Distant personal farms

The idea is that one large family (clan) can build their farm far from the city, in undeveloped lands. 12-16 people will keep a cow, several goats, chickens, a vegetable garden, hunt and fish. They are fully self-sufficient in food and live on the farm. They come to the city only to the market for things and to taverns. This will add interesting life to the unexplored corners of the map.

Would need a change in the way farming works as all farmers work on all fields.

You didn’t understand the meaning of the writing. The author’s intention is to create NPC buildings such as radar camps or ruins. I agree with this opinion, and I think that when expanding a city you need the ability to demolish villages and accept NPCs as villagers.

I understood perfectly, but if they try that atm then they’ll have all their farmers running to/from any crop fields they build. And their villagers would also be constantly going to/from the market to stock their houses.

Not saying it’s not an interesting idea, but would require some changes to the game to make it happen.

There’s nothing to stop you building outlying settlements now, but you need to have things like markets, well, compost yard, maybe storehouse so the people working don’t have to run around the map to get stuff they need. I built one recently for my mining community as I have several infinite mines close together, but right at the end of the map.

It is not necessary to make large fields for farms right away, because this will really require reworking the actions of peasants working on common fields. Perhaps, start with small farms for 1 family with a small garden, a cow, a bird and a garden. Such Hilly Billy. They will not be NPCs, just settlers with a wide range of duties on their farm)
