Thanks for the technical advice (2) above Davood. Will probably fairly soon “succumb” to test if the otherwise IT savvy “gray matter” in my cerebral cortex etc. can figure out these exact differences and what to do with them… lol Although it goes without saying that it’s much preferable that the far more GD-file & data-knowledgeable creator of Legion did the update/fixing himself! So wake up dear Deathbit, you awol-like imitation of the Brothers Grimm’s “Sleeping Beauty”!
PS: And thanks too for your very likable sarcasm (1) i.e. “for your 5 FPS enjoyment” … in the full Grimmest DAIL option.
However is not so much the quite possible serious lag occurrence in that particular version that bothers me personally, but rather the fact that it’s still in need of some much needed tweaking & down tuning (as others have commented on in your own DAIL thread btw), specifically with regard to the POTENTIAL extreme difficulties of dealing with hordes of draining + summoning cultist baddies in cramped areas … and then the fact that it’s simply very SIIIIIIIIILLY game play to have 4 (even in your DAIL option “B” of Grimmest which you claim is only 2 x spawn!!!) quest-specific bosses here there and everywhere, like for instance 4 x Milton Hart and so on.
anyways. what is wrong with grim legion? i dont see why it should stop working other than gameengine.dbr needing a fix. thats probably all that is needed imho.
he renamed everything so that youd have to make a char locked to grim legion to play which also means it will survive crate updates to classes/devotions (good design)
Roger that … With regard to what is actually wrong with Legion in 1.004HF1, well it’s just OCCASIONALLY acting funny … or bad!, even fairly early on with a new character. (Better try it yourself rather than me writing a little “novella” about it! lol). But since it’s creator Deathbit himself made all versions immediately hidden for download on Nexus upon release of 1.004, giving the short reason: “Not up to date!”, I naturally assume that the various annoyances / discrepancies simply MUST be of a rather serious nature, and likely more and more apparent the further you advance in the game!
Fair enough … you are after all a very taxed & busy DAIL-man
As stated earlier I will POSSIBLY try my luck with some “diff tools” during the weekend. Will let you know of my findings when I’m done…
Thanx for latest version Corsefied. Particularly as I’ve been messing around with an older version (1.1) the last few days to see/test if it is indeed possible for an “outsider” – meaning someone not at all privy to the workings & details of the original creation of this here mod – to make it more compatible with GD 1.004HF1+
Well at present my initial non-binding answer to that one is… it’s not!!!
Most glaring reason: After having tried and failed for nearly an hour to properly rebuild the 1.1 mod after altering just 2 files i.e. “balancingadjustment_challengemode_enemies01” + “gameengine.dbr”… it finally dawned on me that you needed all them darn TEMPLATES included in the “records” subdir for a build to correctly include the 2 new altered files (otherwise Assetmanager.exe simply just repack the original files). So I used the 1.004HF1 templates especially since I don’t have the ones Deathbit used to build the mod with. Now I don’t know if Deathbit made a truckload of his own custom templates or whatever … but A) my new test-build had a smaller size than his even though it shouldn’t have!!! considering that in my 1st test-build I only changed a few digits and thus did not at that point include all the new lines in the Crates’ expanded gameengine.dbr, and B) first and foremost the game suddenly now ran slower than a snail on PEDs?!
See personally I hadn’t previously experienced 98% all the bad thingies many users are biaaaatching about 1.004 i.e. MUCH MUCH lower fps and recurring crashes … but now I suddenly did!!! My own initial conclusion then: Legion (and possibly other non-updated mods made for 1.003 for that matter) – and please GD modding veterans correct me if I’m totally wrong – runs with very decent FPS in 1.004 albeit with obvious “discrepancy” issues considering all the various things and settings updated & expanded in 1.004 if NOT altered! However if you try to rebuild said mod(s) with anything other/newer than the creator’s own templates OR the templates for the allegedly much more faster & fluently running 1.003 they originally were made with… well using extreme graphically & gpu demanding mods like Deathbit’s in 1.004 will very likely make the fps drop faster than Hugh Hefner’s pants!
