and I may post more frequently as I go along. It all depends on real-life restrictions and other motivating factors. Wish me luck!!

Literally me right now getting psyched up to do this!
ric_flair_get_ready_woo

Question: Was this thread just an excuse to post Ric Flair gifs?

Answer: I would say that’s about 11% of the reason for the thread… although maybe it’s higher than that!

Got a DDD build of your own that you’re looking to share? Feel free to post it on up!

If you have a DDD build that you’ve been keeping clutched tightly in your mitts and held close to your chest it’s high time you let it go so it can shine in the spotlight of this Wheelin’ n’ Double Damage Dealin’ Digest! :sunglasses:

Please follow the general post format I started for continuity sake. Here is what I have used so far:

  • Post your GrimTools link for all to see! :star_struck:

  • Build features quick summary (not required, but nice to see)

  • Fashion Dawn (you’ve gotta be stylin’ when you’re profilin’ your build!)

  • In-game damage breakdown (Skill tooltip breakdown or DPYes real-time DPS is nice to see)

  • Build comments (sometimes the journey is more enjoyable than reaching the finish line!)

When you post your entry to the thread I will add it to the Build Index in the second post for people to explore.

Keep it simple and, most importantly, have fun doing it!

ric-strut

In closing, I want to send a huge Thank You to all of :crate: for making such an awesome game that keeps drawing me back again and again. Hands down you have made the best ARPG on the market. Keep up the great work! :muscle:

ric_flair_thank_you_all_1

An equally huge Thank You goes out to the awesome GD Forum community as well! You are all the best! :grinning:

Build Comment: My very first DDD Build posted after Nex & Ortus got buffed. Overall, this build started out a touch squishy and I went through many variations to get it to kill all the MC content. Morgoneth was a struggle, but it was able to finally conquer him. I have lobbied several times to get this set some defined Pyromancer support since it would be a nice addition to the exclusive Saboteur modifiers. Hopefully Z will give N&O some Occultist mods in the future! :+1:

Build Comment: I was inspired by @fordprefect’s [1.1.9.3] The Pith Hunter or DW Vitality Witch Hunter. SR 85/Ravager of Minds/Mogdrogen as it seemed that there was a decent DDD Witch Hunter build that could be made. After some tweaking I managed to make this very smooth to play Fleshcarver WH, although the finished product gives it slightly more Bleeding Damage vs Vitality. Overall, the build is fast to move, easy to play and does not require much skill to survive. What really makes the build is the fantastic Fashion Dawn that ties in the WH auras quite nicely! The character really looks like it belongs among the cannibals carving up some flesh in Barrowholm… :grava_yes:

Build Comment: I made this build when I was on a Drain Essence kick and I knew it was possible when I stumbled upon the Scion of Bitter Winds. Although Reaper is lacking in Cold/Acid RR, this build performs quite well with the added Damage from item modifiers and the DE Transmuter. Sowing confusion in the battlefield using Tainted Eruption bound to Shadow Strike helps scramble packs before I rip the life out of them with the chilling touch of Death itself! :skull:

Build Comment: I made this build when I was on a Upheaval kick and I wanted an easy 3-4 button build that you could almost hold down attack and kill things. The Fashion Dawn is strong with this one! Afterall, you need to look the part as well as play the part. Upheaval slaps with lots of OA to trigger it. When it doesn’t trigger though… that’s when you feel like you’re shooting with wet noodles. Very relaxing build here overall, just WoP everything and snipe away with your quiet crossbow. Thwup, thwup, thwup, BOOM, BOOM, thwup, BOOM! That’s exactly what the build sounds like!

Build Comment: Drawing my inspiration from the Fashion Dawn ether, I was very happy to find the epic (and Epic! :grinning:) Coven Headcrusher from which I could create this build around. With the Stormseer Sapphire & Mark of Nacrathan combo, my dream of a Cold/Lightning CT Druid became a reality. Unfortunately, the Damage was a touch lacking and the ADCtH just wasn’t there. That all turned around with these changes in v1.1.9.8 Hotfix 1:

After these very nice changes, the build really came into it’s own. CT really crushes it here, but the build is squishy! 15/12 Wendigo Totem helps a bit, but spam CT has never really been a great damage skill itself - the Devotion procs are where it’s at…

Blizzards and Lighting crashing down all around!

Venomfang - 2H Melee Physical/Acid Cadence Blademaster

  • 3/4 Warborn Bastion Set for Physical :hammer: Offensive buffs & War Cry CD reduction
  • Using Conduit of Warring Whispers with the Acid :faction_dreeg: Cadence prefix
  • Wielding the Mythical Slithbane for the beautiful +2 to Nightblade/Soldier skills (too bad no +Physical Damage% on here though…)
  • Rocking an Ugdenbog Girdle to help balance the Physical :hammer: to Acid :faction_dreeg: Ratio (not enough if low-rolled…)
  • ~1800% Physical :hammer:/~1300% Acid :faction_dreeg: Damage before Cunning & Spirit Bonus
  • -93% Physical :hammer:/-95% Acid :faction_dreeg: RR

Venomfang DPS
(vs Dummy with all buffs active via DPYes)

Build Comment: Sometimes when you create a build you know it’s not going to be something to write home about, but you still Soldier on (pun intended!) to see how bad it really is. I mean really, a Physical :hammer:/Acid :faction_dreeg: BM?! Turns out it’s not that bad. Damage is pretty mid overall and not truly DDD build-worthy unless you are rocking a 60% Acid to Physical belt. 26/22/22 Cadence with 8 targets helps in the crowd clearing ability and the 56% WPS and Beastslayer proc helps in between. Movement is great with 3 movement skills and it’s surprisingly tanky. This Fashion Dawn is my son’s favorite - he says it’s clean while being imposing and goes well with the actual look of Slithbane. I agree! 5 Flair points awarded to team Venomfang!

