Hello, I am trying to test out some new builds that could facetank all the Celestials despite the recent physical resistance changes but I am running into some problems duplicating and copying characters.
I deleted my game. I started it up with no characters. My characters were not synched to the cloud. When I created a new one it would appear in the numbers folder in the steam directory. However, when I place my other characters there alongside the new one they don’t appear as selectable in the game. I can see them in GrimStash. I also downloaded a template character (before I used my template character) and he also did not show up. I tried placing all these save files into all the folders - the one in My Documents and the one in the main game directory but to no avail.
Am I missing something? I can’t seem to find any solutions or people experiencing similar problems.
This is the backstory… Before I deleted the game and reinstalled it I sort of could duplicate one character of mine. I suffered from a strange artefact - a character that I somehow cursed into existence when I was first learning about duplicating characters. He wouldn’t show up anywhere in the files but would always be playable in-game. You couldn’t edit him or get rid of him. If you deleted him in-game he would just appear again when you refreshed the menu. If you renamed him in GrimStash he would still remain while a duplicate of him with the new name would be created. After much toil trying to fix this weirdness this character appeared to become broken - when you clicked to play with him a new game would start instead and a new character with the same name would be created at level one.
I sort of managed to fix this by disconnecting from the cloud. I think the problem was tied to me incorrectly renaming the duplicated hero so I named him back to his original name using GrimStash and then deleted his file which was created following the renaming. This sort of got rid of him but if I turned cloud storage back on he would reappear as if nothing happened. Either way after trying all this I noticed my heroes stopped duplicating properly and I can’t import them which is where I started the post from.
you can’t copy paste chars into the “cloud” folder/steam save folder, only the documents folder
cloud/steam save folder chars must be imported via the ingame function
if you’re duping chars it probably means you did the custom mode trick, and if it’s then causing issues, probably just don’t do this
when you’re downloading chars, it’s important the folder structure is correct
*i’m not saying you necessarily doing it wrong, just mentioning it because i’ve seen that be the very issue several times
seems like it might depend on the method of extraction, so some people/systems need to pull the char folder manually a layer deeper than others that just extract it “as is” straight in the right structure (guessing it depends on the tool used to extract the zip?)
either way it must be the _name folder that is used without a prior nor another name sub folder
so it’s “_name/player.gdc(and world folders)” that goes into the save/main folder; and always the save → main folder
if you then insist on playing with steam cloud on (Grim Dawn ingame setting), then you must import the doc saves like this
Alright. My issue was that I did not use the in-game menu checkbox when it came to disabling my character cloud storage. I always only used the steam menu check box and I didn’t realize there was another one in the game. Perhaps never unchecking that box is what caused all my problems and the crazy artefact character that could not be deleted. After unchecking that box I can now see the characters that I placed into the My Documents folder (previously I could not).
