Concerning Combat - My most desired changes after ~150 hours of play

Hello again,

I’ve been playing farthest frontier for a while now and I really love it.
There are many things that are great about the game but you already know them: the love for details, the atmosphere, the organic looking growth from village to city, optional combat…

But i want to focus on the things that im my eyes have the most need of improvement.
[I will put a percentage in Brackets to show how badly i would like to have this (fixed)]

Concerning Combat

In general I like the Idea of having to defend your villagers, for me it is an essential part of the game.
But it would be a lot easier if they weren’t so fucking stupid.

Playing on hardest difficulty it is a real pain to loose so many precious villagers because they don’t know how to react when they see a horde of heavily armored raiders. These are the things that annoyed me the most during raids:

  1. Civilians (especially hunters) attacking Raiders,
even if it means fighting alone agains a large group. They keep dying unnecessary deaths if you don’t micromanage every villager that might at some point come into vicinity of a Raider. [80%]

  2. Civilians running all over the place but not to safety.
They keep getting slaughtered en masse on the streets if you don’t evacuate all of them manually. And you still loose some of them because they return after a minute or so. And you can’t just select the whole city because then your guard towers will also lose their guards. It takes minutes during raids to carefully select every villager of threatened city parts without also selecting the guard towers.
And it is even more infuriating if you then still loose 3-5 villagers mostly because of their stupidity.
Sometimes I give up and let things take their course to later be rewarded with a sense of temporary relief and ~10-30 dead villagers. [999999999999%]

Idea for a Fix: Guard towers having a bell button like the town center. Ringing the bell results in every villager within its circle of influence (defend radius) seeking shelter in the nearest available building, with the highest possible priority.

  1. Being able to manually billet soldiers into forts / barracks. You can get them out with ease but putting them back into the fort is impossible with enimies around. Soldiers are able to deal substantial damage using ranged weapons in the fort, perfect when the enemy has the upper hand [50%]

  2. Soldiers loosing their equippment when the Guard tower or Barracks is destroyed, wich results in them being slaughtered like civilians despite them having had armour and swords just seconds ago. Something I only encountered several times so I don’t know if its real or just my imagination. Everything happened so fast! [40%]

Those are the things concerning combat that I feel need some improvement. Some of them have ragequit potential. Having to deal with that nearly every game year has significantly worsened my farthest frontier experience

Before this already long post gets any longer I will post my other ideas in a second post.

  1. In my opinion, it is necessary to introduce a militia mechanic, when, if there are weapons in the warehouse, they are distributed to the settlers in the event of an alarm.
Let’s say there is an arsenal, and within a radius of the arsenal, settlers receive armor and weapons.
  2. introduce a tactics panel for the army -
    Buttons
“aggression” - soldiers attack the nearest enemy,
“formation battle” - a group of soldiers applies formation and receives a bonus against the enemy
“hit and run” - uses ranged weapons
  3. I think we need to introduce horses and cavalry into the game
Moreover, two types of horses can be bred - working and fighting.
Work horses can, for example, be used in the fields and for logistics between warehouses within a settlement.
Cavalry is a mobile combat unit that can both patrol and quickly move between skirmish zones

I like the Idea but in terms of the amount of content needed to be added it sounds more like a combat dlc for later.
I would buy it, no doubt, but I think a quicker solution for moving civilians to safety to save them from being slauhtered would be a much needed quality of life fix. Right now during a raid they just keep running around doing their usual business, even if there are raiders just around the corner.

It would be nice to have a button to tell everyone in the city to seek shelter in the nearest building. It would be even better if you had an additional option to just evacuate a smaller area of the city to stop people from running around in threatened areas. Hence my idea with the guard towers.

A militia mechanic is a great idea, but you still have people that need to seek shelter like children for example. And there are times where you don’t have enough equippment for everyone. It would not solve the whole problem, but would be awesome not the less.

One idea would be that there is an armoury where weapons are stored. When the militia is rallied, everyone fit for military service is equipped until there is nothing left. So the number of militia troops is determined by the number of weapons and armour you have and the number of people fit for service.

The equipped militia fights less effectively than the regular soldiers and returns the weapons after use to the armory. This would add a lot of immersion and realism to the game and would be a great addition!

But I would still like to have the option to tell civilians in a certain area to seek the nearest shelter as fast as possible.
