Cannot delete character

I just created a new character, but it reappears in the game every time after I delete it. I’ve tried many times and still can’t delete it.

Disable Cloud saving in Steam + in the game settings

If you turn off cloud saves in the game settings and then relaunch the game, none of your characters will be there.

I just tried creating a new character, and it can be deleted normally. Only this one character keeps automatically restoring itself after I delete it.

I disconnected the internet, deleted the character, then reconnected and overwrote the cloud with the local save, but this character still comes back. It’s freaking weird.

It’s almost like the cloud is restoring your character when your computer is connected to the Internet. Weird.

Turn on cloud save in BOTH Steam client AND Grim Dawn options. Delete character.

Exit game.
Start game.
Is the character still there?

I can delete the character after turning off Steam Cloud, but as soon as I turn it back on, the character is automatically restored.
I can’t disable cloud saving in the game either—once I do, all characters disappear.

This is a bug.
I can confirm that you cannot delete all characters with cloud saves on. The last character you delete is somehow still there even though you’ve deleted it.

This is with Steam cloud settings turned on and the GD Game options Cloud save checked.

To reproduce, delete all characters with cloud saving on. The last character will not be deleted. It shows deleted in the game, but the save file is not deleted.

Then when you launch the game it will appear.

If you create a new character, both will appear when you launch the game.
If you delete the first character it will remove from the game, but not the save file.
If you re-launch the game both characters will appear.
Basically the first character (or the last one that was ‘deleted’) doesn’t really get deleted.

EDIT: For this test I renamed my local save files so that they were not in play.
I had existing Steam cloud characters that updated when I turned on cloud settings in both Steam and the game.

Follow the instructions in the link GSAsylum provides to move cloud saves to local ones and then make sure cloud saving is off in both the Steam settings and the ingame Options menu. Then delete the character.

powbam details the steps here in that thread.

It’s clearly a bug within the game and how cloud save is happening.

When you delete the character in the game, the save folder is deleted, but when you exit from GD, the deleted save folder and file gets restored.

I did verify the game files via Steam.

mamba said the game switched to reading stash from memory in v1.3, maybe it’s the same for chars?
so because the char is still in memory, even tho the save folder is deleted it’s not actually removed from memory yet, so when the game is exit the game dumps the last char that was in memory and it gets acted like a final save point?

*rando speculation from luddite

Could be. Only the devs would know that, but it sounds like a good guess.
Just wanted to ensure that it was clear it’s not user error.

Maybe it is just some sync corruption/issue.
I was able to finally delete the character by:

  1. Delete the character in Grim Dawn.
  2. Close Grim Dawn.
  3. Delete the character folder from the Steam cloud save folder location. C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\userdata\steamID\219990\remote\save
  4. In Steam turn off cloud save.
  5. Launch Grim Dawn.
  6. Close Grim Dawn.
  7. In Steam turn on cloud save.
  8. Launch Grim Dawn and when prompted about the save file discrepancy, select the local version.
  9. Then the file was not downladed/recreated.

At least that worked for me.

I left the GD game option for cloud save checked for this entire process.

Thanks, I managed to delete it following this method.

Problem solved, thanks for your reply.
