Crenelated Walls & Ramparts

Would be a nice upgrade.
Something that would allow us to forgo doubling and tripling wall layers, but still be able to repel raiders armed with swords and spears.

Most of the ‘elaborations’ of fortifications date back to the Ancient Era (crenelations and Towers jutting out from walls to at least 1000 BCE) and I second the idea that they would be legitimate Upgrades to the game:

  1. Crenelations and ‘battlements’ on top of the walls, including ‘murder holes’ so that men atop the wall can drop rocks, hot sand, boiling oil, etc on attackers below.
  2. Gate Houses with all of the above and double raisable gates with a covered way between them that can be turned into a Killing Ground from above.
  3. Moats and drawbridges. Even a dry moat makes it harder for the enemy to get to the wall, setting them up to get shot at more.
  4. Roofs over the wall walkways. IRL they protected defenders against enemy fire, and because they were usually made of woods, most surviving medieval walls no longer have them, but the evidence is that they were almost universal.

Excellent ideas!

Grabbing up a mob of workers and directing them to the top of a wall should instantly turn them into rock and spear throwers, ladder-repellers, and if spread across the top of a gate, they should drop boiling oil that nearby towers can ignite.

Grabbing your hunters and placing them up on upgraded walls could add ranged capabilities where towers can’t yet reach.

It might require some re-coding of both firing and building placement mechanics, but either round or square towers projecting from the wall to provide flanking fire against people attacking the wall and to cover approaches to the wall, also date back to Pre-History, 6000+ years ago. Towers as part of wall systems, in fact, seem to have been part of any serious city defense for almost as long as people have been building stone city walls.

Of course, if they provide another ‘Tier’ of improved defenses, I suspect they will also want to provide another Tier of city attack capabilities. I would love to see a set of separate attack capabilities: battering rams against gates, scaling ladders to go over the walls, catapults or trebuchets to attack the fortifications directly. You might not know exactly how and/or with what a given attacking group is going to hit you . . .