PS: So if nobody here is the wiser on this debacle, well then what basically remain for me to test in the near future is to rebuild an altered version of this mod with the default 1.003 templates from my GOG version and see if that runs smoothly in 1.004HF1 … but even if it eventually does, don’t expect it to be using (or using properly!) much of anything mentioned in the lengthy 1.004 changelog then!
I managed to get it to work (at least I haven’t run into any issues) with 1.0.0.4HF1.
What I did:
Rename Grim Legion.arz to database.arz (this is because AssetManager will not extract .arz that aren’t named database even though it has the functionality to do so).
Open AssetManager and change Working and Build paths to the Grim Legion folder. Close AssetManager (to be safe).
Open AssetManager and Extract Game Files, you want to extract your newly named database.arz in your Grim Legion database folder. (this extracts records and the much needed templates.arc)
After extraction is complete change Working and Build paths back to your Grim Dawn directory and close it.
Edit the files either with AssetManager or BeyondCompare (I used this) and save and rebuild once edited.
Compare the size of the newly built Grim Legion.arz with the renamed one, if it’s larger the changes stuck and you can now delete the old one and test in-game.
My rebuilt Grim Legion.arz is 41,240KB which is 5KB larger than the unedited version. Note: I did copy over the new stuff Crate added to balancingadjustment_challengemode_enemies01.dbr and gameengine.dbr, as well as extended the range of Aura of the Falcon to match the 30 meters of other auras (I’m not sure if he missed it or intentionally left it alone).
PS: I have no idea what I’m doing and I’m amazed it actually worked.
Well congratulations then Xendhaius!!! … despite claiming to have “no idea what your are doing”!!! LOL
Well actually you do (know what you are doing) HeHe… even though you obviously also see yourself as a GD modding-noooobeeee much like I see myself … and your operation procedure sounds almost virtually identical to mine. What I don’t get from your above description though, is any mentioning of templates meaning how exactly you managed to get the 1.004FH1 Assetmanager.exe to rebuild the thing WITHOUT them darn proper templates (and thus those countless “missing template” errors in red) as I described in length in my above post???
The pack i uploaded 1.1b is working fine with my updated Grim dawn version.
I haven’t done a single thing to it other than extract that folder and put it in mods . so i don’t get all these workarounds
Well I’ve NOT have time to test your wonderful upload yet, as I’m not at home … and don’t exactly feel quite ready to get fired due to playing the mucho addictive GD at my workplace! HeHe
Seriously though initially I don’t get why you AT LEAST don’t experience these “missing tag” etc. descriptions of malfunctioning particularly if playing with a older character and accompanying stash??? And secondly, as you properly know Crate themselves explicitly ask modders to UPDATE their 1.003 (or earlier) mods with 1.004’s new expanded “gameengine.dbr” in their changelog … and as mentioned many times the creator Deathbit himself immediately hid all downloadable versions of Legion on Nexus upon release of 1.004HF1 citing: “Not up to date”!!! … PRESUMABLY due to rather severe incompatibility issues.
Following my method provided me with the Templates.arc. Which I guess is what you’re referring to? Every time I rebuild the mod I receive no errors of any kind.
I’m currently messing with it trying to remove Grim and Grimmest (without breaking everything) from it as that shit kills my CPU.
Also, I really do have no idea what I’m doing, I’m just guessing at shit and praying nothing breaks <.<
Do you happen to have a version without Grim and Grimmest? It would be nice to have in case I can’t remove/alter it on my own.
Alrighteeee … then! Possibly it has something to do with the 1.1b version (the one Corsefied uploaded today anyway) being a 8.18 mb rar as opposed to my own lastest version the slightly older 1.1 only being a 5.41 mb rar, cause as I stated earlier our procedures are virtually identical and I certainly never did get ANY templates.arc unpacked after renaming that version to database.arz…
Anyway since I haven’t been home to to neither test nor mod this original 1.1b verison of Legion yet… and just to be 100% on the same wavelength: Even with your unpacked templates.arc you are also absolutely positive you didn’t get ANY of those aforementioned “missing templates” or other sort of templates errors (as well as any specific errors related to your new expanded gameengine.dbr file) displayed in red in the Assestmanager’s window while it took it’s merry time rebuilding the arz in 1004HF1???
