I scored GRID for a cool $4. Word round the campfire is that GRID is really rad, which is good because I’m into rad games.

Edit: So I intended to play it for about 30 minutes, just to check it out… 3 hours later, I very reluctantly put the controller down once I realized what time it was. Preliminary verdict = Indeed really rad.

Thanks keyrock… picked up both Grid and F1 Race Stars. F1 RS proved to be the mario kart clone that I’ve been looking for for the PC, a lot of fun. Grid too is more than i was expecting. I thought it wasgoing to be more like Blur (based on looks) but it turns out to be more on the sim side. Might not have been such a great idea to go from playing F1 RS to Grid, as it took some time to adjust to the racing, but Grid is a solid game. Grid 2 is now on my radar because of this!

I’m glad you like GRID too, Shoganai. It’s definitely not a hardcore sim, there’s no tuning options, and the handling physics aren’t completely true to life. That said, it’s closer to the sim end of the scale than the arcade end of the scale. Most importantly, the game is just really really fun. Everything is done really well.

The game looks amazing, it’s really hard to believe it’s a 5 year old game. The cockpit view (my preferred view) is spectacular. The way the driver works the wheel and shifts, the way you get rattled around inside the car when you hit something or hit a bump, it all looks fantastic. The audio is great, from meaty engine noises, to squealing tires, to turbos kicking in, even the mostly useless spotter adds to the immersion. The game really sucks you in and makes you feel like you’re really in the middle of a heated race.

Another thing is the damage physics model. From a realism standpoint, it’s extremely lenient. You can affect the car’s handling, or even total it, but you gotta hit pretty dang hard. From a graphical standpoint, it’s amazing. I’ve never seen a game handle damage this well. Sheet metal gets scraped up and deforms. Fenders crumple in. Windshields spiderweb. Doors, hoods, and fenders fly off, and remain on the track as obstacles to drivers.

Lastly are the replays. This may seem like a minor thing, but holy shnikies does this game do replays well. Watching replays is every bit as fun as driving in the race itself, which is to say extremely fun. Though it sucks you can’t save the replays to the hard drive, they disappear once you leave the race.

In the end, all the physics, looks, sounds, and realism don’t mean anything if the game isn’t fun to play, and good gravy, this game is fun to play. I haven’t played it enough to pass final judgement on the game yet, but this is heading toward best racer I’ve ever played territory so far. And yeah, GRID 2 is DEFINITELY on my radar now. Heck, if Codies does as good a job with the follow up as they did with this, I may just have to pay full price for it rather than wait for a Steam sale. Not just to play it earlier, but because they deserve the full price for a game that good.

On a side note, I don’t know why I like typing it in ALL CAPS, it’s not an acronym, to the best of my knowledge, but I do.

Agreed. My favourite view is inside the car without the dash. The physics are done very well… I can “feel” when someone is touching my car the physics are so responsive. As you state, it’s no GranTurismo/Forza - but it is a very good mix between arcade/sim that lets me sit down, have fun, and still have to “work” at driving (drifting corners, aiming for apexes, using the brake - which is not needed in arcade racers for the most part :P).

And Codemasters is quickly becoming my racing developer of choice. Dirt, F1, and now Grid. All great games.

Rockstar Games sale on Steam:

Grab any of the 2 following games for 24$ :

  • Hitman Absolution Professional Edition
  • Carrier Command: Gaea Mission

  • Sniper Elite V2: HCE
  • Civilization V Gold Edition

i personally went for Lego and Hitman (already had civ and sleeping dogs)

Tomb Raider is 50% off on Steam this weekend. I, personally, absolutely loved the game. Well worth full price IMHO.

Knights of the Old Republic I and II on Steam weekend sale for 3.05€ and 3.39€.

Two games no RPG gamer should miss in their gaming library. For part II you should get the restoration mod, which re-introduces some planned content that has been cut from the game for release.

Amen to that.

Humble Double Fine Bundle. Pay what you want, get Psychonauts, Costume Quest, and Stacking. Beat the average (currently 8 bucks and change) and get Brütal Legend too. Pay $35 or more and get Broken Age (Double Fine Adventure) also. All games work on PC, Mac, and Linux. All games are DRM free and you get Steam keys too.

I already own Psychonauts and backed Broken Age, but I went ahead and bought this for the rest of those awesome games (not to mention I’ll now be able to play Psychonauts on Linux!). Plus, I get to support some charities and all around awesome guy Tim Schafer.

For those curious, Brutal Legend definitely has it’s shortcomings, but the iffy RTS bits people talk about only take up a certain portion of the game and the rest of it is quite enjoyable.

It’s also not terribly long if you just do the main stuff. I felt it was a lot shorter than psychonauts, but that’s just a subjective impression.

Brutal Legend was rather short (got 13 hours in it, mostly main quest, some sidequests), but entertaining. It’s a gaming tribute to metal, I just couldn’t say no to that when it arrived on PC. And I haven’t been disappointed. Yea, the RTS bit mostly sucks, but it’s a pretty entertaining game overall. Psychonauts is a real gem. Haven’t played Stacking and Costume Quest, so I got the cheap bundle so I can play them as well. I can safely and warmly recommend the humble double fine bundle.

Anyway, I wanted to ask here for another recommendation. Fallen Enchantress is on a 66% of deal on Steam right now, is it an interesting game? I mean, fantasy, turn-based and city-building (reminds me of the Age of Wonders series) do sound interesting, as long as they’re well executed.

Dishonored for ~9 euro through gamersgate but should register on steam:

http://www.gamersgate.co.uk/DD-DISHONORED/dishonored

an additional microscopic reduction can be had adding this code before checkout: elder-geek.com

Torchlight II for 6.45€
Daily Deal on Steam

Thanks for the heads up, purchased the game.

Cool, me too. Now just to be done with this current task so I can enjoy it. Btw, is the Dishonoured dlc something to buy after the game is complete or it is best to play through the first time with it installed? Or is it just utter crap and can be ignored?

I played some dishonored and dlc’s and they are additional stories with new abilities kills and such added to the game to enhance experience of the in-game world and mechanics. I perosnally will wait for GOTYedition too buy and play everything when concluded.

This is something that I don’t like with dlc’s you usually kick the games ass in few days and then you wait for months for new content which you then finish in matter of hours in the meantime you allready forget a game bit and everything you learned so you need to start all over. Games like GD where there is farming and such is ok to add additional content after few months since you can mess with lots of builds and all but this you click play, play one more time on hard (me for instance), delete, wait, wait, reinstall everything for additional 5hours gameplay, delete again…I rather wait for GOTY

Yeah, I was worried it would be like that. Is there was some standard control interface it would be one thing, but I find myself spending a good deal of time getting used to a game and once that is done, I either finish it or not. Very hard to go back to a game you finished and re-get used to it to just play a little bit more.

Might just play the main game and be done with it. It was supposed to be so good, I have just been waiting for this kind of price.

Thanks for the info.

Imo Dishonored is truly worth it’s money. One of the best FPS I played in recent years. Haven’t bought the DLC yet due to the amount of games I still need to finish. :stuck_out_tongue:

Yup, DLC does have its downsides. Still, if the game has a high replay value (and Dishonored has at least some replay value) it’s a nice bonus.

What’s funny, gamersgate.co.uk offers Dishonored a lot cheaper than gamersgate.com. Less than 9 bucks vs 15 bucks…
