Guess they don’t want to spoil the fun. The alpha release will feel even more rewarding this way.
Looks great! I don’t mind the off-centered’ness of the UI at all - if you allow it, everything you see can add to the atmosphere and “feel” of the game.
Those of us in Alpha (when it comes out), let this bring a feeling of “uncertainty of what to expect”. If it still bothers you, speak up about it. To me though, it adds to the tension of an un-tamed land beyond the borders of what we know…
One thought on the color of the red health bar itself - have you tried changing the gradient from light to dark instead of dark to light? If it was brighter on the lower end, I would think it would make it stand out more as it gets lower.
Or do you have other indicators when your health crosses a certain threshold?
Great work guys - looking forward to more!
I have an idea that could solve in a way the lopsided issue, without changing the HUD design:
Move the buffs-debuffs etc. icons to the right side instead of the left by the heroes icon. I don’t know if thats a lot of work or not, so its up to you guys to consider it as an alternative for alpha or later patches.
In Titan Quest, when your health dropped below 25% (maybe 15%) you would hear an alarm with a heartbeat. They may pull that over to Grim Dawn. Or they may come up with their own distinctive sound.
I thought the alarm was great, I didn’t even have to look at my health most of the time. If I was about to die, the alarm would sound and I would back off to pot. Keeps your eyes more focused on the action rather then looking at health bars.
Hi folks. I apologized for going over-tone in my earlier post and i do understand the cost, resources and time on spending it on the UI. I for one believe the HUD is of equal importance as it’s the basic tool and players will be looking and relying on it for their entire gaming on Grim Dawn.
It’s best getting it right to minimize annoyances. Is it not? Anyway i’m quite pleased to see the mini-map is on top right. It looks real nice. See i’m not that unreasonable am i?. However i do have some “suggestions” to further “improvised” it. It’s just my own opinion and suggestion and i understand everyone has their own version what is “best” for them. So as developers, just pick which ever suggestion or ideas that best fit your direction. And i do believe my suggestions should be quite simple to change.

Could the mini-map instead of Circle, be Square or can we set “Transparency”?
-
I think the character portrait is un-necessary as it’s “too small” and insignificant. I’m not sure how it could be improvised perhaps the talented folks here could provide better suggestion than i am.
-
The “Green” enery bar is alittle too thin. I understand the highlight is on the Health. Perhaps just slightly decrease the thickness of the “Red” health bars and increase thickness “slightly” for the Green bar? And why should it be Green? Depicts Energy? :P. I think Blue looks more nicer.
-
Now this is my main gripe. I hope it would be improved. But who am i to request anything? Anyway… the skill/item/option “Icons” is just too SMALL. Making it slightly bigger serves a better purpose in my opinion.
Keep up the good work!
So I was able to sober up. I like HUD.
And since everything is super.
I’d rather not see a square because that doesn’t really make sense in that your character can only see so far and having a square would mean your character seeing “further” into the corners then the sides. Circle is probably more realistic and I’m more used to them when it comes to minimaps.
I agree that the energy bar is a tad small. I already suggested moving the character portrait to the middle of the UI with the health bar branching outwards to the left and the energy bar branching out to the right.
As for the skill/item/option icons I don’t really care about them because eventually you learn the hot keys to quickly open up the different menus rather then just click the icons.
We’ll have to see about future changes once the alpha gets out and people have actually played the game. Right now it’s all about looks and how part of the game might not look right to one person when it looks fine for another.
well as the game will be moddable, Im sure someone will change the HUD to suit some people, so I don’t think the HUD could be considered final in that respect, so really, nop real point complaining about the HUD, as modders probably may end up changing it anyway, so in time there will be a HUD / mini map for all
Forget about the globes, it’s fine like this. The HUD in general looks really nice now actually so well done. What I hope is that the objectives panel is optional. I’m sick of seeing it in all aRPGs nowadays. It only clutters the screen without any purpose. Keep it there if some really want it, but make it an option, or like Torchlight 2 (it disappears if you don’t track any quests in the quest log). Also, I hope the full map is back too so I can discover that fog of war! Yes, I’m a sucker for that, for such a small thing, hehe…
wouldnt that be much better? because with TQ it would get in the way of bad guys under you, though most of the fighting was to the north, and now we have freedom to rotate the camera i just think it would be cool for it to be on top, as you would have your camera facing your character rightside up the bottom will be the most limited field of view where all you see is sky ontop, maybe im just crazy or dont have the range of games or experience to tell what would work best, i also prefer the bars because they give you a more accurate at-a-glance reading and how about putting the bars to the side of the HUD or just put them with the lvl and face (why do they put in the face anyway?) in the top right. if you dont put them in the corner i would suggest moving the minimap and quests to the left because im used to focusing on the right wich is where all the mobs would come. cheers and i cant wait for the alpha to come
I think there is no gradient at all. There is just a reflection on the health bar’s glass tube at the left end. But I like your idea.
Sure the HUD is asymmetric, but I don’t find it lopsided.
I am of a utilitarian bend though, so I find the gold filigree annoyingly pointless.
Had you heard that complaint before?
I like a more utilitarian look for my UIs, not to say it isn’t beautiful, but simply keeping it simple is always better. My only complaint, if we should all it that, is that I like my mini-maps in the bottom right corner. Still, looks good and looking forward to playing the game.
You can still toggle the minimap in the lower right. We just added more options to the minimap position.
Nice! Having choices is good. Thanks to you devs for doing this!
The ‘problem’ with that is that generally speaking you walk towards the upper side of your screen, so by moving the bar there, you block ‘where you are going’ rather than ‘where you are coming from’.
As where you are going is the more important of the two, you want to see as much of it as possible, so keeping the bar at the bottom makes more sense.
Yea I would be neat if, say you are in an unlit area or it’s night time their would be more fog of war.
Adding that kind of feature would definitely add to the intensity / creepiness of the game as you see the enemies appearing out of the shadows.
Although if you DO think about the computer screen itself is fog of war since the edge of the screen acts like the edge of your vision with fog of war.
April Fool’s Day ?
seriously ?
how can we believe any news that comes out on April 1st ?
considering that that is Monday, the updates have been mostly on Sundays, I think we should take the next update with a pinch of salt, I think it should be moved, unless posting on that day is intentional?
IMO it’s not only about being lopsided but about being a bit to tall and occupying too much from the center of the screen. To my mind the mini map fits better in the upper right corner, maybe the player status bar in the upper left corner will create a more balanced HUD and free some space in the center? Like the HUD in Titan Quest had.
Otherwise thanks for the great news, I’m itching to play the alpha.
