GOG Key Status

As a Kickstarter backer, I was promised:

  1. A DRM Free version of Grim Dawn
  2. The ability to download the DRM free version directly from Crate or other sites
They have not fulfilled either of those promises.

It was supposed to have released in August of 2013 originally when I backed it, so I waited patiently for two and a half years on it after I had already gave them my money, the longest I ever had to wait for a title I had backed on Kickstarter.

It was finally released but only available on Steam, with no instructions on how to get my promised DRM free version, other than Project update #47 saying that they were working out details with Humble. Now they want me to jump through additional hoops to get what I was promised, such as having my key deactivated. I have had issues with my Steam account before when a key was deactivated due to a Valve issue, so I really do not want to go through that again. At the very least, I think they should give the Kickstarter backers what they were promised, a DRM Free version, without having to go through all the deactivation as a consolation for having to wait 2 1/2 years.

You backed a single act indie game. You’ll be getting a full blown PC title with multiple acts. Isn’t that your “consolation” for waiting 2 1/2 years?

Yeah, basically Humble has always acted as just a secondary steam key / stand-alone build redistributor that formed around the Humble Bundle sales, then branched out to offer payment processing to indies and then finally their own storefront. Steam and GOG started out as storefronts and are trying to be more primary distribution platforms with their own keys to activate the game on their service and use their features.

There are key re-sellers, with varying degrees of shadiness, that sell discounted Steam and GOG keys. The keys end up there from various sources. Some they probably get by paying very little for large numbers of keys during sales / bundle deals, then resell them a little higher once the sale is over. Other sources are probably sketchier. Like we get tons of scam email from people posing as gaming press / popular streamers requesting keys. Some scammers probably just want the game but I imagine some of those keys end up getting sold as a money-making scheme.

If you could buy games on Humble or other means and get both a GOG and Steam key, it would be a way for these key re-sellers to double their profits, paying the price for a single copy, then re-selling two keys. It would be a significant loss of revenue for GOG and Steam, while they’d end up having to support more people using their services who didn’t pay.

So I think their reasoning in not wanting people to get duplicate keys makes sense. To Humble though, it doesn’t really matter, since you can’t go on a discount key re-seller site and buy a Humble key for anything.

Man, this is all so complicated. I miss the times when you could just buy your game and it was your game and nothing else was going on. :stuck_out_tongue:

that’s basically why i backed drm free games on ks that offer linux versions… but i got burned too often. won’t do it again.

On the bar along the top of each developer post there is a button you can press to “go to the next developer post in a thread” that automatically takes you to the next relevant post in any thread that is developer related.

Just move your mouse along the top of the OP post of this thread until you see a pop-up similar to what I described.

Medierra, could you please confirm this or correct me on it?

I answered this somewhere but you already have the choice of a Steam or GOG key delivered through Humble. The physical disk will be a separate copy.

Ok, thanks for the clarification. I had read your previous answer, but it wasn’t a 100% clear to me and some others.

Ah ok, sorry that my previous answer wasn’t clear.

This actually happens ALL the time on Humble. You get BOTH DRM free and Steam. Why do people post when they have no idea what they are talking about?

I was only convinced to buy game on humble due to it stating play beta now on steam and receive drm free copy on release. i used my steam key believing that i would be able to change over to drm copy when game released.
Now im told by humble i cant change the key to GOG because i already used the key.
i feel ripped off, i dont like steam very much i always try to have DRM free versions of all my games. i am now shafted in this respect, since i cant afford nor do i believe i should have to pay again for something that was stated i would get.
is there any plan on allowing key swaps to GOG for those of us that used the steam key already?

Still waiting to hear if the GOG version is now a bastardized version that won’t connect multiplayer with steam players, which makes the game completely worthless to me.

This release is an absolute disaster. Incompetent, sloppy, and unprofessional.

Divinity play coop between the two no problem and I’ve yet to have a problem thus far with any other game.

And yet, no final response, with a month into this debacle.

So are you actually waiting to see whether the GOG version is “bastardized” or have you already decided that the release “is an absolute disaster. Incompetent, sloppy, and unprofessional” ?
Cause I can’t really tell.

In the meantime, since it’s confirmed both Steam and GOG use 1.0.0.2, why would you assume they don’t play nice together?

The way the multiplayer works right now, is through your steam friends. They need to have steam.

With GOG, since it has to go through their Galaxy service, it may not be guaranteed both services will work together.

supposedly you can deactive your Steam key and get a GOG key then. Not entirely sure who does the deactivation, Humble when you want the GOG key in exchange for the Steam key, or you.

In either case, contact Humble about it.

no .

No, it does not work that way? Or no you don’t want steam?

Just out of curiosity, why not stick with the Steam version then ?

Since you need Galaxy for online play, how is that different from using Steam ?

Mamba, I think you might be poking the Bear again on this…
