Moats or trenches, filled with water
which could be placed exactly like roads.
Instead of the movement speed boost for roads, they could have a slow effect on move speed.
Could have the moat as an upgrade option for the tier 2 of a basic trench, with better slow effect.
Should be easy to set up for a small defensive measure and for looking pretty.
