Chinese Pet Builds Review

Actually, I’m truly sorry for all this back-and-forth. I fully understand how difficult it is for the development team; it’s impossible to satisfy every single player, or even the majority of the community. That’s why I’ve been saying all along that the devs have done an excellent job balancing gameplay loops, loot farming rewards, and other core systems.

Personally, I was really upset when the altar affinity reroll mechanic got patched out. With the amount of time I’ve poured into this game, I will likely never be able to craft those Intrepid Warboots with double rare summoner affixes ever again. Even so, I never lashed out at the development team and fully stand behind this fix. I still believe this change is reasonable for a large portion of the playerbase. My core mindset is simple: I spend money to buy the game so I can enjoy myself. I don’t want to grind away fruitlessly like hammering a rock for hours on end with nothing to show for my effort, or get one-shot by a boss out of nowhere.

So imagine this scenario: I find an interesting new build, grind through the campaign, level up, grind faction reputations and farm required gear, only for someone to rush the devs into calling for a nerf halfway through my farming process. Let me be clear: my frustration is directed solely at that individual’s behavior, not the dev team. I paid for the DLC, yet I’m robbed of the opportunity to even test out this build because of their premature request. This grievance has nothing to do with whether the build was overpowered or whether the devs ultimately patched it. Fundamentally, their action actively blocked me and other players from enjoying a fresh build. I want to emphasize that I hold no resentment or ill will toward the developers whatsoever.

Regarding volunteer playtesters, I do appreciate the contributions they have made from that perspective. That said, this belongs to another contradiction.

Content creators on Bilibili dived deep into the game right after the DLC launch, thoroughly explored the new content, and created dozens of detailed build guides for the community to learn from, which earned them widespread recognition among Chinese players. In contrast, players like Duskdeep86 gave the impression on public social platforms that they had barely spent any meaningful time playing the full release of the DLC, let alone thoroughly analyzing the controversial new build.

Yet they hold the official channel to communicate directly with the development team. They hid behind seemingly harmless excuses such as “not intending to reply” or “returning to real-life priorities”, then subjectively called for nerfs on other creators’ builds without any proper testing and submitted those opinions as formal feedback to the devs.

From my point of view, this conduct bears little relevance to their earlier playtesting work. Unsurprisingly, many content creators have come to believe their primary motive was to uphold a self-constructed authoritative image as official liaisons, so they could perpetually reap prestige and clout within the player community.

I don’t know what kind of harassment you’ve been dealing with, and I’m truly sorry that you have to deal with any, but I don’t think coming at this with am attitude is going to help in any way.

English isn’t my native language either, but your tone makes it sound like the build nerf in the game has nothing to do with you. If someone broke your toy, am I not allowed to feel upset? And because of that, I’m the one who has to go see a doctor?

The level of emotion some of you attach to a computer game is off the charts. It’s really upsetting just to watch.

It was never patched. At least according to the patch notes. The altar affecting rerolls was never a thing.

Pets and it is not Maya stirring up drama?

Times truly have changed :bird:

That’s because it has nothing to do with me.
I’m a player, not a developer.

There’s a difference between breaking your toy… And being told “you have to play slightly different”

The broken toy analogy only makes sense if someone prevented you from playing the game at all.

And being upset is fine… but being really upset to the point of resorting to online vitriol and personal attacks against the devs is not indicative of an adult’s maturity level. (If you’re not actually an adult, I apologize)

The intent of my post is that what you are describing is not a “Chinese playerbase” thing, it is a “universal human behavior” thing that will happen (and has happened) regardless of which country the most abusive of players comes from.

Agree that it shouldn’t be this way, but performance metrics are precisely how “metas” are formed and how people form conversations about how which skills or items need buffs. What goes off the rails is when people provide emotional attachment to their favorite skills (thematic, usefulness or otherwise) and form negative-review campaigns to besmirch a company’s reputation because their favorite skill is no longer “meta” like it used to be.

You don’t have to worry about bursts of incoming damage when anything that can provide said damage is dead before they have a chance to use their dangerous skills. That’s why extreme damage outliers need to be looked at first and foremost.

If Duskdeep86 didn’t come forward, somebody else would have posted a similar build, whether it be mad_lee, banana_peel, Superfluff, or Maya and nofika4u (if we’re talking about pet builds specifically). ARPG players are capable of determining build strength regardless of country, and even if the video in question involves really difficult to farm gear, most builders attempt to post build performance with “reasonable to farm” gear to show how much power is squeezed from those 99 - 100% optimizations.

As for the Ascension Altar re-rolling affix changes / nerfs, that is a separate discussion entirely and best left for its own thread.

