I have been following grim dawn since the very beginning and bought it when it became available on steam, I have to say it is an awesome game.
I am looking to MOD Grimdawn. I will need to find an artist to help flesh it out.
Of course I still have some work to do on Torchlight 2, but that paladin just keeps killing me, so its time to consider a second project to bring that spark back.
if you are someone who would like to have icon art and portrait art seen by a lot of people, let me know. You can help give input on the mod as a whole as well, although I will personally keep the actual modding to just myself for the start at least.
Mods take time, effort, and dedication. I’m not worried if it takes as long as synergies did to fulfill (still have things left I need to do there…ugh only 3 years later right?)
TBA WHAT THE MOD WILL BE EXACTLY, but it will resemble what I did in TL2
still finalizing the details and I have to play through GrimDawn over again to actually know the game.
Holy shit you’re the guy that made SynergiesMOD? Oh man that… Is it hot in here or is just me?
I’m not here to give a helping hand but to say you got my full support, as I don’t think I’ll be able to help you much with my knowledge in modding… Or doing models and the like atm.
Hopefully you will stick with us until your project is complete, unlike TL2…
While you’re alive, here’s my biggest critic for your mod:
It’s cool that your mod got the “Best mod of the year” award for whatever website a few years ago, but you didn’t need to tell us nearly every time we had to sit through a loading screen.
Hey now, the mod is generally complete, paladin still needed to be finalized tho, and some end game extra weapons had to be added in, another tier was planned but the paladin kept putting it back… and ranger needed a bit more work on some of its ranged attacks i think, and the rework of vanilla… .oh the list would be endless to be honest.
Oh, the Message of the day on loading, ya, I can remove that… heh, thanks for pointing that out!
Oh nice… I haven’t actually played Synergies yet (still need to get more into TL2 one of these years) but someone less than a month or so ago was asking for a Synergies mod for GD. I told them to go message you or something and find out if you play GD. Don’t know if they ever did that but nice to see that you do.
Good luck finding an artist and looking forward to seeing this mod someday.
I’m nothing special guys, I taught myself how to mod on Company of Heroes and then Torchlight 2. I got lucky with Torchlight 2 in that my vision of what I wanted the game to be was a lot like other peoples. The biggest mark of my success was my absolute dedication to getting it done.
People can say Synergies is stalled and not finalized atm, I’d agree with the first part. After over 3000 hours spent working on the mod, I hit a horrible snag on the paladin and it drained me completely. It did the one thing all the other things were never able to do in the beginning, stall the mod. Synergies was never a mod that had a ‘final’ state in mind, It literally could go forever with how it was designed.
So while I thank you all for the praise and happiness, just remember if you yourself want to mod, the biggest thing is dedication. There are a ton of homeless people with skill, and skilless people with jobs. Dedication is the biggest different factor in a lot of those cases.
I’m having some issues with getting the asset manager to load, missing DLLs and I’m in the middle of my work week, but I will have some info to put up here soon.
It is the only thing in the mod that made me step back and smack my head on the wall… lol.
I made the paladin and warlock at the same time, I loved how the warlock worked, duo resources, and mage/pet class. The paladin was purely melee. Tl2 is very difficult game to make melee abilities work with diversity you find in ranged/castable abilities.
I then gave the Paladin to someone else to work on, and they had the same problem, even when they could rework it completely in their own image, it just didn’t work well.
I took it back and remade all the skills basically from scratch, again. I got them all in and working, except 1 that was the last hold over, and needed to do the balance/tweaking/wording finalizations. But its just the same thing, its so hard to get how it SHOULD be. I like the class a lot more now with how it is vs how it was, but I can never get it just right, and I’m no perfectionist at heart.
Something to do with Tl2 and melee based classes imo.
I never actually checked out the Synergies mod for Torchlight 2. What did it do? From the name I’d guess it added skill synergy bonuses like Diablo 2 had post-1.10? To be honest I didn’t really like that system, since it felt like it railroaded you down specific paths through the skill tree. I guess it could work if the bonuses were significantly more widespread…but the “ideal” situation to avoid railroading would be every skill giving some potential bonus to every other skill, which is obviously impractical in terms of design, coding, AND documenting for the player in the game’s UI.
Of course, the mod could also do something completely different (probably does, really)…in which case that comment was pretty pointless.
If there is anything we can do to help you get your feet wet with GD modding, please let us know. We’re only 4 days since the release of tools and so far the sky is the limit on what we can do. We’re poking at it still and exploring a lot. We have been given access to import 3D meshes into the game but we don’t have it working yet. We have full access to the map that came with the game, and can modify any aspect of it. We can import textures and reskin the UI without apparent limitation.
I want to make a stash modification (more columns! maybe more rows…) but I’m stupid busy. I keep saying “today!” but haven’t done it yet.
When I go to run the Asset manager it says I need to install 4 DLLs… I couldn’t find anything about this on the forums here.
I have windows10, and a new computer as of october (special modding computer actually, was going to mod ARK) so I’m just researching these DLLs to find them atm.
If you haven’t already I suggest verifying the game cache (on Steam). Worst case scenario I would uninstall and reinstall the game.
I deleted a folder I shouldn’t have, verified the game cache and 3 Gb later I could mod without issues.
Hopefully it will help you, that’s as far as I am knowledgeable when it comes to fixing issues with games on Steam.
This is great, Salan! I love Synergies for Torchlight 2! Do you have any direct modding path set for Grim Dawn, as in masteries, zones…etc? I personally would love to see you bring some unique classes into the game. Whatever it may be, I cannot wait to see your accomplishments.
I been playing TL2 a while ago and enjoyed your SynergiesMOD and was amazed by how much content and value you added to that game
I am an active Grim Dawn player and I am enjoying the game very much and looking forward to new content to be released. Therefore I am also very excited to see you in this forum.
When I first saw the modding tool was released and went to the modding section of the forum I instantly thought of you and was hoping to see you active on the forum to bring something similar to Grim Dawn as you did to TL2 with your SynergiesMOD.
As I have all ready said I am really amazed of your work and I am really looking forward to follow your work with this game
