Companies are the de facto unit of control, and finer grained control with units smaller than 12/24 soldiers is often desirable. Needing to build a new building per controllable group of soldiers is, in my opinion, excessive overhead. The ability to either have multiple companies in one barracks, or to subdivide companies into squads, would solve this problem.
