While it would be a nice feature, there is one feature you might be missing. At the top right corner of the minimap is an expansion arrow to select various icon filters you can toggle. So if you have explored areas and want to know where certain resources are, you can toggle them on and off. I find that with some resources like coal, it is easiest to toggle them on and off frequently to be able to notice the blinking patterns in the otherwise dark map. The only problem with this list is that wolf dens are always lit. You can’t toggle them off.

That is a nice feature, and I use it to track all the icons and locations.
I have no problem toggling Wolf Dens on and off.
Try verifying your local files through Steam, something might not be working properly. 
Oh, my bad. Not wolf dens. Boar dens.