That can be a fun little collection of funky builds. Do you accept entries or is it just for your builds? I got a couple of builds that fit your criteria.

Yeah, this seems gonna be a fun community works, especially after the completion of the missing build compendium by @DeputyChuck

Very nice! When I first started playing I always imagined that this was the intent of the game, double damage types, since everything has it. I was a bit disappointed when I found out that wasn’t really the case. I’m glad it actually can work! :+1:

Unleash those builds for a Wooo-off! Wooo!

kurt-angle-ric-flair

Excellent idea! Absolutely feel free to contribute with your own builds. In my sleep-deprived state struggling to find the time to draft these posts I was thinking the whole time of just releasing my own builds out to the wild, but let’s make it open to all of the community!

Watching the GD Forum help complete @DeputyChuck’s The MISSING builds compendium desire to have functioning builds for every damage type for every class combo over a span of 2 years was very fun! I had forgotten about that endeavor even though I added a few DDD builds to help complete it.

I will add to the original post to encourage others to provide their builds with a general format to follow for continuity sake (GT link, damage breakdown in-game, optional comments from the author).

One thing I hope you all include is some :fire: Fashion Dawn!! You’ve gotta look the part as well as play the part just like the Nature Boy! :money_mouth_face:

ric-flair-nature-boy

This was my thought process when I started this journey. I was very pleasantly surprised at the outcome and if anything, the numerous buffs Z has put in GD with each version makes it much easier and forgiving to craft DDD Builds!

Maybe this was the original real way to build characters… we will uncover the great Crate Conspiracy by showing this to the world!

I am not sure what the formatting here should be but here we go

Bleeding/Vitality Wildblood Trickster

I remade my old Bleeding Wildblood Trickster into more of a hybrid to increase its leech with Vines while maintaining same level of Bleeding damage output. It has just a bit over 2000% to Vitality damage, but humongous -65% rr to Vitality from maxed out Swarm and flat RR on demand on Ring of Steel make Vitality part count enough that build can leech well with Vines.
Build is fast in Crucible but slow-ish in SR 75-76. Can kill Ravager of Totems with some sweaty kiting.

Grasing Vines’ tooltip:

Good old dual damage Dagallon

A build that is for some odd collection of reasons liked by beginners a lot (I guess some think that gunplay build like that is kind of a poster boy of GD builds and some just found old YouTube Dagallon guides that have a lot of views), more than it should, because in its current state, even when thoroughly min-maxed is not that special. But yeah, winning way was to combine two damage types and support both by relevant -rr% devotion (as adviced by @banana_peel himself). And it is easy to activate both -rr% devotions and elemental storm just by Fire Strike itself and its wps, because its wps are pass thru and multi-projectile.

I tried to maintain decent enough damage output while beefing up defenses with maxed out seal and it kinda worked: it can facetank Ravager (not with the 100% success rate of course) or be somewhat fast in SR.. It also has mostly easy greens with interchangeable affixes which makes it relatively easy to put together.

Looks great to me! Format is just fine as they are just quick summaries with some insight into what made you create the build or troubles that popped up. I would say just split builds into separate posts in the future so I can easily add them to the Build Index. :+1:

Only thing they’re missing is some sweet Fashion Dawn to go with it. The character’s gotta be stylin’ when you’re profilin’ your build! :sunglasses:

ricflair-wwe-kiss-stealin

No $15,000 Rolex, diamond ring or $600 custom Alligator shoes needed, but a nice Fashion Dawn to go with the build is suggested.

Geez, pretty big DD topic. The only off-beat I’ve made (and worked) was cold/acid spam ABB Witch Hunter.

Let’s go @Nery! Post it up! You (and all the other OG builders) have made lots of great builds over the years. Can’t wait to see what you can come up with! :+1:

Cold/Acid spam ABB WH is actually pretty fun btw - I’ve got one myself that I’ll post sometime.

I welcome any addition even if a build didn’t work fantastically, but is solid and fun to play with great Fashion Dawn to go with it. In fact, I’m going to post a 2H Melee Physical/Acid Blademaster right now myself… not the best damage (it’s pretty mid) but it looks great and is different for sure! :grinning:

Because it looks spectacular, and it’s a quintessential gunslinger. Not that many ARPGs even offer guns as weapons. The build absolutely was my first love in GD.

I’ve got a weird Pierce/Bleed Blade trap infiltrator that actually works for some reason, but I see you already have that damage combo in there.

It doesn’t have nearly close to -100 RR in bleeding, but since it’s the least resisted damage in the game, it sort of doesn’t need it.

Should I still post it ?
