I had not realized it until it was too late but it seems the market needs bricks to maintain. We don’t get any notification if required materials are missing and you have to wait for bricks to show up from a trader before you can get any because the brick yard isn’t available until tier 3. I think only the tier 2 market needs them, so it would seem you won’t want to upgrade markets to tier 2 until you can produce bricks in abundance to cover the regular maintenance. My feedback here is that we need something in the UI to tell us of the maintenance requirements for a building at present as well as upon upgrade so we can decide if we can afford the long term cost of that upgrade.
Buying bricks to upgrade the market to T2 early is one of those little tricks that usually makes sense as it will double the market income. I have never progressed so slowly to T3 that maintenance has become an issue, but then you could just buy more than 50 bricks the first time to cover for that eventuality. I honestly don’t see a big issue with this.
If you’re new and still trying to figure out how to fend off all those raiders, wolves and bears (oh my) then getting to tier 3 may take a while. What I’m saying here is that the cost to upgrade is made clear before you commit to it, but the cost to maintain a building, any building, is not made clear in any case (before or after the upgrade) so you can’t be sure what materials you will need over time. Some players don’t like to rush the town hall upgrade as this seems to spur more problems, like rats and more raiders. Having a well balanced town may be more appealing to some of us before upgrading. The struggles in maintaining such a balance at tier 1 or tier 2 for a prolonged period of time is how we decide what buildings might be placed in the wrong tier, or that perhaps certain materials should not be required to maintain a building. In other words, if bricks becomes a maintenance cost then we need to be able to make bricks earlier. I don’t really understand why making bricks has to be a tier 3 building when bricks were one of the earliest of mans construction materials.
You need EVERY material required to build a building to also repair a building, just in smaller amounts.
As for notification, there should be an exclamation point beneath your bricks icon at the top. This IS your notification.
Bricks are a difficult item to procure from traders, just like iron (which can also be used prior to t3 when you can manufacture it.) So buy it up when you get the chance.
I wasn’t aware maintenance would trigger that ! icon as well. I always thought this was just telling me that a build requirement wasn’t met. Sometimes I select to build multiple items and don’t have enough gold for all of them for instance but I know more is on the way so I just wait. With bricks, I just figure I’ll meet the requirement eventually when I can buy some but didn’t realize it was a building maintenance issue.
Being basically still in Beta level of development (or maybe Beta +), there is still a lot of information in the game that is withheld or not obvious to the player.
This being the third “Beta Test” game I’ve participated in in the last 3 years, I can tell you that is not unusual, so much so that I’ve come to refer to the “Gotcha!” phase of game development, where a certain percentage of the information required to play the game well and smoothly is missing because the details are still being ironed out.
I understand that they’ve added a bunch of information packets and improvements to Version 8 - hopefully, those will also be accurate and updated as the mechanics they are describing change . . .
I understand the differences in Beta or early access. I make mention of my concerns because this is the phase where they can still be considered and addressed.
Did NOT mean to disrespect or denigrate your concerns: as mentioned, I, too, think there is a lot of information ‘missing’ in the game’s presentation as it now stands and hope/expect that to be corrected as the development process continues.
As it stands now, I feel that I am as much exploring the game and its mechanics as I am exploring the map in each game . . .
