When I start the game it takes 2min to the first menu screen and then another 5 min to load the game. The game reasonably quickly gets to this point 
and then stays there for a long time.
Looking at the computer stats not much seems to be happening. Is this an area that could be optimized to make the game load faster and therefore more accessable and enjoyable?
Yes, to me the game itself loads reasonably fast, but the saved game load time takes forever and normally from that point you showed in the image, I usually load the saved game and then go to the kitchen to grab a coffee or something, going back to the PC and still loading … its painful.
I have a Ryzen 9 5950X ( 16 core processor ), 64GB RAM (DDR4 3600Mhz), 980Pro nvme SSD, so the issue can’t be from this hardware, the only thing more dated I have on my system is the GPU which is an RTX 2070 Super.
I must say that the saved game in question is from a large map, with around 1300 pop, and a large city spread in 3 sections, but even with this in mind I think there must be some kind of better optimizations to me made before launching version 1.0.
If I load an early game or a new game, the speed is not an issue.
I use Intel 10 core/20 tread i9-10900K overclocked CPU, 32GB of RAM, SSD drives that reads /writes ~350MB/sec and the same GPU, the nVidia RTX2070 Super. Lowest speed on all motherboard components are 3200. WI-FI 6 ~700MB/s wired. Our experiences of the loading times of the game are very similar.
