Question: pets builds with a single summon-type

A question for pet experts in the community.

One reason why I have rarely played pets is that it seems that the best approach is to have as many pets as possible. As in, you can focus on one, but still put a point in a bunch of others that, with +skills, will be a worthwhile part of your (massive) army. This doesn’t appeal to me, just on aesthetic grounds, as the various pets look like they don’t belong together.

So my question is, what are the options for building around just a single summoning skill. Ie, picking just one of ravens, briarthorn, skellies, etc, and creating a build around that? Is this a hopelessly gimped approach? And are some pets better than others for this kind of build?

Just to be clear, I’m talking about pet-scaled pets here.

Just to clarify, a single type of pet or just one pet in total?

Like for example, are we talking skeletons only or like just a single skeleton?

Either way, let me know which pet you are interested in and if you are looking for a budget or endgame setup and I may be able to make something to fit the criteria.

If going for only one pet (like a single skeleton instead of multiple skeletons), your best option is Hellhound.

If going for a single type of pet, every single one of them can work and are perfectly viable.

Single type. Quite happy to have either one or a bunch of them.

It can be an endgame setup in terms of how expensive it is.

The attributes investment can be tweaked according to personal preference, but since the build is kind of low on energy regen, I am putting a bit into spirit. Arcane Spark on Medal is another option if you need more energy regen.

Hellhounds are the only pets and it is a cold pet setup. Should be able to clear more or less every single content in the game.

Hey Maya, just wondering if you’ve played around with the all caster/all archer skellie items added in FoA? I’ve been interested in trying one of them but no idea how they perform vs other skellie builds

I haven’t touched skeletons at all outside of testing how my Skulls & Bones - Pet Ritualist fared against callagadra and getting disheartened.

But I assume having them all ranged will help with their survivability, though… Ravens are ranged and so are the Blightshard amulet pets and that doesnt really help when going up against AoE heavy bosses.

Perhaps Lost Souls + the Cold Skeleton offhand could work, since Lost Souls does not have any innate damage conversion .

That could be an idea, I was mostly gonna use them as a chill way of farming dread/tempest totems with a few altar buffs while I watch stuff on the side. So Calla is no problem :v:

but are you then actually planning to just walk around summoning 1 pet from level 1 to 100?

are some of these combos not thematically enough?

raven + storm hound from relic
skeletons + skeletal garguantua from relic
blight fiend + blight scourges from amulet

Nice! That’s exactly what I had in mind. There’s a focused simplicity to it. Thank you!

Awesome thanks! An army of crossbow bois sounds like fun and hopefully I can get some of those 8% hp ascended bonuses to beef em up a little

Good question. I always prefer to level with close to the endgame build (obv conversions are not always possible). Will see how it goes. I will figure something out.

What I wanted to check was whether I was chasing a fundamentally useless idea.

You can kind of do it. Hellhound may not be the best pet for this, but it certainly has plenty of item support -

Chosen Visage
Rhowari Shoulderguard
Salazar’s Sovereign Blade / Korvaak’s Burning-Blade
Fleshwarped Archive
Zaria’s Pendant
Halion’s Crest

Essentially focus on pet stats and +X skills to Hound. Prioritize the Occultist skills first and then venture out to Berserker, unless you are going to go for Werewolf.

Posting this here as an alternative to the Pet Mystic - Conjurer, Level 100 (GD 1.3.0.8) - Grim Dawn Build Calculator

I am not sure which is more DPS, but Conjurer definitely felt better to play .

One too many points in Ember Claw.

That was my first thought. But it’s 1+22.

The best pet builds revolve around sets that give bonuses to multiple pets (Beastcaller’s for Briarthorn + Hellhound, Ghol’s for Briarthorn + Blight Fiend, and Lost Souls for Hellhound + Skeletons), so it’s only natural that the best builds will take full advantage of these sets.

Hellhound is the best pet for a solo-focus build; Dracarris Pyromancers focus a lot on Hellhounds + a ton of skill modifiers to Flame Touched. Having Infernal Breath hit twice really helps it serve as a skill that you can build around and not worry about having to invest anything into other pets.

Blight Fiends with the transmuter work fine as well

Skeletons you can build around on their own as well, but as others have said, they fall apart rather quickly if you’re going into high SR / super-boss territory.

Can kind of fix it if using different shoulders or boots though .

You likely need two. The second could be world gate or something from a relic even.
You will have a main pet type and generally something to boost them from the second like attack speed, elemental resistance, or conversion.

Very little has changed in the expansion. A couple more options, but nothing on top was replaced.