And my 2nd question is this: Since you rather surprisingly don’t mention any FPS drops in your successful 1.004HF1 rebuild of Legion specifically COMPARED to how it originally ran on your end in Crate’s much smoother 1.003 version of GD, well I was at first just about to ask you if you own one of them kickaZzz monster rigs with state of the art water-cooling and nvidia’s latest gtx 980 … but ehhhh apparently you don’t! lol since you now state you wish to tone the grimmest features (for cpu/gpu precautionary reasons), exactly like myself! But did you in fact nevertheless notice a substantial drop on your machine in FPS when getting swarmed by enemies from Deathbit’s version run in 1.003 compared to your rebuild running on 1.004FH1???
And my final question … for now … in this Legion rebuild regard is this: I desperately tried in my earlier (messed-up) work to find a quick-fix for reducing the number of quest-specific bosses from 4 to 1 (and instead having them replaced them with say 2-3 RANDOM named lesser champions/heroes) without going through all Deathbit’s so called “proxy” related files, since I simply find the GD gameplay to become outright siiiiillllyyyy!!! with 4 of every nasty like for instance 4 x Milton Hart, and thus in most if not all recent incarnations of “grimmmest” – like in DAIL’s – 4 x Milton Hart notes and 4 x Milton Hart amulets and so on and so on!
So have you been able to found a fix for THIS particular problem in your own downscaling endeavours Xendhaius??? And if so please share how???
PS: Specifically I noticed that in Crates original “balancingadjustment_challengemode_enemies01.dbr” you have these last four lines:
spawnChampionMaxAdj,2,
spawnChampionMinAdj,0,
spawnMaxAdj,1,
spawnMinAdj,0,
now I recall in Deathbit’s grimmest Legion version 1.1 they were changed to:
-spawnChampionMaxAdj,4,
-spawnChampionMinAdj,2,
-spawnMaxAdj,4,
-spawnMinAdj,2,
any idea what these parmeters exactly do/control by themselves or in correlation to “proxy” (see the very imperfect GD modding guide pdf) related monster files and what happens if you change both sets of MaxAdj & MinAdj to say all 2’s???
PS2: Lastly I sincerely hope you do somehow manage to downscale Legion’s grimmest features a BIT, without breaking anything … and therefore as such I will probably put my own much slower/time-constrained rebuilding efforts on hold (as I see no apparent reason as to why 2 different people should basically be doing the very SAME thing with the SAME goals!) and if successful hope you would like to share it here with the GD community.
That could be why you are encountering issues. I modified the 1.1b version as it’s the only one available to download and had zero issues, no missing templates or anything of the sort.
I’ve no experience with previous versions of the mod as I originally stuck to DAIL and wanted to try something new. As for performance in general, it’s always been rather bad with and without mods due to shit pathfinding that seems to be unchanged from Titan Quest.
How I fixed the spawns:
For starters ‘balancingadjustment_challengemode_enemies01.dbr’, ‘proxypoolequation_01.dbr’, and ‘limited_unlimited.dbr’ do absolutely nothing as far as I can tell. To actually change the spawns I opened ‘gameengine.dbr’ -> Proxy Info -> change everything here to match the unmodded ‘gameengine.dbr’.
I highly recommend using BeyondCompare to do all of what I’ve done, as it’s as easy as opening the modded and unmodded files side by side, moving everything missing from the unmodded ‘gameengine.dbr’ to Grim Legion ‘gameengine.dbr’ and overwriting everything related to spawns. Granted, this doesn’t fix everything (Salazar’s room is a deathtrap) but it’s the broadest fix. You still will need to check each named/quest/boss enemy proxy and adjust their spawns if you want everything fixed (I doubt I’ll do this unless the encounter is a serious blow to performance and/or I cannot win the encounter).
