Pure Summoner Necromancer

I know we have discussions about new summoner builds in various threads but I think this thread would be useful for newcomers because this type of build and class very popular in ARPGs. So post your new theorycrafted summoner builds, ask questions about pet items, devotions etc.

My question is:
What is the other options for second mastery except Occultist?

Necro + Occultist seems broken AF, with stupid flat dmg and offensive abilitiy for pets.

For a more defensive char i think Necro + Arcanist would be nice (mirror, maiven, IEE and crowd control with OFF). When you are targeted by a boss as a summoner, mirror is a must.

Shaman + Necro would be okay for an hybrid caster build with nice vitality debuff (devouring swarm), and the powerful Necro attack spell (bone harvest) that also increase pets damagen there is also the reap spirit skill that seems to be awesome

Shaman, IMO, is even better than Occultist for a pet Necro.
Briarthorne, Conjure primal spirit, Heart of the wild, Devouring swarm for the vitality damage debuff.
Remembering that skeletons main damage will be vitality (maybe if some item introduces something new but I dunno)

Shaman, maybe arcanist bunt mainly shaman

anyone with a hybrid cabalist build for hc?

maybe here an example:

Depends Occ gets more flat damage and OA plus the pet toggle as well.

Maybe if the Briathorn roar was an aura instead.

Occultist, Demo, Shaman, Arcanist in that order. Though IEE line might be strong with a ton of necro pets?

Occultist is miles ahead of Shaman for a secondary class here. WAY more flat damage, more oa, more attack speed, better rr overall

think necro /occ will be the top choice , just got to work out a build lol

I’m sorry to ask, but what flat damage is there for the occultist to pets? besides the acid from Blood of dreeg?
Noob question

The Hellfire aura or Storm Spirit.

Occultist has far more “raw” damage that it can give to pets but Shaman has more Vitality damage and Vitality resist reduction.

Looks to me like Shaman is overall more focused on directly boosting the main damage Necromancer’s Skeletons and Wraith deal whereas Occultist adds more secondary damage.

  1. Wraith deals cold + vitality damage and the same thing goes for the spirits you summon from the Bonescavenger gloves. Cof/Vulnerability debuffs elemental + physical + acid/poison. More damage channels >>> -60% debuff to vitality.

  2. Nobody obliges you to take 12/12 in Will of the Crypt. In fact, you can concentrate on physical damage - i.e. a damage type you can reliably debuff using CoF. Physical damage > Vitality damage, since mobs have only 7% physical resistance on Ultimate… so more power to the Occultist.

  3. Skeleton mages deal primarily fire damage. Again, more power to the Occultist since you can buff them directly through Hellfire.

The point I am trying to make is that:
a) more legendary pet-focused items favour Cabalist (e.g. Plaguebearer of Dreeg, Will of Bysmiel, Bonescavanger’s Gloves);
b) you can resummon the skeletons until you get the squad composition you want.
c) you are not forced to max Will of the Crypt.

Well, all this theorycraft will probably go down when we see grimtools update with the new items and stuff

I’m sticking with Shaman until there

Does anyone know if pets got threat generating buff in the expansion? One thing that annoyed me in the vanilla game was when your character wasn’t even attacking but merely casting debuffs like Curse of Frailty, it would bring the attention of all the monsters on him.

I hope “Generate more threat” ability I see in skill description of some pets actually does allows pets to get more attention from monsters. After all, the focus of pet builds should be somewhat more passive/relaxed gameplay.

Here’s a possible Necro / Inquisitor build.

I don’t think this combination has as much synergy as occultist / demolitionist. But, it has good survival tools and reasonable pet buffs / enemy debuffs.

If inquisitor seal can be cast in a location of the player’s choosing, then it could be used to support pets and that would make the inquisitor mastery an interesting choice for a variety of pet builds.

Fair points on all of those.

Is pure Necromancer viable? Question directed at Praetorians since you guys are the ones who have knowledge about item support and stuff

Storm Spirit and Hellfire.

Do you know if the pet number which can really attack at the same time will be increased ? It’s not a problem in vanilla but in mod as soon as you get more than 6 or 7 pets they don’t follow you or attack. And necro will potentialy get more pets.
