Grim Misadventure #20: Soldier Mastery - Part 1

The only thing currently holding us up are bugs that cause underground entrances not to appear or the player to not be able to enter them and one where the boss sometimes doesn’t spawn.

The first may be fixed now, although I need to confirm it. The second one we thought was fixed but it just happened again today.

I feel these are significant enough to disrupt people’s experience playing the alpha, which would diminish the value of other feedback. People could either end up getting to certain areas at too low level because they missed content or end up too high level because a boss was missing and without being able to defeat it, they couldn’t progress forward. Plus, talk about a let down - fighting your way to the end of the alpha, stepping into the boss room and there is no boss.

There are other things that other people are working on while we wait for those two issues to be fixed but they aren’t things we’d delay alpha for.

There are features that aren’t fully working yet, skill classes that aren’t finished, UI that isn’t done and a lot of work left to write and implement the remaining quests and build out the rest of the world.

This stuff we’re not even working on right now. It will take months to complete all that and we’ll resume work on it once the alpha is out. Basically, once the alpha is out, we all start working on the content and such for beta.

med, you should add some easily fixable game crashing bugs to the alpha just to make people happy

Like Titan Quest to polish your ARPG skills since a good portion of this game is created with it in mind  Take your time Medierra most of us aren’t going anywhere so we will still be here waiting when your ready to release it to us. Albeit maybe foaming profusely at the mouth by then but still here

Yea that’s what I assumed your quote meant when it comes to features that will be added / finessed in the future.

Good luck in dealing with the bugs. Oh, and will this “showcase of mastery’s” also impact the alpha release? Like slowly releasing more info on each class before finally coming out with the alpha. Or is this merely just concepts/updates that are more or less concrete then they were before.

To all the guys at Crate.

hey guys, Just wanted to say that from everything that i have seen thus far and read about, i am very anxious to play and give some feedback. However, as you have stated i also dont want you guys to release something with game breaking problems, so I’m just gona say keep up the good work your doing and we will still be here to give feedback when the time comes. I will continue to monitor the forums on the new juicy info as it becomes available  . Keep up the great work guys

Game on -
Josh

Zantai’s Grim Misadventures are just updates on what they are doing. He’s stated this many times. In today’s post, he even states that his postings have no impact on alpha.

I finished work on the three classes for the alpha in early March. Towards the end of every two week period when it is time for another GD Misadventures, Zantai and I start panicking and trying to think of new stuff we can show. We were pretty desperate trying to think of something until I realized we’d never show the finished masteries. :stuck_out_tongue:

So, sometimes we feature new things we just finished, other times it is stuff that we just haven’t shown yet. The way development goes, there isn’t always something new every two weeks that is exciting enough to warrant showing, so sometimes we have to dig back for something.

I’ll have to resist the urge to launch Titan Quest, since I want to satisfy my hunger for hack&slash with Grim Dawn!

I have never heard of a boss not spawning, that’s an awkward bug! I’m curious about what could be causing this: what do you people at Crate think it is? Not being into game development at all, I can only suppose it could come from the randomized levels or a “quest script” related to the boss not working…“just being a n00b here, throwing ideas”.

About the Misadventures, have you ever talked about the creation process to come up with the story, the world, its design, history, etc? I would love to hear about that, but I’ll understand if you’re keeping that for the PDF.

Thanks for the transparent answers medierra, it’s really quite refreshing after my disappointing experiences on the Diablo 3 forums.

I’ve never heard of that either… It is pretty strange and it has been tough to track down. If I had to guess, I’d say that it is actually affecting all enemy spawns but that it is just not very noticeable when 1-2 regular enemies are missing from a group. I think it has something to do with the spawn proxy not being able to place the enemies on the nav mesh even though there is space to do so.

Going into depth about any aspect of development could take a long time to write up and our team isn’t large enough that we can really afford for someone to take that much time out from working on the game. So, it will have to wait for the PDF for us to talk about development in any real depth.

Thanks for the answer. While I’m not familiar with the terminology, I think I understand what you say about what might be causing the problem.
Well, best of luck with all of that and thanks for the update!

Monster boss not spawning is a weird bug, will probably take em a while to figure out.

Did you implement a dev console or something to keep track of events during the game so you can debug things easier?

just attribute it to random maps and call it a feature (no two maps are ever the same - it keeps the game and exploration fresh)

Yes but unfortunately it isn’t providing any useful info on this so far.

I was expecting Evil Medierra to show up on this thread evil laugh
Guys, where’s our love for Team Crate? Show some love <3

I can understand that, I would prefer it that way as well. Some of us are just too anxious at the moment, so it kinda clouds our judgement. It must be tough to dealing with bugs and us at the same time.

Hopefully all goes well and Alpha can be released in a nice and timely manner.

awesome! The soldier looks pretty cool, I am interested in the blademaster class

I guess part of the community is a major “bug” too, that the devs need to deal with!

Well personally i don’t care when alpha comes out. Am i exited about the game? Oh yes! But i have been waiting so long for it and i knew i would have to wait even longer when i jumped in (by pre-paying). Unfortunately some people are too anxious or lose interest but thats ok. It’ spart of the process. Lets not forget though that, just like medierra pointed out so many times, this a small company. I don’t think that eventually even the ones that can’t wait for alpha to come out, want a half baked version. Patience is a virtue!

I must say it makes me happy when I can read something like this from a developer and know exactly what they are talking about and referring to. Six years of self-teaching has not been in vein! I must say between teaching myself Programming/3D modeling/and a couple game engines my knowledge of game design has increased significantly. And I have a much higher respect for the work that you guy’s do and put into a game than I did back in the day. However, I can’t say I’ve ever experienced missing entities before, well I have but those were amateur mistakes. Good luck to you on finding and fixing those bugs.

This is my first post here (I’ve been following for a few months though) and I just bought the game a couple week ago. It sucks that you guy’s didn’t have a booth or something at GDC (then again I can understand why you didn’t), I would have stopped by and properly introduced myself. Looking forward to a great game. Keep up the good work!

@medierra, thanks for info and best of luck smashing those nasty bugs! =)

I admit I am bit impatient too (after all, GD is the most anticipated game after D3 for me), but nothing other games could not fix in the meantime. From what’s medierra saying, I don’t think we are that far from alpha anyway. =)