As for releasing the work I’ve done, if Deathbit doesn’t pop up and let everyone know what the status of the mod is in a few days I may upload it. I got it working for personal use and would rather avoid hi-jacking his work.
Thanx for the now updated “How-I-fixed-the-spawns” info … and again good luck with your overall efforts to eventually make Legion substantially more CPU & GPU friendly (BTW in this regard did you happen to notice on the DAIL thread today that Davood’s DAIL implementation of the original “Grimmest” mod apparently runs terrible – at least in certain areas of GD – even on an good I7 with a SLI GTX 970!!!)
As for the unfortunately still awol Deathbit … well he doesn’t appear to ever have read any version of the milestone & bestselling “ETIQUETTE” (The Complete Guide to Modern Manners) does he now? lol
Meaning obviously I’m also all in for respecting etc. (including not re-releasing it in a new form without some sort of permission and so on) another man’s obvious hard work , but imho Deathbit has have ample time and opportunity to either answer just a fraction of the many requests and posts both here and on Nexus or else make some sort of other proclamation about his future intentions with Legion, practically ever since he very suddenly decided to disable and hide all downloads immediately upon release of 1.004HF1 citing: “Not up to date!”. Period!!!
So while I do understand your reservations and thus maybe choosing to not share your hopeful fixing of Legion with the GD community, on the other hand I do maintain that I really simply cannot see you will be stepping all over Deathbit’s toes by doing so … especially if for WHATEVER reason he chooses to remain totally silent for very much longer!
In regards to Grimmest, to my knowledge it has nothing to do with the implementation in DAIL but rather the base mod itself not accounting for certain areas being far more resource intensive than others and not reacting well with such heavy spawn alterations. Almost every complaint I’ve seen in regards to Grimmest on PCs with specs that completely destroy this game involves Cultists and their spell spamming.
As for releasing my work…
~!!!~DISCLAIMER~!!!~
I have no idea what I’m doing and the work I’ve done to bring compatibility up to 1.0.0.4HF1 (it’s compatible with 1.0.0.4HF2) and the complete removal of Grimmer and Grimmest has worked fine for me. I can’t say it will work for others and there will be no support from me as my knowledge as to what could be wrong is limited at best. I take no credit for the mod or the changes made to the mod. All credit is reserved exclusively to the mod author Deathbit and to the authors of any and all mods merged into Grim Legion.
I edited the mod with the sole intent of having a 1.0.0.4HF1 compatible version of the mod for my own personal use and as such am providing it in it’s current state with no support by request. I have no desire to continue support or take over Deathbit’s hard work. Any and all adjustments I continue to make to the mod will NOT be released publicly.
~Patch Notes~

provides)
[li]Completely removed Grimmer and Grimmest[/li]
[li]Modified championMin & championMax to preserve difficulty[/li](This effects how many champions can spawn. Values are slightly higher

[li]Reverted Damage scaling to 100% (was 80% to account for [/li]increased spawns from Grimmest)
[li]Reverted Experience equation to vanilla values[/li]
[li]Reset camera settings to default as the increase zoom-out only makes[/li]sense with Grimmer and Grimmest
[li]Merged and modified all 1.0.0.4 content [/li]*Removed level requirements from equipment and new affixes
*Changed the new Devotion Shrine to combat
*Merged enemy spawn proxies from DAIL-NG(No Grimmest) to have the

This download shall be removed immediately if it violates forum rules and/or if Deathbit returns to continue work on Grim Legion!
~Installation~
Extract the Grim Legion folder within the archive to your Grim Dawn mods directory.
(Also either read the Patch Notes in this post or within the archive. Always read patch notes.) ~Before playing~
Back up character files you do not want to lose and/or break, the new content is not fully tested and I have no idea what is and isn’t broken.
~UPDATE~
I have released an updated patch that completely removes Grim and Grimmest and implements the new content from Grim Dawn 1.0.0.4. This will be the last publicly available patch I will release.
