Coal heated housing policy and market storage mangement suggestion

I really enjoy using the Coal-Heated Housing policy, and the new functionality to distribute coal from the Marketplace is excellent. However, I’ve noticed a small issue.

It seems I can’t control how much coal is being stored at each Market. Is there a calculation behind this—something like number of houses × coal per house = coal storage per Market?

I’m asking because the current storage levels feel a bit high. Most of my Markets hold around 120 coal, which is manageable (even if it takes effort to reach that level—that’s on me). But I’ve got a few Markets storing ~230 coal, and that feels excessive.

Would it be possible to introduce a way to manually control coal storage levels, similar to how we manage warehouse levels?

Also, I think having min/max levels for food items could help manage the distribution of different food types across large settlements more effectively.

Storage limits for markets were tried a little while ago, but resulted in marketeers/villagers running back and forth all the time.

I understand, thanks for telling me. Hard coded/backend levels, are they calculated in a set way? This is more for my curiosity.

No idea since I’m not a dev. Hopefully Zantai can give you some info when he’s back online later.

That’s dissapointing :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye: , thanks anyway.

Let’s wait and see.

It doesn’t solve the problem of the marketplaces holding a ton of coal, but if the problem is that they’re starving your industry, you could put a high minimum storage on the stockyard near where your industrial buildings are. The marketplaces will end up holding all the excess, which might be pretty inconvenient, but at least you can (hopefully) keep the buildings that need it in a good state that way.

The markets in my city are hoarding coal as well, they take it there even if I uncheck the coal box on the market, hundreds of it. I don’t have the policy enabled.

OP, what I do about markets is put a root cellar beside them and set your quotas there so grocers grab it in like 2 seconds if they need it. Just small amounts for minumum quotas, set upper quotas for things you produce lots of like greens beans etc to route excess into main storage. Storage buildings are a dime a dozen.

Yesterday after my comment I monitored the Markets more closely, and the ~230 coal storage issue didn’t occur again. I’m guessing it may have resolved itself after a reload.

Now, all Markets are storing around 120 coal, which feels reasonable for a settlement with a population of around 1,000. I’ve also increased my overall coal limits significantly, so I now need to maintain more than 900 coal in total. This ensures there’s enough in the Stockyard to keep my Foundries and Blacksmiths running smoothly.

You’ll probably need to raise this as a bug report in the appropriate forum section so the devs can investigate further. I haven’t encountered this myself, likely because I enable the policy as soon as I have a decent coal supply.
