Flattening Tool Feedback

I have been seeing increased discussion around the leveling tool on the game subreddit and believe that the function could do with some love. Now if it is a technical limitation with how the grid system works please disregard, but the leveling tool is really a pain to use. So much so that myself, and others included, forget it exists. Is there a way to perhaps utilize the tech tree to unlock better leveling techniques? For instance the base leveling abilities could be limited to the current system, but then researching Terracing allows you to level the area to the height of the first grid the order is placed on. Or whatever way works best with how the system functions, with of course limitations in height difference to avoid unrealistic layouts.

I think your problem is that you are not using the terrain leveling tool available in the game correctly.
Simply place a gate at the desired height, use the terrain tool with a size of 1x6 about 10 times. Place 3 more gates on the 1x6 area that has just been leveled and expand it to 6x6. Continue expanding with a range of 6x6 around. To make a slope and look nice, place a gate down and level it with a size of 1x10 about 5 times (depending on the desired height and slope)

In general, it is very simple and effective. The labor of the people is commensurate with the results obtained. There is absolutely no need to change / strengthen the power of this tool.

You can see the image of my static defense area or the video for a better visualization (from 0:42)

With the model as in the image, with 100 construction workers, I can complete it in 10 years in game. That’s too fast to be able to set up an “impregnable super fortress”

The problem is that the method you describe is not at all intuitive to how people think a levelling tool should work.

Any game worth playing has issues that require players to explore / exchange information with each other to be able to maximize its functionality. Not only the terrain leveling tool, Farthest Fronter also has many “hidden elements” that are completely unintuitive. But these are the things that make the game attractive.

Even on Steam, there was a detailed guide on this terrain leveling tool right when the game was first released

I appreciate your write-up, and taking the time to do so. This does indeed help me as far as understanding the tool. However, I am not trying to go as far as your example insofar as creating a tower defense, rimworld like kill box. I am talking about simply leveling out a spot for a plaza, or making one of the multitudes of iron deposits on a mountain flat enough to build a mine. While your point on needing to share information with other players has some merit, this is not a belief shared by everyone. The purpose of early access is to give our feedback on how to make the game the best and most accessible it can be. All our experiences are going to be different, and writing off the difficulties someone has due to it being easy for you to understand does not change the fact that it is a credible issue. I see no inherent downside to making mechanics in the game more accessible to everyone.

Agree with you broshimitzu. Not everyone is making crazy fortresses, some of just want to flatten a bit of land for one building, which shouldn’t be that hard or require ten years of in-game time.

I placed a school on a very minor hill. The hill was just uneven enough that the school building began to clip through the ground at various angles, with the bottom roots of its hedgerows visible. I spent years in game trying to smooth that hill enough so the school could be flat, but it was IMPOSSIBLE. Every attempt to fix it just altered it to another weird angle. It drove me nuts!

I give a very complicated example (building a static defense system) but can be solved easily to prove that leveling the terrain in a place that is not too rough, does not need a high height just to place a construction (school, hospital) is a very simple and fast thing. You can do it the way I said above to see if the terrain leveling tool is too powerful and simple.

Other people are telling you that in their experience it’s not “solved easily” or “very simple and fast”. Just because you have figured it out doesn’t mean it’s been as achievable for others, and it’s not your place to tell others how they experience the game.

If you don’t know something, you need to invest time to research and find a solution (this is the best way because it is the appeal of the game). In case you don’t have enough ability, don’t have time… then you can ask others for experience in handling it (forum, steam, youtube, discord…)
Instead of complaining that something is too difficult, you should follow one of the two methods above. That is basic not only in games but also in real life.

hi, like other said in this thread. While i agree with you that it’s part of the appeal of most games that some stuff needs skills and some ‘‘hidden’’ things, the Early Access forums are really the best place for someone to voice their comment on any aspect of a game that is in active development. If 1 out of 10 people seem to have a problem with the tool, they won’t change it. If it turns out a majority of people are voicing concerns regarding the tools and/or offering constructive criticism, then the devs will definitely rework it.

At the end of the day, most people play a game to wind down and while needing to improve my skills in an aspect of a game is appealing, i think most people at least want things to be intuitive… I’m about 105 hours into that game and i’m not yet 100% certain how to best use that tool. let’s say i’d like to spend my brain power on more interesting parts of the game, such as the city blocks layouts and my economy…
