I’d like to offer constructive criticism about the main/original post. Nowhere in the first post does it state the current version of Grim Dawn that RoT is compatible with. It says “RoT version 0.7.1” but that is meaningless.
Context: I basically parachuted on this thread following an old link, I see that the original post is from October 2016, but I have no idea whether the mod is still maintained and up-to-date. Showing “Compatible with Grim Dawn version [numbers] from [date]” would really help users like me know right away that the mod has not been abandoned.
Also, the patch notes website only lists up to patch 0.6.2, so it’s out of date.
Lastly, to download the version 0.6.5, there is a Google Drive link that hosts a torrent file. This is unnecessary: you can just provide the torrent’s magnet link, which the user can directly copy and paste onto their torrent client, bypassing the need for Google Drive.
Hope the feedback is useful, and thanks for making the mod! Too bad I can’t play it (because I don’t have Forgotten Gods expansion and don’t want to risk buying it just to play the mod and find out I don’t like it [or Diablo 2 for that matter]).
The OP from 2016 in this thread shows updated early this month, therefore it stands to reason the mod is current and being supported. Scroll up from the bottom of this thread where my message is and see an update just days ago.
RoT is compatible with the very latest version of GD that is available on steam. The current version of RoT is 0.7.1.0, and is regularly updated. Yes you need both expansions, mainly because the second expansion adds in features like teleporting and other stuff that RoT needs to function. It would have been too much hassle to support multiple versions of the mod.
The mod is great, so if you did like Diablo 2, then this mod will be up your street, so worth getting forgotten gods to play the mod for.
… that’s not quite right! I downloaded the Open Beta yesterday (a good 25 GB of data) and installed it. And tomorrow evening at 19:00 it starts!
What you meant referred to the Closed Beta, you had to have pre-ordered…
@ Nantes
It’s really worth getting Forgotten Gods because Reign of Terror is great, better than the original Diablo 2 LoD!
Grim Dawn is currently at version 1.1.9.1, and the mod Reign of Terror is currently at version 0.7.1.0, but is constantly being revised.
Only yesterday I was able to kill Duriel, the final boss of Act 2, relatively easily without taking a single hit. The cave is a lot bigger in the mod RoT, so you have more possibilities to avoid the monster, and it seems that a high level against cold damage (maximum + 25 in my case) helps to avoid being slowed down. Moreover, a good speed (***+ 45***) is not harmful either, because I was basically a lot faster than Duriel.
Ergo, if you used to like Diablo a lot, you’ll love RoT. I played Diablo and Diablo 2 LoD for many years before turning my back on Blizzard since Diablo 3, and I’m very excited for the open beta of Diablo 2: Ressurected, but whatever happens, I’m guaranteed to play RoT for a very long time, as the repetition aspect due to the extremely high number of characters cannot be dismissed …
I don’t think I will bother trying the open beta of Diablo 2, even then, 25 gig is a lot to download. Especially when many aspects of the game will remain unchanged. that is my key problem with it. I guess if they did change stuff, it would anger a lot of fans, and it will turn into another W3:R disaster. Still I really wish that many QoL improvements are in the game. And now with limited modding support, then many mods will not happen.
Anyway, RoT is awesome, I gave it a rest for a while back, but boy, many things have changed, new stuff that diablo 2 will never include, like world bosses, hidden ubers that can kick you hard if you aren’t ready for them. Mythical versions of many set items and more. more end game content. The list goes on.
So yeah, if you liked D2, this mod will be up your street, and its worth getting the FG expansion anyway. This has to be one of the best and most polish mods I have ever played. My hats off to the devs and Ram for doing an awesome job on this mod.
Tom, your comment about it being better than D2:LoD is GOLD. That’s why I simply couldn’t play the alpha. I just couldn’t. I wanted my features, my passives, etc, LOL. I love the cube recipes all being there. I dreamed of such things in D2.
Some don’t like this mod if they aren’t sold on the base Grim Dawn mechanics. I sure am, it’s a rather solid base. It took me years to warm up to Grim Dawn despite liking Titan Quest in the past. Grim Dawn is a much better game than TQ but takes time to understand mechanics and isn’t totally straight forward, at least not for me.
Grim Dawn is definitely the heavier game compared to Diablo 2 or TitanQuest, which I loved for a long time. It’s true that Grim Dawn is not one of those games you fall head over heels in love with, as I did with Sacred, for example, which I played for many hours a day for years as No. 3 of H.O.P.E. (Heroes of past Empires), the largest German Sacred clan with over a hundred members.
But with the add-ons, the main game has once again gained in quality, so that I have also started Grim Dawn anew, in addition to RoT.
Ciao
Tom
P.S.: … I was lucky to be able to take early retirement as an underground surveyor at the age of 50 at the beginning of 2004, so Sacred came just in time for me …
I looked at some videos of D2:R, granted that the models OK in a way, I feel if you like to play classic D2, then D2:R will be for you. But I see nothing that will justify the price tag, sure the music is awesome, graphics are ok. But its still looks like the same maps, same gameplay. So problems with mercs and pets will be the same. And Duriel for me, is one of the worst fights in the game, after the ancients. I could never do either without dying a lot. And yes, you don’t get a lot of space in that fight, (Duriel) At least the fight in RoT is a lot better. So for me, there is no question which is better.
Which is exactly why if I want to play a new class combo, I create a copy of a char who has completed all the content and use GDStash to change the classes and give the optimal gear.
Because they’ve never been removed. Nor will they.
Nope, doesnt rank up. This was a project by a previous dev who is no longer working on RoT and as such, the upgrading system he had in mind will not make it in the game.
… I just played Diablo 2: Resurrected for 2 hours and I’m not thrilled, but rather disappointed! I hate these platform-dependent games - not for nothing did I switch to GOG a good 10 years ago.
My first conclusion: If you play or have played the Grim Dawn mod Reign of Terror, you don’t want to go back to the pimped original! The little boxes alone are so off-putting.
Personally, I’m going back to my Lev. 36 wizard now and I’m looking forward to it …
where to get eldritch essense ? the material used to transmute set pieces? others like brain matter or such can be bought from the shop, but no essence, or must i proceed further in the game? i’m currently at act 2, getting three same set pieces , so i thought might use transmute, but i can’t.