Should Deathbit remain MIA, I may reconsider as I’d prefer to not see this amazing mod be abandoned.
Thanx Xendhaius! Looking forward to testing & comparing your work to both the original and my own alpha fixing attempts (in this regard I MIGHT “accidentally” have found a sort of breakthrough with regard to an alternate and easier way to lower the spawning … but more on this subject later in the week!) tomorrow probably.
Thumbs up for your noble “DISCLAIMER” too btw!
PS: With regard to DAIL, it was properly just poor formulation on my behalf above as I never intended to imply that the failure of even a good I7 + SLI GTX 970 was in any way Davood’s fault in the way he compile his mega mod compilation, but rather that it just goes to show that practically all incarnations of heavy-to-maximum spawning mods (whether they are called Grimmest, Grimmer or Legion or whatever) all have that in common that they eventually over-stresses even the best CPUs & GPUs … and most often exactly as you state: in areas with loads of spell-casting cultists!
You’re welcome and I’m interested in your proposed alternative. Though I fear it’s a bit late for me to to utilize it
I’ve finished editing every single spawn proxy except for devotions as they seem fine and should be as challenging as they are. I have updated my post with a new download that has compatibility with 1.0.0.4HF1 and has Grimmer and Grimmest completely removed.
I also merged the new 1.0.0.4 content, removed the level requirements on all new gear, changed the new Devotion Shrine to combat and activated it for all difficulties, merged the new enemy proxies from DAIL NG for proper level scaling (I couldn’t figure out how to edit the level scaling myself and I’m impatient towards playing the new content, I’ll eventually compare files to see how it’s done), and I’ve not changed champion spawn chance or spawn sizes as the content is new to me and I want to know how they are normally before determining if they need to be altered.
Do note however that I will not be releasing this patch (I merely meant to show it can be done without breaking anything, in case you’d like to update it for your own use). I’ve completed my original goal of having a compatible version that doesn’t wreck my CPU and released it, any new edits and updates I’ve done/plan to do are for personal use.
Thank god for Beyond Compare 4, it made editing everything so much easier. If I had to do all the things I did using AssetManager I wouldn’t have bothered and would probably have a bullet hole in my head .
I see your meaning now in regards to spawning mods, I misinterpreted your original comment as a slight against DAIL exclusively. My apologies for the confusion.
UPDATE: Crate has released version 1.0.0.4HF2 and I’ve tested and confirmed that my released patch for Grim Legion is fully compatible with it.
Thanx for the update. The “FINAL” update I see, sigh sigh … Ehhhhh do you take bribes by any chance??? HaHaHaHa
Naaaah seriously matey I fully understand your POV … or I at least I’m trying my hardest pretending to since I sincerely appreciate what you have already shared.
Unfortunately I’ve not had the the time …yet … to neither thoroughly test my own hinted-at “accidentally” discoveries regarding spawning (and I’m pretty much stumbling just as much around in the Dark, lol, as yourself when it comes to understanding Deathbit’s intricate changes and the Crate files hard-to-decipher overall symbiosis with one another, so personally I won’t make anything public on this subject of spawning until/unless I’m more than 86% certain of it’s non-random/non-rng effect compared to the original), nor even testing your fiiiiiiine “home work”! … and probably will not until Monday, at the earliest!
Aye sadly this is how über busy the rest of this week looks for yours truly, but I do however occasionally have 5-10 min to check this here dead awesome forum, and thus the 1st question that springs to mind (without having tested it you, mind you!) after having read your latest updated alpha-patch description is this:
PRIMARILY DID YOU REMEMBER TO ADJUST THE EXPERIENCE CURVE BACK UPWARDS AS YOU NOW CLAIM TO HAVE 100% COMPLETELY REMOVED “GRIMMER” & “GRIMMEST” FROM LEGION (as Deathbit says in his mod introduction he lowered it 40-60%! BTW he also lowered overall damage about 20% on both sides due to “a lot more fighting going on” in his original mod)???
