Incoming traders should be able to offer flax goods. Then the weaver would have a supply to start making clothing than having farm/s the only means to obtain flax.
The other side of that, though, is that Flax fields seem to be remarkably productive compared to food crops. One 10x10 or larger field of Flax per year is enough to supply several fully-manned Wavers and several fully-manned Paper Makers and keep a 1000-pop town supplied with clothing, paper and books with enough clothing left over for export.
If Early Clothing is critical, you can always buy Clothing from Traders, but despite all the notifications that “(people) need clothes!” I’ve never seen that it actually affects anything but some Happiness numbers, and then only temporarily and not as severely as lack of Food or Housing does.
The point is there are other goods being offered such as gains and beans. Why not include flax also. Such a easy fix to do. You fail to mention in farming the game has diasters built in such as rot, freeze and extreme hot. Usually one after another. It’s not critical item but need in other items like in construction. I just want Crate to know they should have that in the game.
Point is that right now Flax is used for Clothing, Paper, and to build Mills. Clothing, the good specifically mentioned (and the one I at least seem to keep getting notices that my people are missing!) is available through the traders, although it is more expensive than a ‘raw’ good would be.
Having Flax available directly through the traders would also potentially make Paper available much earlier also. What would that do, if anything, to the game balance? - That’s a rhetorical question, but it has to be asked about any change at this point, this close to Final release of the game.
It was frequently mentioned as a request, and I believe they said that they were planning to provide it, but being able to ‘order’ a good from the Traders so that it would certainly be offered (maybe by the following year?) at a premium price would give us that option: order Flax, or Clothing, or Cows, or whatever we are ready/desperate for at the moment.
On the one hand, the entire Trade system is a ‘safety net’ for the in-game/on-map production to keep a town going, so I can understand them wanting to keep restrictions on it so that gamers don’t just use it instead of developing their on-map town. On the other hand, a bit of tweaking on how it works should be part of the process of Pre-Release that we are in now.
