Ranking skill transmuters

Skill transmuters, you know these things image in the skill trees are a defining aspect in Grim Dawn. Some of them outright enable some builds while others barely even see play.

Surrounding the release of FoA, the discussions about the need to refresh buffs, the usefulness of some skills (cough Inquisitor seal cough) and the release of builds ignoring transmuters that should be made for them, I wanted to share my thoughts on some of these transmuters. And what better way to do it in 2026 than with a tier list.

Thought process and justifications for each tier:

Build defining

Transmuters that fundamentally change how one thinks about a particular skill, mostly through cooldown and total damage modifications. Special mention to Guardians of Empyrion since we all know rr is still king.

Impactful

Transmuters that aren’t available to every build but that you almost always want to take if you meet the requirements. I included Bloody Pox here because it’s an odd case: the damage buff is mostly useful for leveling as the damage falls off in the end game, but the speed buff can be really useful to retal builds.

Niche but useful

Terrify is often overshadowed by a better source of rr, but it’s there if you need it. Markovian’s Defense can enable full uptime on Overguard on some builds that can mitigate the damage loss. I included Consecrated Blade here because although the conversion is rarely useful for the player, the pet bonuses are actually useful for chaos pet builds. Aegis placement is explained by the fact that it is only really useful to a single build, a rare case of a case where conversion should be removed.

Mostly just conversion

Title speaks for itself: Grim Dawn’s signature conversion system being represented in the masteries. Some of these include additional effects that are either not that impactful (freeze on RoS) or total damage that is just there to make up for the sub par builds (elemental Cadence).

Conversion but somehow worse

Skills that couldn’t make it to the tier above for the following reasons:

  • Concussive Bomb: costs 3, only to convert the internal trauma on the second node and stun enemies that should die in 1 hit anyway. Please.
  • Allagast’s Arcane Net: barely noticeable tdm, doesn’t convert the electrocute nor the lightning tether. Pass.
  • Sear Souls: Bonus duration on a (not particularly good) skill that already has full uptime, get hit with a tdm penalty for a damage type that can’t even use the DoT part on the second node anyway.
  • Volcanic Might: Most fire Vire’s Might items already convert the physical part of the skill. But 1 skill point for 0.4 seconds knockdown is a bargain right?
I'd rather spend my point elsewhere

The tier made for the 3 heal+buff skills. The cooldown reduction generally isn’t useful for these types of skills, especially now that you can reduce the cooldown of potions. The heal/regen bonuses to breath of Belgothian and Word of Arms are underwhelming at best. Also, why spend a point to enable dual wielding when I can just 1 point Dual Blades/Implements of War anyway?
Included Seal in here too because Seal.

IEE

Ever seen someone pick this unironically?

If these were to be rebalanced, I’d like to see the 9 bottom skill transmuters bumped to “mostly just conversion” tier at worst. The 4 skills in “conversion but somehow worse” could use a buff (or a cost reduction for Canister). The 4 in “I’d rather spend my point elsewhere” kinda have an identity crisis now and IEE is just IEE.

Thoughts?

I already wrote somewhere that transmuters on healing skills could be remade. They would make the skill perma and you would lose healing. There would be an option that does not exist now. One could still use it as is it now or reduce piano with the transmuter and lose healing. Two healing skills combos would be far better to play this way. And everyone would have options…

Yes, elemental Cadence Battlemage to convert WPS

It is strange that you like transmuter on Solael Witchfire. IEE does the same and that one you do not like

This tierlist is insane.

Why is Consecrated Blade so many tiers higher than Manifestation? It’s literally worse.

How is Concussive Bomb not at the bottom of the list?

Why aren’t the two FS transmuters separate?

How is Scion of Dreeg build defining but everything in “Mostly Just Conversion” isn’t?

Why is Sear Souls so low?

This tierlist is insane.

Thanks. Controversial picks to drive engagement  Internet 101. Also worth noting that I didn’t name the tiers S-A-B-C-… so their placement compared to one another is worth taking with a grain of salt.

I explained my reasoning for most of these in the post itself but let’s recap.

Why is Consecrated Blade so many tiers higher than Manifestation? It’s literally worse.

Chaos pets > Any arcanist pet build

How is Concussive Bomb not at the bottom of the list?

Because bottom tier is IEE.

Why aren’t the two FS transmuters separate?

More damage vs more damage depending on weapon setup. Considering how I named things, they would just be in the same tier anyway.

How is Scion of Dreeg build defining but everything in “Mostly Just Conversion” isn’t?

There are no items that convert rr types but 10 billion items that convert damage on skills. Scion of Dreeg is unique in that sense. Feel free to suggest a different name for the top category but I think the distinction between those 2 categories is quite clear.

Why is Sear Souls so low?

Cause it’s just conversion, but with a damage penalty and bonus duration on a skill with full uptime.

I appreciate your opinion but wow, you missed the mark on a lot of these . I want to call out this section:

The single point that you spend on these transmuters are objectively good if you meet the weapon requirements. For a single point you can get:

  • 37.5% CDR on Pneumatic burst + dual wielding and health regen bonus
  • 30% CDR on Word of Renewal + bonus health restored and energy regen
  • 80% CDR on Inquisitor Seal + less energy cost (seal still sucks but the transmuter is good)
  • 30% CDR on Rallying Cry + dual wielding

…Or you can spend your single point trying to hardcap a random passive for 10% more element damage. The choice is obvious.

PS. I personally provided feedback for these transmuters years ago and got them buffed. They were in fact much worse, but now they’re fine.

I didn’t want to get dunked on by chaos pet enjoyers but I see I’m getting dunked on by everyone else lol.

I agree to some extent BUT there are dual wield enablers somewhere else in NB/Zerker trees so you rarely pick Frenzied Cry/breath of Belgothian for that reason.

Regarding the cdr, I don’t think it’s particularly useful as you almost always push the button to refresh the buff and the skills have short cooldown to begin with.

The heal increases aren’t the worst and can be decent value for 1 point but their impact is pretty mild.

Now this I can agree with. The transmuters are not game changers, but my point is that they are very useful for all builds that meet the weapon requirements. And that means a TON of builds

The transmuters for the other attack skills depend on what you’re going for. Spam DEE plays different than cooldown DEE so this is up to the player to choose. But the healing skill transmuters? They are basically always good with no downsides.

Maybe this should’ve been the tier list all along.

I disagree with some of the rankings but it’s a personal tier list. I have to say, PB’s transmuter is goated. It feels incredibly impactful on Nightblades. Especially lately with all the Nightblade related power creep. Like you can get over 20k hp and then Healing Effects are common commodity nowadays and bam it’s a super powerful burst heal that you can use every 5 seconds. Rocking Belgo Carnage relic? That cooldown is one second less. I would definitely rank it impactful.
Word of Renewal is much less so because it’s usually underleveled (PB has absolutely incredible value for every NB so it’s always at soft cap and is often overcap so heal % amount is always high) and 2H Inquisitors don’t exactly have points on 13/12 WoR since they need to spend it on million more important things. War Cry transmutor is hot trash tho.

The healing skills themselves can have a lower cooldown and the trasmuter making them perma would just be such a huge QoL. We would have the best of both worlds.

The only one I really disagree with is Inquisitor seal.

The fact that inquisitor seal is borderline useless in the current meta is probably the driving factor in your placement, but the transmuter itself is actually amazing now. In fact… that transmuter is the only reason I would spec into seal at all. Being able to reposition it every second is the only thing saving it IMO.

To me it’s “niche but useful”

I would also move bloody pox to “build defining”, since it can make some build entirely depend on BP for damage.
