I bought this game ~2 weeks ago, and have been enjoying it so far. I’ve been progressing with my first character at my own thorough, languid pace, completing the base game about an hour ago. The quest gave me the guaranteed Legendary, and upon seeing it I sighed.
That is a picture of my character, holding the four Legendary items I’ve acquired so far. An eagle-eye person can see where this is going: three of them are the same thing If you knew me at all you’d know this is par for the course, as my poor luck is a running joke among my friends and family. Regardless, it’s a depressing situation to find oneself in when you’re new to the game.
I’m not 100% sure what the goal of this post is, to be honest, other than vocalizing how disheartened I am. In the interest of being constructive, I’ll include a proposal: could there be some kind of temporary thumb on the loot scale while you’re new(er) to the game? Lowering the chance of finding a duplicate Legendary, or outright eliminating the possibility until you’ve found your first 10 or so; something to prevent such a situation from happening to a new player. Early impressions are everything, and I can see someone else in my shoes being seriously turned off from this. I’m already bummed with my inability to find better fire-damage guns, so this is kind piling onto that negativity, you know what I mean?
Granted, we all know I wouldn’t be bothered in the slightest if I had pulled more than one Deviltongue or Exterminus by now. Such fortune must belong to some other version of me in the multiverse :undecided:
Edit: I know it objectively doesn’t matter in the long run given that these Legendaries are not end-game gear, but it’s more about how the experience played out and the feelings generated. Majorly off-putting situations early into one’s playtime is how you lose people before they ever get fully into the game
I get your pain. Low tier legendaries tend to drop a lot. By the time you maxed yout your char, Especially if you level 75-100 in a place like bastion of chaos, your inventory will be riddled with legendaries. Sometimes you will get dupes of thiese lower tier legendaries that have a greater chance to drop and AoM has greatly increased chance to drop compared to vanilla.
I sympathize, something similar happened to me on my first char. The first and second legendary I dropped was Aldanar’s Vanity. When I got the second one I thought “you’ve got to f****** kidding me”. They were utterly useless for my Conjurer, same as the quest reward for killing log.
The only thing I can think of that helps is long play sessions. At some point Crate made the game reroll (only legendary?) items up to ten times if they previously dropped in that session.
Edit: I’m not complaining, RNG is what is and that’s fine. Drop rates in GD are (or have become) generous too.
On my first character, I completed both, normal and elite, played much Crucible and had only three legendaries. I believe they increased the drop chances after that, in AoM, not sure though. My second character was getting decent drops, very rarely items that I could use, and my third character was so poor that the first legendary dropped in ultimate, and it was a MI too.
Really? I usually play very long sessions so that’s definitely a plus. However, knowing that makes this situation hurt even more because two of those boots came during my session today >_< Pulled the second pair in the Obsidian Throne and the third as my end-reward, but this reroll mechanic did not save me
Level 50 legendaries get outworn pretty soon anyway so no big deal
I always seemed to drop/get non mythical/Mythical Will of Bysmiel like 7 times on my first two characters, and I have 0 interest in pet/summon builds in these kind of games
Well at least that is how it is supposed to work. From the patch notes of version 1.0.4.0:
[Game]
Increased maximum number of times the game will attempt to reroll an already learned Blueprint or a Unique item previously dropped in the current session from 5 to 10.
Doesn’t work with quest rewards. Those are their own separate thing (and for legendaries pulled from a rather small pool of the more common legendaries)
Your luck was worse than mine; I think I only got 2 of the same item as a reward after having completed all 3 difficulties. This “feature” did indeed reduce my enjoyment of the story, I will say.
However, your luck does a great job of highlighting GD’s uninspired loot system.
Creed (or whomever was the quest-giver) may have just as well given a pat on the back as a quest reward. Or have reached into his pocket and handed over some pocket-lint.
You mostly have to shrug it off and accept it for what it is…and enjoy the parts of the game that are more interesting.
There is at least one existing thread about this and imho it is definitely not a great reward design by today’s standard. Feel free to add an opinion or suggestion: improve the rewards discussion
Don’t worry, grind for legendaries doesn’t really start before your character hits level 94. Just enjoy the game at your own pace, grind out quests, grind out factions reputation, there is still A LOT of legendaries to be dropped just through questing.
I wish I could return that feeling that I had during my first playthrough, damn, it was incredibly fun. Enjoy it, mate!
…I pulled a fourth pair of those boots today. The system is certainly not inspiring me to be happy about my circumstances.
I can’t find Fire gear for the life of my initial character, but any Vitality, Acid, and/or Cold characters I end up making will be set from 0-70. Doesn’t really help me right now, but it could work out if I push past the frustration I currently feel.
Don’t feel frustrated, you can buy and farm vendors with a reset trick (visit two other vendors and inventory will be reset) and check out what faction gear is available and get reputation for those factions.
You don’t need a single legendary to get trough the game on Ultimate.
I was wondering how the inventory system worked, if it was a function of time or something like that. Good to know; thanks. If the game seems fit to conspire against me, I’ll just have to “cheat” and worked the vendors to my favor.
Once you get a proper farming char going items start raining down like toads on a Moses birthday.
People who complain clearly never played Diablo 2, where in single player game there was no real way of making a guy with top tier items, because nothing ever dropped. Even on Battle.net you had to grind for days to get something from trades.
Oh I totally remember Diablo II’s loot system Just take this thread and push it to the next level, and you have my experience with D2 in a nutshell. I’m not 100% happy with GD’s loot system, but its seems better than the game’s “spiritual ancestor” at the very least lel
You can beat DII hell with yellow items only too xD It is only a matter of i) how long time it takes ii) how good you are iii) how lucky you are with monster spawn variations
My impression is that beginners tend to “study” the build threads and sees “oh shit legendaries on all gear slots that is how you beat the game”
What do you mean nothing ever dropped? I have top tier items on all my +15 single player chars, and there is not a single item that I feel is lacking on them. Took me about 2 years to get to that point though.
