Grim Tools and Crate

Grimtools is pretty much just when you reach level 100

Not really.
I am a causal player but have all most 1000 hours invested in the game, But i have no idea on which devotions I need to use when trying a new character so I always look at Grim tools builds for guidance.

I think even Zantai use GT. :zantai:

Everyone uses it differently. I always do my skills/devotions in GT calc first before I start a new character, even though I’ve played for years now. Yes, I can do without it if necessary, but I just prefer to use GT first, especially if I’m trying out skills/devotions I haven’t used before.

Don’t forget that GT is not just a build calculator, but many other tools as well like Map, Monster and Items DB , Checklist. Which combined are super useful especially as you help someone get into GD and give them needed reference and help with their builds.

We as GD players are pretty lucky to have such tools available. For example, TQ although released years before GD still doesn’t have any 3rd party tools support of same quality level. Actually the TQ calculator is by a mile not as good as GD one.

Yeah, i’m not exactly a veteran but i have like 3 lv 100 chars… When i have to create a new one i start by toying around a bit with GT trying to see if there are good synergies between a skill i like, the other mastery and the gear, then look if and how easily i can cap resistances, reach 3k oa and da etc etc…then if i’m satisfied i actually create the char and start playing

Grim tools is very valuable resource. One of the things people are always surprised is that is third party tool and it’s not on the site. But I can see if there’s problem with this site hosting it. Anyway, hopefully we will see the situation be resolved soon.

Grimtools didn’t exist a few years back and people still played just fine including both new and old players. It’s only down for roughly a week so I think a lot of people are overreacting to this.

Trying to find a new calculator online I found something called ‘‘grim calc’’ but it is rly old,it goes to lvl 85,so I think even all those years back, people still had this:D

I can relate to this. I’m not the type of people who have the brain to understand all of the mechanic/ stat or everything in this game, so I just enjoy it however I can but then at around 75 and up, I have to rely on GT to finish up my build/ survive. So without proper way for people like me to get with endgame, we will get frustrate and start hating the game :stuck_out_tongue:

Grimcalc only did skills and devotions and had a sort of monster database (though it wasn’t easy to read). We had gracefuldusk for an item database as well but grimtools has since improved on that as well. Same for Maphack, spawn points for Nemeses had to manually be checked/marked for instance.

We never had a proper build calculator, monster database, checklist or pet database. Everything else grimtools has vastly improved on.

Right, but I am fairly sure grimtools main use is the talent calculator, thats what all the guides link etc,and that grim calc covered it well

You can’t really plan an end game character around just skills and devotions :woman_shrugging:. Grimcalc didn’t do everything.

It does offer you random build ideas though which is nice. Even if they are a bit wacky at times.

Grimcalc was abandoned before AoM got very far in testing iirc. Stormcaller was offered the opportunity to keep it updated early same as Dammit does with GT, but he wasn’t interested.

IIRC and from the above quote, I think Grim Tools came along and Stormcaller saw it was better, and decided not to spend more time on Grim Calc.

I think people don’t understand the time and effort it takes to develop, test, deploy, and maintain these sorts of tools; and that person (modder/tool creatr) get tired of it as their interest in maintaining it wanes - not to mention all the people that grumble about it not being updated and demanding it be updated.

After a while it’s not worth it, aka no incentive, to maintain it.

Of course when you create tool/mode you put hedgehog in your pants

Cause you have to updated with new patch and figure way to maintain it. Plus people that creates such things have passion for the game. But with the time, their project became chore, obligation rather than hobby. But because of their dedication we are grateful to the people that created it and spend their time helping others!

Grimtools is very important for player retention. Casual “start and go” players don’t need it, hardcore vets who know every item, devotion bonus and monster spawn probably don’t need it that much either. Everyone in between can make a great use of it.
I can only say for myself, GT is vital for my gameplay. I’m a builder kind of guy and i can’t imagine my GD day without optimizing the existing build or thinking about the new one and for that, with my knowledge of the game, GT is irreplaceable.

This week i came back from vacation to find GT down. I barely played. There is no overreaction around, in my opinion. It’s pretty hard to overestimate GT.

I saw Grim Tools was down on Sunday(?) and I’ve still played it a good bit everyday since, even leveling up 2 characters (Battlemage and Oppressor). So, while it’s definitely not hard to overestimate GT, and it is a marvelous tool at that, it certainly isn’t required to PLAY the game. When it’s back up and Dammit has had a great vacation, it’ll be wonderful to have it back. In the meantime, I’ve got another 40 levels to go on my Battlemage. See you in the game.

I’ve been pretty much spamming the refresh button ever since it went down, hoping that it would come back up. Yea, I need it that much. The majority of links and utilities in the community also go to GT, so imagine. I was thinking and realizing the other day how much better GD is with GT. I hope it comes back soon!

Yeah. It’s not like i never use GT generally, i’d argue compared to other tools, it’s one of the few when i use it regularly, i guess even more than GI, due with the 1.1.4.0 QoLs added i don’t use / need GI anymore. So the only other “tool” which i use way more than GT and GI is the Rainbow-Color Tool. The visibility of Stats is a huge improvement with that… and that would be one of the things which i truly might miss and need besides autocomponentpickup.

I mean i get why a part of the Community dig this stuff, but i’m more the type of gamer who prefer the “learning by doing” way. And due Builds are often a work of iteration, i prefer to try and iterate ingame instead than outside of the Game merely based on numbers with theorycrafting. Also i guess i will sue GT more rarely, due i mostly used GT for Item-Database for Components and stuff, due i found it easier to filter it out. But now with the searchbars added it’s easier ingame IMHO.

Maphack is cool sometimes, but in that case again i prefer to learn the world and remember where the stuff is instead of killing the gameflow everytime by pause and checking stuff on the maphack.

Build Calculator, like i mentioned, i prefer ingame, though the only exception is when i sometimes check sometimes my devotion-route, and / or try builds made by the community (though only 2 so far)… so yeah.

For me it’s a useful / helpful tool, but unlike some other QoL’s i don’t really need it to enjoy the game…