I am a Chinese player who has been playing Grim Dawn for several years. From my experience, it seems that every game update keeps nerfing the popular builds on the Chinese server. Whenever a build I liked got nerfed, I would just move on to the next one. But after this cycle repeated too many times, over time I began to wonder: are Chinese players being specifically “targeted”? With this sense of fatigue, I temporarily put the game down.

Then when this DLC was released, I was surprised to find that two Chinese players had actually taken the initiative to post on the official forums asking for nerfs. This suddenly made me think of all the previous adjustments—it turned out that the anger accumulated over time by Chinese players was not directed at the development team, but at these two individuals.

And now, those two are still lying in their forum posts. They have taken screenshots from Bilibili videos, claiming that they have many supporters, but the truth is: they are paying to promote their videos and deleting all comments that disagree with them. Disgusting.

As for the suggestion to nerf summoners, the reason couldn’t be simpler—it’s only because these two only play summoner builds, and it has nothing to do with whether summoners themselves are strong or not. Nerfing summoners will only cause players to leave. What should be fixed within a week are bugs, not builds that haven’t even had their gear assembled yet.

Oh, come off it. I seriously doubt you even play this game, and if you do, you’re probably a normal‑mode tourist. Who’s been hurling abuse at the devs? Spare me the baseless accusations. Is your go‑to move to pose as the purely rational arbiter, cheering on every patch like the developers are infallible, all while putting on an air of superiority?

他们这很多人已经被黄昏跟德鲁伊先入为主了,盯着国内热门bd举报的八成就是那俩人,自己玩的召唤已经超模到挂机刷竞技场了,还在看不顺眼其他bd,呼吁官方各种削弱

The opinions of normal-mode tourists are as valid as any other, but I do not think DeputyChuck is one.

What does this has to do with anything that’s been said so far ???
This is unnecessary

I’m not saying YOU did… I’m saying some people have been upset and did that.

This is how this thread starts:

So there are some people who did. I was responding to that.

I’m not trying to pose as anything, and I have also been critical of some of the changes made in the past. BUT the difference is I have always voiced my opinion with RESPECT for the people working hard on this game, and never stooped to personal attacks. (Again, I’m not saying this is something YOU have done, but this is the subject of the thread here)

While we are complaining, can we get Conjurer Pet summoning reverted to how it was?
Actually do the same for Necro Pets as well, instead of having to select location on ground where they need to be summoned :triumph:.

That’s only under some limited contexts, though. I personally wouldn’t consider a super squishy build that can only burst down Ravager in 15 seconds but nothing else overpowered. Unless if can also burst down every single celestial or an entire level of high SR/skeleton dungeon in the same manner, which I highly doubt given this runekeeper build almost died to Ravager only 2 secs in. I think when it comes to balancing, you also need to take into account what can someone get out of a glass-canon build like that. In this case, just lots of Ravager’s gazes and some bragging right. That’s it.

That’s why zhp bossers that literally allow players to skip Maven phases have been a thing forever in POE and I don’t recall ever hearing people say they need to be nerfed. Cauz it’s barely as “profitable” as mapping, if not less.

Speaking of burst damage, here’s a newly posted video of a pet build melting Ravager in 15 secs with full ascended gear and in 18 secs without.

GrimTools:

Sure not as fast as 9 secs, but also notice how its health bar barely even budged during these 15 secs? That needs to be looked at a lot more if you ask me because it means the build can probably do a lot more than just speed farming ravagers. Not to mention, as a pet build, it can afk in Crucible naturally. Not saying there’s anything wrong with afk farming. You can technically afk in Simulacrum with something like Righteous Fire too in POE. But in no world can a Righteous Fire build ever burst down an Uber boss like that.

Edit: the above build can now melt the Ravager of Flesh in 11 seconds after the 1.3.0.7 change that potion applies to pets.

The summoning mechanic was changed specifically because of bugs like this:

It’s not ideal, but I hope this means that for Beastcaller’s and Lost Souls builds where you get 2 Briarthorns / Hellhounds, it means that you get to summon both of them at once instead of having to wait X seconds before you can summon the second one.

Bysmiel Trinkets Familiar had 2x summon at same time before without bugs though .

I don’t think this was necessary for the fix.

Thank to those that shared some build examples.

The results match what I expected to see. The cusp of the issue is two-fold, and was for some time: the threat system and pet durability. Not sure we can do much about the first, but we will be hitting up the second for v1.3.1.

Now I’m going to lock this thread before things get too personal and too many people say things they will regret.

Not unless you want bugs back.
